  1. Hi all,

from pic lancer6, does anyone from here that knows what the hole (big one with 3 smaller screw holes) would have been there for?

i dont think it has anything to do with the transducer as there is a bracket right at the bottom of the transom.

from pic lancer3, can anyone help recommend how to patch up and paint as i dont think it is worth taking it to a workshop and have my arms and legs ripped off to get that fixed.

    thanks raiders

    Hi,

lancer6 pic - Looks like the spot where the cable running to the transducer "used to" emerge from the hull. Ive got the same 3 hole bracket on my boat - you can pic them up from most boating shops.

  2. Doing a bit of modifying of Boat

    The Question i have is

What do you use when sealing plywood edges in the boat/marine use ?

it will be rapped in Carpet.

Johnno, I use plain old waterproofing agent (like you would use when renovating the bathroom or use under wet area tiling), its cheap and had some left over. I paint all surfaces to be sure. Have used this in several boats now and it lasts for years (and probably indefinately as the timber is completely sealed with a good coat.

    cheers, Darren.

  3. I have a 1998 M40D DEPTO Tohatsu (40HP) motor. It has 3 cylinders. I know that the mercury motor of this year (the Japanese ones anyway) are the same motor. Can anyone tell me what the mercury model is? Thanks

    Caribe

Hey there, I have a 2006 40hp Merc 3cyl (the rebadged tohatsu), From looking on the leg the model # is ME40ELPTO as its the elec start power tilt version. Its the "40 Lightning XR" (sounds impressive eh ?)

    cheers.

  4. Tom Tom, Just a suggestion, but if you cant get a single icebox off the rack to meet your size requirement (as maybe they are too high in that length ?) then maybe look at two smaller ones side by side. I notice those new "Freedom" boats have this setup.

  5. Spinifex,

If you have any mods or attachments to your boat, stainless or otherwise, make sure the joins are coated with a non conductive galvanic corrosion inhibitor. Id say some brand names but not sure if thats allowed :biggrin2: just do a web search. cheers.

  6. I know we will be putting in a water tank in the near future, for exactly that - boat, car lawns, gardens, water the road occasionally & water the water police :074:

I still cant believe that a city of Sydney (including costal areas) is running out of water!!!!

Mate, It seems to be getting worse everyday. People on the central coast have been buying and installing tanks hand over foot. Its been raining and presumably we are saving Megaliters per day with usage of all this tank water, the council is dropping ground water bores everwhere to supplement the supply, they are raising the prices for water (hopefully for the infrastructure investment) - yet reports are that the dam capacity is still dropping every week ?? Work that out. Soon we reach the 10-12% capacity mark where level 5 restrictions may be introduced. God knows what then.... we start re-using bath water to keep clean :1prop::1prop::1prop:

Might finally have a real excuse to keep smelly.

  7. Hey guys!

The other day I got told off by a neighbour for flushing my engine! I know there are water restrictions, but what else are you supposed to do?

Are you meant to take it somewhere to flush? You can't flush them at those car wash's can you?

In syndey it's ok, but I think at cetral caost the water restriction level is different!

    Hey LocoDave,

If your on the (NSW) lower Central coast then you cant flush, level 4 water restrictions :1badmood: I think Swansea and northwards is OK though (different water supply). Im around Woy Woy so I installed 2 small 500L tanks that keep me in just enough water to clean boat and car. You'll probably have to resort to the garbage bin left out in the rain unless you want to install some tanks. :biggrin2:

  8. From my limitted understanding, each time you polish bare alum you remove the small layer of oxide thats built up. This oxide apparently does provide some limitted protection to the metal so I dont think its a good idea to do this regularly. I keep mine nice and dirty

  9. Doesnt this type of thing just drive you nuts ???!!??

Theres a few of this type up Brisbane Water way also who feel the necessity to cruise past within 10m when your fishing a nice quiet spot out of the way. Makes me want to scream and yell.... but then i try rationalise and remember that we cant stop idiots getting car licenses either.

  10. Can anyone recommend a place to service my Mercury 2 stroke 50HP engine somewhere in teh central coast?

LocoDave, If in Gosford area try HiTorque Marine at West Gosford, I take my 40HP Merc 2 str there and customer service and work is exceptional.

  11. Thanks Darren.

Where abouts did u get the workshop Manual from?

    Methodman,

I remember it was a "Clymer" workshop manual and i ordered it online. My memory is fading and I cant remember the exact site, but you can get them from places like www.marque.com.au and I think pitstop.net.au online. just do a google search and you'll get several distributors. I think the prices may be up around the $70 mark now, but still good value if you intend to do your own servicing.

  12. Does anyone have any advice or tips for doing your own oil change on a 4 stroke?

    Its a 115 Merc 4 stroke.

A mate of mine did mention the Gear Box oil to be alittle tricky.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Gday, I had a 98 25hp 4 stroke Merc that I did my own services on - if you are a bit handy with mechanicals you should be fine. I outlayed the $40 on a workshop manual and it basically paid for itself after the first use.

Changing the oil(s) was pretty simple. The gearbox lube comes in a tube - and you remove the screws and 'sqeeze' it in... Most challenging was the first time I did the impeller change. Had to drop off the gearbox and disconnect linkages etc which was a bit difficult single handed. Changing corrosion control anodes was pretty easy on this engine also.

Anyway, Im sure theres plenty on this site would could advise you if you got stuck. Im an IT geek and if I can fumble my way through it then most wouldnt have any issues :biggrin2: Good luck

  13. I had a similar problem the motor would trim up but would not go down. I found the relays and swapped them over and then it would not go up. problem dickie relay but which one? For the sake of $50 I replaced both and have not had a problem since.

    Pete

Hi, Had exactly the same issue as pirate pete with my previous merc. Replaced both and that fixed it up.

  14. Darren G,

Love the look of you 460 dory. I've got the 420 and its a good boat, but yours lis that much deeper and bigger... I want it!

    Hey Dezmo, Thanks mate.

Yeah I think its the best thing since sliced bread. Ive only had it around 6 weeks and busy fitting it out. Its around 750mm from chine to top of sides, and the floor comes another approx 100mm lower so you feel pretty safe in it when it gets messy. It will fish all the conditions that I want to fish in anyway. I havent seen the 520 Dory but it must be like fishing from a football field.

  15. Ive had mine for a year now and Im quite happy with it, I did add solid legs to the rear though as they do "wobble" a bit as the speed climbs. If youve got the dollars a custom is the way to go.

    GT

Thanks Sqizzytaylor. Yeah, I think I'll go for the solid legs also. Will buy/fit it this weekend hopefully. Had some 38 deg C days on the central coast last few weeks so I think its gunna be needed this summer (even if it does get in the way occassionally).

    cheers, Darren.

  16. Hey ive started this threat because im interested in seeing everyones tinny setups..... No big boats allowed lol. Hope to see some nice pics soon.

Heres the interior of my 460 Dory so far. Have recently added a Eagle 480 sounder also.
