Oh, and check out the Hook and the Cook YouTube channel - Scott did showed a land based excursion with Gary Brown....had a bit of a comp comparing bait versus lures.....good video and not far from where you’re fishing.

Hey Fishkent, Don’t feel bad! I can identify with your problem. I’m a bit hit and miss also ......I’m in a kayak though. Can only suggest trying moving to earlier or later time slots ....ie. near sunrise or nearer to dusk. And be mindful that Bate Bay is still subject to commercial fishing ( for bait fish primarily I think) and I wonder if it impacts on the general supply? I could be wrong but I often hear of locals saying the Hacking is hard work relative to Botany Bay for example. Good advice also from Little_Flattie. Carol (aka jecaseka)

So great this post/thread is still available as I’ve got to learn so much in this area. It’s my retirement hobby! Because I can...... 😜 and, as I’ve posted before, I am concentrating on luderick this winter using my new small (secondhand) Alvey 455B centrepin reel in order to improve. Am also a member of a small local fishing club where there are some senior members who are very generous with their advice...... but, of course, we can’t meet currently because of covid19. BTW - is Durras Lake any good for luderick? I discovered a cool new wooden fishing platform that looks recently built by DPI .....apparently using our fishing licence $. Looks a good location to me..... it’s on south side just inland a bit from the entrance. I also noticed quite a bit of long stringy green weed in a few places Nearby , although I do have some cabbage and stringy weed with me recently harvested from Greenwell Point. The lake also looks good for kayaking but didn’t bring my kayak with me this trip. Am currently staying at Bawley Point. Suggestions? Hints?

I am grateful to Koalaboi and JamoDamo giving me some advice around March 25 re the Alvey Blackfish 455B reel I'd purchased and general set-up. I usually fish out of a kayak but when it starts getting a bit cold prefer to revert to shore-based fishing. This year I thought I would improve my black-fishing technique......and started off on a great footing with pretty good catch on May 8 from a well known jetty in SansSouci. Locals will see where it is from the photo - a popular spot close to the Taren Point bridge. Mind you, I got lucky I think as it was literally the last cast, and no-one on the jetty was getting any excitement - I called out "one more cast" to my husband who was sitting up in the shade and starting to look a bit impatient. It was a bit of a tussle getting it in - he wanted to wrap me around the pylons....and young Pat came to my aid with the net. First fish with my alley reel so pretty impressed and its a PB for me at 40cms!

Interesting- have just purchased one of these ( alvey direct wind blackfish reel model No. 455B) at my fishing club’s auction. Unused. Have yet to even put line on it.....might need to do more research though 😜 any recommendations on YouTube maybe?.... I’m bit of a rookie

Good on you releasing her - my 'shore crew' (and cook) would complain if I didn't bring anything home for dinner so the pressure is always on - and my catch rate isn't always as good as some of you guys as I am in a kayak and can't cover as much ground as the boaties.

Bit envious. Not having much luck with whiting out of my kayak. Still learning.....I seem to be better with flatties and bream.
