  1. Hi Guys,

I am heading on during the week since I finally got some time off work. Wanted to take the familia up to Avoca and was wondering what you can catch there?

Also, I want to squid there for live bait so I am wondering if there is anywhere I can squid from at Avoca? Should I be fishing from the north side of Avoca or South Side? From the rocks or just the beach?

I will take a bag of pillies and freshly caught squid from the night before, but preferably I would like live bait as I want to try slide fishing out this way.

Any advice and help is appreciated :D

  2. Went here two weeks ago just as an update for people. Great potential spot if the wind wasn't there. Quiet and has some light there at night too. Was only there for about 30mins and decided to pack it up since the wind was going crazy. Want to try this place again though on a better night

  3. Mate gotta say egk24a I love woolies prawns that all I use !!! And nice jew good catch

The woollies prawns are awesome especially when they are fresh. Not like that frozen tweed baits stuff which crumble up as soon as you peel them. Always catch something when I use woolies prawns hehe

  4. Congrats mate! That's a solid fish!

I was out there with a few friends last Saturday also from about 8 - 11. It was freezing cold though ... Like you said water was warm, we managed to bag 3 bream 28cm, 29cm and 33cm which was a solid enough effort for me. All caught on Fresh Banana Prawns from Woolworths.

  5. On. A thread like this a few years ago, I followed the consensus and got a pink 1.8 yamashita. Then I asked at the LTS and was recommended a silver/grey 2.0 yamashita. I have since added a couple more but have now boxed myself into 1.8 -2.0 yamashitas. All others seem to be a last resort or do not get used.

What jigs are others using and how do you select which one to start with?

    Cheers

    Steve

    Hey Steve,

I am not expert in Squid Fishing but have caught a fair few in my time. I use mainly Yamashita's, Yo-Zuri and Berkley Powerbaits since they come scented.

I always start with either a pink or an orange since this is what I have had most success with throughout the years. If there is no action on them for about 30 minutes I will alternate to different colors such as browns, whites, silvers, blues and greens. My squid jig collection isn't huge but the majority of them would be pink / orange.

As for the success rate of these jigs, it's about the same throughout the range. really depends on how you work the jig.

There is also no doubt that you can catch squid with the cheapo jigs as well but I have never had any luck. I am going to add some Gancraft Jigs into my collection soon as there is a local tackle shop to me that sells them for $20.

Anyway, good luck with the squid mate.

  6. Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to know if anyone has done any fishing off Northbridge Sailing Club?

I am not sure if you're even allowed to fish there ...

I tried to call them but there was no answer as they only operate Sunday according to their message.

Also tried to call the Council but they had no idea.

Any advice would be heaps good.

    Cheers,

  7. Hi Raiders,

This is my first fishing report so it may not be the greatest ...

Went to two locations last night without any success.

Got to location one at Balmain Ferry Wharf at about 10pm. Setup up two rods. One for squid and a larger rod with some frozen squid caught on the last trip.

Squidding didn't do very well there as it produced nothing.

As for the rod with the defrosted squid, it has a few big bites and then nothing. Reeled it back in to find that half the squid had been taken! Unfortunately they left the rest of the squid and wouldnt touch it.

Stayed here for about 2 hours without any luck for live squid so moved.

Arrived at P2 which wasn't any different. Caught up with a few more mates and my brother.

So now there were 5 of us in total and managed only 1 squid.

Overall it was very quiet night without much result.

Although it had been about 8 weeks since I could get out so I was just happy to wet a line!

  8. Hey All,

Just wanted to know if anyone has been to Camp Cove in Watsons Bay lately? Looking at going tonight or tomorrow for some fishing.. Just wondering what's out there and how good it is.

Would like to catch squid too and was wondering if anyone had any advice or tips. Anything is appreciated.

Is it even worth my time heading out there? ...

Looking at going to either of the spots in the photos attached. Where would be better, what bait to use and what sort of fish are there?

    Thanks again Raiders!

  9. Hey champ.

Squid fishing at malabar is quite good but only on some days. I found that walking out further towards the head is a better place to fish. Try to find a flat rock platform which has a small crack in between it. Much more squid than near the boat ramp. And bigger ones aswell!

    Good luck mate!!

    Hey drew87,

there are so many ledges there lol. finding the flat one with a crack doesnt look like any easy task haha

I am thinking you're talking about the one as per the attached.. let me know if i am no where near it lol

  10. Hi guys and girls,

Just wanted to know if anyone has tried their luck around the malabar area lately? I have been really into squid fishing lately and am looking for some new locations where I can catch squid.

According to Google Maps it looks like it's a half decent place to try and catch Squid / Fish.

Is there any safety issues that need to be known prior to going to this area? If there is please let me know. I plan on going on the 3rd of April with a small group of 3 or 4.

What fish can you catch here?

Anyway, on a more interesting topic for me, is it possible to catch squid here and if it is possible are the numbers high?

    Thanks in advanced!

    Mike

  11. Great Catch , in Ore as the Squid still is eluding me. if you don't mind me asking where about in the Harbour the were ?

    Cheers Oziodin :fishing1:

They were caught very close to the harbour bridge. Less than 200m away on the west side. Hope this helps without giving exact locations away.

Not sure if this will help you but we were using the below.

    * Yamashita OH Q Live - Size 1.8 and 2.5

    * Berkley Powerbait - Size 2.0

Was also using a various amount of colors. Orange, Pink, Browns, Purples. Didn't seem like the we're picky on color this time round. Definitely we're biting hard on the berkleys since they are scented.

    Good Luck !

  12. Hit the Harbour last night with my brother, nephew and a friend for some squidding action.

Got there around 12:00am and rigged up some yamashita squid jigs. Cast out and within seconds the squid were on. It was on fire last night. Ended up staying there until 4:30am and landed about 30 squid between all four of us.

Was a good session overall. We had no intention on using this squid as bait for kings/Jews, but I bet if we did we wouldn't have caught any T_T

  13. Ah okay, I tried it as well but they weren't the same kept busting me off and striping the line. Rather spend the money and not worry but let meg know if you find the recipe to making them hehe

  14. Just a quick update, used this a few weeks ago and seems like they are doing pretty well for me. Anchor the sinker down on the floor and slide the bait out and just let it do it's things. Used Circle Hooks to hook the bait up. Caught this guy a few weeks back, just haven't had time to load things up until now. I am going to continue using these and will keep everyone posted.

Has anyone else had the chance to use anything like this lately? How did it work for you?

Personally I kind of liked it :)
