  1. the flathead seem to have left the building :tease: , last few outings have seen hardly any results for maximun input, ie im putten the hours in but not producing :mad3: the lake should be crawling with them but they are shut down for some reason, been watching the barrometer and tides and even with the barrometer above 1016 today when we went out still nil, im starting to doubt all that stuff. ow well back to the drawing board. might have to give the flattys a miss for a while and go chase some drummer n groper. chow.

    G'day Diver.

Just went down to visit my olds at Lake Munmorah. My wife and I fished Lake Mac hard using every lure in my tackle box for nothing, so you are not the only one. For some reason I have more luck in winter on the Lake.

  2. good stuff mate, i live on lake macquarie and tend to get most of my flatties thru winter, were abouts were u fishing?

Down the southern end. Launched at Kingfisher Shores then basically worked the channel markers on either side as we headed out towards the main bay.

    Nice flatties

can you tell me approx where you found the drop off as I am heading up tere is a couple of weeks

    Cheers

There are a lot of good drop offs all through the lake. Just look for the black cardinal markers.

Great couple of days fishing Steve - good to see your wife & kids get into them too! :1prop: Shame about the 'get offs' ..... hope the hooks hold next time!

Great meeting up with you on the water today - look forward to hitting the racks with you!

Thanks Roberta, next time I am heading out I will give you a call.

  3. just a quick question what is the smaller fish the young bloke caught?

    Tailor

Great couple of days there Steve and some tasty fillets for the family! Were the fish at the base of the drop-off in the deeper water?

Yeah Rob, all in the deeper water. Some were caught as far out as 20m from the actual drop.

  4. Last week the family and I headed down to my parents place for a few days of Lake Macquarie fishing. Last year we went down the same week in the school holidays and had an awesome time on the flatties so expectations were high.

Day one and the weather wasn't overly kind. No rain but an icy cold wind made it very difficult to hold in one spot for any length of time but we managed to do a "slow drift" with the anchor scraping along the bottom.

Things started slowly (i.e. not a touch for the first hour) and a half but just as I was thinking it wouldn't be our day, my youngest hooks up and pulls in a nice table sized fish at 43cm. It sucked the 100mm Killer Tomato Squidgy Fish so far down when I opened its mouth to retrieve the lure it was nowhere to be seen.

Over the next 2 hours things continued to happen. In the end we managed 5 keepers from 43 to 50cm but managed to lose 3 very big fish. My :wife: managed to get the net under my biggest which looked about the 70cm mark (I am telling myself it was no bigger because my pb is 72cm) but it crocodile rolled out and the line snapped as it hit the side of the boat. It was taken on a 100mm gold squidgy fish.

Both my youngest and my :wife: managed to lose fish in the same class. One was just bad luck as the hook pulled below the boat and the other I take full responsibility for as the knot gave way after a big boat side surge. I should have backed her drag off because it was only 4lb line.

The second day it was just the :wife: and I and things were a bit slower but we did manage one at 58cm and one at 60cm.

All fish, both landed and lost, were taken on 100mm squidgy fish in either Killer Tomato, Gold or Drop Bear and all right near a big drop off that went from 1m to 5m.

  5. That's terrific Steve!! Make sure you give me a yahoo when you arrive & we can get together your end of the beach or mine, to wet a line!! :) :) :) It'll be great to have some more keen fishos in the area!!

I chatted to another bloke during the week who visited here regularly & has just moved here with his family! I told him about Fishraider & I reckon it won't be long before he is posting some reports too! :) :)

    Roberta

I might just do that Roberta. Thanks for the offer.

  6. Hi Roberta. I love reading your reports because I, along with my wife and kids, have decided to move up to Hallidays Point early next year from the Blue Mountains. Everytime I read one of your reports I tell my wife "Roberta had another good day on the blackies. That will be us soon". Being a keen fisherwoman herself she is actually interested.

Keep those reports coming. It just gets me more excited about the move. :yahoo:

  7. AAHHH YES,

Gods country. Looks like you guys were blessed with calm waters, what part of the lake were you in when you took the pics ?

Fantastic results, and good to see you all out and about.

    Great post & pics.

    G'day Hobbitt.

    Chain Valley Bay.

An all round top family effort.....well done....my little bloke is in awe of your youngest fella's efforts....he wants to know when I'm taking him to a Lake Macquarie...

    G'day Poddy Trapper.

Mate I hope your young bloke manages to get one soon because the proud look on their face when it happens is fantastic to see. It sure helps promote the love of fishing.

The fish Scott gets are hard earned. He throws out as many casts in a day as the rest of us.

  8. My family and I just spent a week fishing Lake Macquarie. We went with the intention of fishing for tailor and bream but on the first day I saw a bloke at the boat ramp with some great flatties and a metre long jew. That had me changing plans. Over the next few beautiful days we caught a stack of flatties including four between the sizes of 73.5cm to 80cm (all four released of course).

My youngest (and keenest) caught and released 74.5cm, 74cm and an equal PB for him at 80cm. (He caught an 80cm model last year at Hawks Nest). My eldest (doesn't mind fishing but not real keen) caught and released a 73.5cm fish which was a PB for him by a long way.

The biggest I could manage was 63cm while my wifes biggest and new PB was 67cm.

We had the most amazing week and I am still on a high from it.

All fish were caught on pink or gold 100mm squidgies on half ounce jigheads using 6lb Fireline and 20lb fluorocarbon leaders. Amazingly with all the head thrashing that went on over the few days we didn't lose one fish.

  9. Well done Mick.

Were you in the lake or up river? What colour power bait did you use? Everyone seems to have luck on the pink but I have had all my success on the orange twist.

    Steve

  10. Can anyone advise of a good land based spot in the Hawkesbury that is family friendly? Maybe somewhere that has a bit of sand for the kids to play. I am coming down from Springwood (Blue Mountains) so not too far from the F3 would be good.

    Thanks.

  11. The time is my biggest problem. We didn't get there until 8.30am. I love it when the family come along, but it is hard to get them out of bed early enough. At different times I tried dual depth tassie devils, standard tassies in a few colours including yellow wings, rapala cd5 in rainbow trout colour, gold spoons and brown trout 50mm soft plastic fish. The ones behind the down rigger were also behind a silver 100mm dodger.

How big was your fish Roffo? Rainbow or brown? Were you using bait or lure?

  12. Just to let you know Roffo, we trolled for about 3.5 hours with 3 lines out. 1 at between 15 and 20m down, 1 at about 7m down and the other about 3m. Heaps of fish on the fish finder, mostly they were 15 to 18m down and not at all interested in our offerings. Top day for a cruise around the lake though. Only saw 1 other boat and they weren't fishing.

  13. I have seen and spoken to a few guys trolling with down riggers and they seem to be doing ok, one chap got 3 in just as many hours.

    Roffo

Hey Roffo, do you know if they are mainly picking up browns or rainbows or both?

  14. I,ve been 3 out of the 4 last week ends and bagged a total of 11 fish both on bait and on fly (dry)

I normally get there just after first light and fish till 10 or 11am.

    Roffo

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure what all the recent rain will do to the fishing but I still might give a bit of trolling a go.

  15. Hi, I live in Bathurst and haven't been to the lake for awhile.. It has only been about 2%... But with the recent rains it may be up a bit..better fishing over at windermere. and there has been a few red fin caught at Ben chifley dam :1fishing1::beersmile:

Thanks Yarraone, but I live in Springwood and Lithgow is about as far as I go for a day trip with the wife and kids. I am heading off with a mate in a few weeks though for an overnight trip and we haven't made up our minds where we are going. Haven't been to Ben Chifley before. What is in there besides redfin?
