  1. My three Samurai rods are all one piece Reaction rods. I have the 251, 351 and 201. The first two are baitcast rods and I believe that they have been discontinued. The 7' 201 spin rod is still current and Samurai have increased the range of spin rods that they make. I fish very light and these rods have proved themselves time and time again. Recently the 201 was able to subdue a 72 cm flatty with 4lb braid loaded on a 1000 series Daiwa Luvias reel. The rod absorbed the shocks well and I never felt as though the fish was going to win the day. All of these rods are so sensitive that you can feel the fish farting. I've owned truckloads of rods over the years, but rate the Three Samurai rods as the top three I own. I recently had mishap and lost my Daiwa tournament Master Z Slayer and will replace it with a Reaction 302 Spin rod. I will match it with a 2500 series reel, probably a Daiwa Luvias again because I've had such a good run with those. That said, The Shimanos that you have are perfectly good reels and, yes. it would probably be a good idea to take them to the tackle shop and try them on the rods that you like.

    Cheers

Thanks mate I really apreciate your response.

I'll definitely be checking out the new Reaction range soon and hopefully I'm as impressed as everyone else seems to be, I'm sure i will be :)

  2. Hi,

I haven't used a Viper, so I can't comment directly, but I do have the Sniper 3 pce, 10' 6", surf rod and can comment on the build etc. The Nitro blanks are excellent and the build is very nice. The action is "as described" in the Nitro Innovator literature. I was very pleasantly surprised at how lightweight they are, while still retaining good strength. I matched my Sniper to a 3000 series Daiwa Luvias reel and it balances perfectly. I suspect that a 4000 reel may be a little on the large side for both of the rods you are looking at, whereas the 2500 reel would possibly work well on both rods.

Good luck with your research. I believe that you won't go wrong with Nitro rods. If in doubt, another brand to consider might be Samurai. I have three of their rods and, frankly, they are nothing short of sensational. Some of their models are a little bit over your stated price range (RRP) but with a bit of bargaining (haggling) you should be able to get close to what you have in the budget.

    Cheers

    Hi mate,

    Thanks for your response.

I've actually been looking at Samurai rods the last few days aswell. The reaction and Kestrel models seems great so i would be ok stretching my budget given the components they have, which models do you have and what do you run with them?

Thanks for the additional information on the Nitro rods it seems i should take my reels to a store that sells both the Nitro and Samurai ranges and see how i go with feeling.

    Appreciate your time.

    Regards,

  3. Hi mate, have a lighter nitro (the ultralight spin) and it's s great rod, nitro under rate their power and their tapers are interesting. Firm and quite smooth in transition buy very ballsy.

Theyre slightly on the heavy side so I'd try and chuck the 2500 on the rod before you buy as the ci4 reels are quite light. The 4000 I'd say would be fine though.

I'm in the same boat as pete with the line class, although the nitro are unbreakable if you want to get the full performance out of 20 lb up the rod class.

    Thanks for your response mate.

I hadn't thought about the weight of the rod until you mentioned it. I've only read about the distance spin being paired with a Sustain which is a bit heavier than the stradic ci4+ so i will definitely need to test that out if i go that route.

I'm quite sure I've read the ci4+ 4000 and baby viper being paired quite a few times and i'm happy to drop the line rating to increase its performance.

I know their guarantee is great but I guess I'm just wondering if theres any newer rods that would be better i suppose.

    Thanks again!

  4. Someone that has owned these rods will know more, but I believe the guides may be either alconite or titanium SiC's. If they are the latter, then I'd say they are still up to date as they are probably the best choice atm.

Potentially, the latest and greatest guides are probably the AGS ones from Daiwa but they are exclusive to Daiwa and also their longevity at this point in time is questionable.

Since we are talking Ci4+, then I assume a 2500 would be okay on the 2-4kg distance spin. I've have tried a baby viper on a sustain 3000FG which seemed to balance well. That would suggest a 4000 Ci4+ would be a suitable size.

P.S. If you plan to run 20lb on the 4000, then I reckon the baby viper is way to light a rod to handle that. Maybe the magnum butt or viper is more appropriate for that line class.

    Cheers for your response nbdshroom.

The majority of the nitro rods use alconite guides, I believe only the vapor 60 and 70 have the titanium SiC's.

Checked out the daiwa AGS range but i think their out of my range in terms of price considering i need to get two rods.

I'm keen to look at other suggestions, I only mentioned nitro because their what i have heard of in my price range except they are a few years old and even older on some other models.

It's just hard finding information on new rods like the Shimano Anarchy for instance. I guess i just need to keep searching on the internet for what people like.

Appreciate your response nbdshroom, I enjoy reading your other posts as their quite informative on all fishing topics!

  5. Hi Raiders

I'm currently in the market for a couple of new rods.

I have two new shimano stradic ci4+ in sizes 2500 and 4000 which i want to get rods for I will probably run 6-10lb on the 2500 and 20lb on the 4000.

I've been looking at Nitro rods and a couple of megabass rods. My price is around 200-400 each.

I was thinking of matching the Nitro baby viper with the 4000 and possibly the Nitro distant spin for the 2500.

I'm wondering if the components of the rods are still up to date given a couple of the rods are some years old.

Would appreciate any advice in regards to rods within my price range and if anyone has experience with Nitro or megabass rods and if you have these reels matched to a certain rod which you enjoy.

    Thanks for your time.
