  1. Awesome thanks heaps!

I can always go buy some 6lb fluoro I do use it just am out at the moment. I think I'll bring up one rod and the others guys can bring up their own and I'll just use the opposite of what they use, in terms of bait or lure. They all have similar setups to mine.

If I catch anything I'll be sure to take some pictures and post them up here, especially if they're of a good size.

I think once the season opens back up I'm going to have to find some streams closer to Sydney to hit. I've been watching heaps of youtube videos and it is safe to say I'm already hooked and I haven't even tried it yet

  2. Thanks so much for the info guys. I think I'll definitely take a light bream rod down with some power bait and hard bodies and check out the tackle shop for some live worms. Will a 2-4kg rod with 6lb braid and 8lb fluoro leader do the job?

I am well aware about the no fishing in rivers and streams at the moment and am pretty upset about it because fishing in those types of waters is what appeals to me most about freshwater fishing. But I completely understand that these laws are in place for the good of the fish and will respect those 100%. One thing I couldn't find info on though was whether or not I am allowed to keep fish caught in lakes and dams during the closed season? Being on holidays I doubt I would anyways but in case someone feels up to cleaning and cooking or even taking some home I might if it is legal.

  3. Thanks everyone.

Went out last thursday with a pair of full length leg skins and a thermal top. It was a reasonably warm day around 20C but I think as long as I stay paddling I'd be comfortable down to about 15-16C in that outfit. On the fishing side of things I only caught a baby snapper.

  4. Hi everyone,

I'm heading down to Jindabyne this weekend for a snow trip and when I was there a few weeks ago I was really keen to fish but didn't have any gear with me.

I'm thinking of bringing down a couple rods and hb's. This will be my first time trout fishing and freshwater fishing and I have never fly fished nor do I own any gear for it. Would there be much of a chance of me catching anything off of a light spinning outfit on my first time or should I not bother trying and wait to go with someone more experienced.

Also if anyone thinks its worth a shot any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance, Jason.

  5. Thanks mate it's good to hear that not much has slowed with the colder weather.

I'm just looking for something that doesn't hold absorb much water and is reasonably light but can provide a bit of warmth. I might try some thermals that I take snowboarding and light jacket like one you suggested.

    Thanks.

  6. I'll be off of uni until early August and I'm hoping to take my yak out a bit over my break.

I was just wandering if anyone has any tips on clothing that would be good for cold weather yaking. I usually wear a pair of skins and a tee but I am sure that won't be enough even if I go out on a warmish day.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also has anyone had a chance to go out lately around the inner west?

    Thanks, Jason.

  7. I still have no idea what they could have been but it was really muddy and murky in that part of the Hawkesbury so I couldn't get any sight of what it was at all. Hopefully I'll get the chance to head back there and try catch whatever it was.

    Thanks for the help, Jason

  8. Hi,

I'm heading down to Culburra next weekend for a few days. I've never been there before and wanted to know if anyone knew what I could expect to catch off the beach or in the Crookhaven (landbased) around this time of the year. And if anyone could give me some pointers on parts of the beach to fish or any spots close to Culburra to fish in the Crookhaven. I only get to go beach fishing once or twice a year so I will primarily fish off of the beach however if I can't seem to catch anything I will try Crookhaven as well.

Any advice will be appreciated, Thanks.

    Jason.

  9. As for all year round yes they bite all year round but the run will vary from spot to spot and at times you will do better in the estuary than the ocean at the moment most eastern suburbs and southern ledges are firing and they are just starting to pick up in the western parts of Sydney harbour another month and the run will start in the George's river and the bay! In fact there's a few in the bay at the moment tou will get the big north coast runs in may thru to August sometimes right into October.

Thanks. I'm heading down to Culburra in a few weeks and have heard of people getting them near there so I may have to give it a go while I'm there.

  10. I'm pretty sure they weren't mullet. I see mullet feeding a lot at my local and the action seemed a bit different. Mind you there were a few big mullet jumping around near there so it very well could have been.

I think I'll just have to bring some poppers, a float, some bread and a couple other lures with me next time for a better chance at catching one and actually find out what they are.

    Thanks for your help.

  11. Hi everyone,

I was fishing some mudflats at the Hawkesbury today near some oyster leases and there were quite a few fish smashing the surface in under 3 feet of water.

I couldn't actually seem to get a good look at any of the fish that were doing it and I didn't have my sunnies on me. Would anyone happen to know what fish could have been doing this? I'm guessing whiting or bream? I tried chucking out a few different surface lures to no avail.

    Cheers, Jason

  12. Nice report mate good to see someone else braved the weather and got abit of luck.

I was there on Saturday as well. Didn't go all the way around to Juno because we thought it wouldn't be too protected there. We stayed in between the railway bridge and the oyster racks just north of Milson Island. Caught a bunch of <35cm Jewies all over the place and caught a 40cm flathead under the road bridges as well as 2 more 40cm flatties and one just over 50cm at the oyster leases as well as various other small fish. Put out a livie and got hit and almost immediately got busted off.

    Well done.

    Jason

  13. I purchased my yak via an online deal, from a reputable kayak retailer. It's almost an exact knock off of the Mantra Noa, which received a good review. It cost under $400, with accessories such as deluxe seat, 2 x 28cm hatches, good quality 2 piece paddle, 1KG non collapsable anchor and chain, 4 moulded rod holders and a swivel rod holder.

At 82cm across the beam and 2.7M in length, it's very stable at rest and pushes through the water reasonably well. Being short, it does have tracking issues, especially if the wind is up. In still water, it's an absolute delight.

    Hi GreyNurse,

I am pretty sure I have found a yak similar to the one you are describing online and I really like it. I have also found one that I like and is very similar and is 3m in length so about 30cm longer than yours. Do you think it would make a difference getting the longer one, at no extra cost? Or would that size still have similar issues in windy conditions?

    Thanks,

    Jason.
