Carp are no kingfish but name any southern native that pulls much more than 10/15m of line. 8 kg carp will pull any bass backwards.
Power to weight ratio mate, no comparison.
I've been owned by bass on the same gear i've man handled carp on.
Anyway not looking to start anything, intersting to hear everyone's opinions.

Get rid of the filthy things, rotting carcasses is the big worry. In terms of the balance of native fish stocks, the eco system will re-balance, nature always finds a way. Spotted carp(trout) should be eradicated as well........(that will get a few going )
I couldn't disagree more about them putting up a good fight, I've caught hundreds of the things on both bait and sight casting with lures. You can knock over 6-8 kg carp on 8lb braid and a 3-5 kg stick in no time, after 1 or 2 short runs it's like hauling in a wet blanket.
I think the simple fact is that we all need to live with the idea that the cat is out of the bag, they are here and unlikely to ever be successfully removed unfortunately........

Did you do the special dance??
From my experience.....
Baro 1020+ good
Full moon bad
Hard running water, good, target the edges of eddies.
Try once, repeat then do the exact opposite!

One of Sydneys best kingfish guides doesnt bother with the FG even on heavy gear and he catches plenty. Other alternative if you have to use a long leader then just retie every couple of hours.
Are we talking about belting out long distance casts here? Fishing out of a boat where you are lowering baits, dropping in lures or mildly flicking them might be ok. I've found albrights in the heavier classes, say 50lb braid to 100lb leader and up will catch repeatedly on the first or second guide from the reel and cause all sorts of horrid tangles. FG all the way for the heavy stuff. 30lb braid to 60lb leader and down etc I've never had a problem with albrights.

Hardly a week goes by where the thought of how amazing a no-commercial-fishing-Hawkesbury might be but, I can see good arguments on all sides of the equation ....
Sydney Harbour is your answer Henry. It bewilders me that so much of our commercial catch is sent offshore, I'd be more supportive of commercial catch if more stayed here.

Great haul off the beach, well done!

It is the most famous and unfortunately crowded spinning ledge in the eastern coast situated at little bay, need I say more? XD
Nice Kingy.
Most crowded, maybe. Most famous, not a chance! lol
Is anyone throwing big poppers or stickbaits down there atm?

Mate if you will have access to the hire car forget Sydney and head straight to Jervis Bay. A google search on LBG down that way will have you sorted out fairly quickly.

Lures take fish but fly seems to be the way to go from what I have seen.
Yes have compression bandages handy, the place is teaming with snakes........

Thanks. Not really, I got them high in the water column and used the swell to bring in. Weaker fish pound for pound compared to trevally, tuna, snapper and kings.
Thanks Andy.
thanks Green hornet. Pound for pound I think they're pretty weak. Mac Tuna, even the little ones, zzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzz!
You're only messing with the pups, wait til you start getting into the soccer balls!

Restaurants by them..........

Terrible from 30lb and up, wirey, but love it under that.

How long was it out of the water before the pic was taken? The last Blue I caught had a vivid electric blue tinge all over the fish.

I always despatch/bleed immediately and then place my catch on ice.
I've heard about not using fresh water, but what does it actually do to the flesh? Is there any basis to the theory or just old fisherman's tales?
Interesting question, what is it supposed to do?
I rinse almost everything in fresh as most of my cleaning is done at home. I'm talking blackfish, drummer, bream, kings, jews, mackerel, snapper, squid you name it I'll rinse it in fresh.
Interestingly I have a mate who is sure he can tell when fish/squid has been rinsed in fresh as it "spoils it". Soooooo...... i go to the effort of cleaning by the sea one day(king fillet & squid), rinsing in salt water only. Once home I prepare another fillet which had been left on the frame and another squid, both rinsed in fresh. He comes over for dinner and I fill him in as to what is going on and ask him to tell me which is which, he couldn't tell the difference and to be honest neither have I been able to.

Never eaten carp, but:
Mowies (would rather eat a shit sandwich)
Sole I caught in Port Hacking (like eating leather)
Large jackets
Kelp fish (also called cockies)
Large salmon (though will eat it if nothing else is available)
Not sure about red mowies but the blue ones are excellent on the plate IMO.
Snapper and bream, I don't get the hype.

I didn't attack anyone, was trying to help the original poster , that was the only intention for my post. Its ok, you guys go fish your 10lb if it makes you happy or if it is more suitable in the area you fish or size of fish you catch.
-1 to anyone saying a kingfish outfit should comprise of 10lb anything ....since everyone wants to give scores.
+1
24kg main line and 100 pound leader, if you want to live dangerously drop down to 15kg and 80 pound leader!

How much room do the blokes at the tubes need (can i fish say, 500m from the shore there etc?) or do i just take an extra wide berth around the place (im guessing if im getting pelted with sinkers im too close? )
Mate give them at least 1km, better to be safe than sorry
The average 50w will hold 700 meters give or take of 24kg mono.
What if they are fishing 15kg.......?
What if they are fishing braid with a top shot.......?

Sounds like a side by side field test is in order to settle this old chestnut. Cheapies for me..........

Braid needs to be wound on under very high tension to avoid it biting in when you have something ripping it off at high speed with heavy drag.
I always tend to use a little mono under the braid.
