  1. Evening raiders

After last Sundays mild 40c I smelt fuel in the shed. Went looking tonight and I found fuel in the bilge of the Quintrex. Now my immediate thought is the tank itself is leaking, but starting to think most likely the fuel hose from the tank to the filter? I haven't been under there for years and was always going to replace the fuel line next time!

My question is ? Am I in a happy and do the alloy tanks leak after 10 years or is it most likley a 10 yo rubber fuel line? Presuming the fuel line takes off from the bottom of the tank?

    Jim,

I would lift your floor and check the tank thoroughly, I was recently out in my coastrunner(2005) and after smelling fuel, I liftied up a hatch and found raw fuel in the bilge. Immediately diluted it with sea water and headed back in. Found a hole in bottom of fuel tank and fuel constantly running out.

Your fuel line will be at the top of the tank and going into a fitting with a solid pickup line into the tank. Both breathers will be at the top as well.

On removal found 2 other spots on the tank undersurface that were starting to pit/corrode. Had it welded up as the rest of the tank was I good nic.

  3. Hi, +1 to what Gus said and we stock and sell both brands and on the Lowrance side of the fence the HDS-5 is the most common we sell due to being a combo and also allows you to add structure scan at a later date. Some good price on the HB units are happening at present but the 798 with both SI and DI is a bit above your budget, but if you can stetch it, that unit is a very good combo with a great screen and once you have used Down Imagining and Side Imagining you will never go back to 2D.

PM me if you would like the Raider prices on both the Lowrance and Humminbird units,

    Cheers,

    Huey.

Hds5 is a combo sounder and plotter

    Hds5x is just a sounder

    Hds5m is just a plotter

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Gus

    Thanks Gus

  5. Looking at purchasing a sounder maybe a sounder plotter combo to replace an old lowrance 47x,

    Budget about 1k.

Anyone know what's the diff between the 3 hds5 models?

The other options are the hummingbirds 788/798 units.

    Anyone recommend any others?

  6. Noah,

If it's like my mates yamie there a plastic arm connected to the electric sensor thingy, that moves with the leg that gets stuck, probaly just needs a bit of inox or similar.

  7. Mr 475,

Can you check your rego papers and see what its states(lenght), mine is 4.89mtrs as per the rego papers and catalogue states bow to transom is the same at 4.89mtrs(can't see quintrex quoting wrong figures and there may be slight changes between mine(2005)and your model)

I release it doesn't include the bow roller and measurement starts where hull meets the top deck at the pointy end.

I will re-check with the tape (boat doesn't live at home)to be sure though.

Again another reason to keep rego papers handy as this shows there can be slight variations between 475 models of boats.

  8. Fishmaniac,

Good point, i checked my rego papers and its down as 4.89m same as the lenght bow-transom stats as per a page i kept from the catalogue of my boat. Although lenght overall is 5.04 on the catalogue as well.

My concern was the link to boat measurements guide had the lenght short of the pod on the examples but i'm guessing its for a bolt on pod or such like.

I figure to as the boat has 475 on the side i will get hassled by some officers who think they know all, so i'm guessing i'm keeping a copy of my rego papers on board for the last word.

  9. Now this is confusing if you look at where their site direct you for boat sizing, i have a 2005 quinnie 475 coast runner total lenght 5.04mtrs from nose(no not from the roller but where the hull meets the small bow spirit)to the back where the motor sits. As my pod is not removeable and is part of the hull is it included?

Now if i take a measurement to the back of the boat before the pod its under the 4.8mtrs

I consider my boat to be over the 4.8 mtrs as thats its total hull lenght is 5.04mtrs

What are your thoughts, as i gather there will be several people is this predicament you maybe can have the waterways respond on this!!!

    Quoting there definiton

How do I determine the length of my vessel?

The length of the vessel means its length of its hull. This includes all structural and integral parts of the craft, such as wooden, plastic or metal stem or sterns, bulwarks and hull/deck joints.

Hull length excludes removable parts that can be detached in a non-destructive manner and without affecting the structural integrity of the craft, eg outboard motors, swimming platforms, bowsprits, fittings or attachments. This measure is consistent with the International Standard, Small Craft – Principal Data Standard.

  11. Hi Gaz,

The plate is made with 5mm thick aluminium. The plate is extremely strong and didn't require any kind of support for the winch. Yes, the winch is the only thing attached to the plate, it is bolted on. Then the plate is bolted onto the deck. I can PM you details on where I had the plate custom made if you are interested.

    Hi Byron,

The plate was custom made from scratch by the fabricator in Western Sydney using 5mm thick aluminium. As my deck has a curve, the plate was curved to match the deck and bolted on. I am not sure what other specs you need, as the plate will need to be custom made depending on the design of the boat, particularly the deck shape and anchor well size. If Gary was to make a plate for someone, I would be happy to provide photos of the plate if required.

    Glenn,

That would be great if you could pm the details as i live western sydney.

  12. Hi Gaz,

I had the anchor well cover plate custom made by a metal fabricator.

    Thanks chopper

Looks great, is the winch attached only to the plate? hows it go for strenght?

Whats the thickness of the plate guessing it's alloy.

  13. Hi Billy,

My boat is a 4.50M runabout and has a anchor winch. Pictures are below. Cost me $499.95. Model is a 710F, which is the freefall mode. When anchoring, you can lower the anchor bit by bit, or free fall. I have sent you a PM with the details of the company and where to get them from if you are interested.

Looking at putting one on a quinnie 475 coast runner, did the cover plate over the anchor well come with the winch? i'm guessing you have had it custom made to suit.

  14. A mate has just put hydraulic steering on, it takes 3(360deg) full turns to go from midships to fully right or left therefore 6 full turns to go from far left to right. i think its too much wheel rotation or is this about normal?

  15. thanks guys,

mount already has 2 x grub screws to fix into the rail which will need to be replaced with longer ones, idealy need a bush/adapter/tube with ID of a inch - OD of a 1 1/4 and about 70mm long that i can cut into 2 halves.

Wondering if our resident plumbers/mechanics/irrigation guys know of such a part that i could use off the shelf before having a nylon one turned up or the rail bush and welded out to 1 1/4.

    boats a quinnie 475 coastrunner

  16. Has anyone had to buy a spacer to mount them b4.

Bought some in canada and they only had 7/8 or 1 1/4 which i bought. I have a 1 inch rail, tried some rubber but not really any good, wondering if there is a off the shelf item i can buy before having a nylon bush made. Looked at pvc pipe but wall thickness is not thick enough, needs to be about 3mm thick

    any ideas?

  17. I've had a 100lt for a few yrs now, and use it for camping which is normally for 7 days. Found the biggest tub that will fit in my esky and deep freeze and freeze it for a couple of weeks before we go and it normally lasts the 7 days.

The ice packs are ok for day trips(in small eskies) but i dont tend to use them for extended periods as they thaw out and then just take up space.

I think from memory for the esky to work at its best its must have a quarter of it volume in ice.
