Low salinity,,go out the seamounts theyll be covered in kingfish,,look around reefs offshore that usually arent known for kingfish that are holding bait,,what youve all been doin the last 5 or 6 years before the the floods was all according to high salinity waters inshore due to years of drought,,thats all changed the last year

Was about the write the same thing mate, The best fishing I can remember was during the big drought!

Spend alot of time on the Hawkesbury, The muddies, flatties and Jew were absolutely going nuts!

  2. I fish Berowra alot, 9 times out of 10 I put the boat in there and just motor to my chosen fishing grounds.

Bait around the marina is plentiful.. Gars, yakkas and mullet.

I know alot of the locals and a few swear there has been squid up there before, others reckon they are dreaming! I have never seen it personally and stick to using herring for most of of my live bait needs.

  3. One of the most important parts of getting fish started, and keeping them going in my opinion.

I use wheat, half a bucket soaked with boiling water over night, Stir in 2 tins of my special cat food and a dash of tuna oil.

Everything comes up with there guts full of it, Even the next day!

I was berleying a spot one day, The next day a mate of mine pulled up a 52cm bream with his guts full of my mix.

    Cheers

Great report Jono. That is a really nice Jewie and perfect eating size. Well done mate.

I know the feeling of getting those soapie (a mate and I boated & released 32 in an hour recently - all on prawns).  I always struggle to let the subsequent legal Jewies go after having one in the Esky.

Herring are a great Jewieq bait, but I’ve had a lot more success on the saltwater once’s around Berrowra and Spencer (when the water warms to over 20degrees), than the smaller freshwater ones up around d Wisemans at this time of year - I’d be interested in your opinion on this?

    Thanks Bob!

Definately fed myself and the family for a meal or 2, was beautiful!

It is a struggle letting the legal ones go after you already have one, I know that feeling.. the hardest thing is making the decision "do I keep this 80cm for a feed, or put it back and hope for a 95" 🤣

Definately agree mate! I know people have been using the fresh water ones up the river as butterflied baits, I wouldn't waste my time. The saltwater ones you mentioned in Berowra and Spencer are what I use, and always will. (Hence why I use Berowra ramp, I have to go past the baitgrounds to get upto my fishing spots)

During the drought - 2017 ish. Were using herring caught up around wisemans, and were extremely sucessful, but there was definately no fresh around then.

I just put in, grab bait from either place and motor up into gods country when I'm fishing up there now.

Quite a long session yo-jono with plenty of fish to keep you occupied. Unusual having a tiller steer 70HP motor, sounds like it goes like a beauty though. Great catch that big Jewie, well done. bn

Yeah mate! I try and make the most of a good tide for the spots I fish. I just roll the swag out on the deck and goto sleep.

Perfect setup for me with the F70 tiller steer, the boat is a dream to use. (I do love my tillers though, makes it easier when crabbing)

    Cheers mate!

  6. Afternoon Ladies/Gents.

Put the boat in last Monday morning at Berowra, at sparrows fart with a plan, Get bait and send it out the river for a Session.

All went to plan, Put in at 0530 and motored to my bait spot and filled the tank with live herring for the next 24 hours.

I have only recently updated my outboard from a 40HP merc 2 stroke to an F70 4 stroke Yammy (both Tiller steers) Boat is an absolute beast now - With half the fuel usage!

Motored about 50k's from where I launched and anchored up on a spot for the top of the tide and start of the runout. I was fishing with fresh prawns and nothing but soapie, after soapie, after soapie.. And a little flattie around 35CM, would of caught about 20 in the 40-50 CM range before I pulled the prawn rods in and just ran livies.

Motored to a spot not far away for the bottom of the tide, 2 hours before the bottom - as the water started slowing,  I started berleying hard with my home made secret mix!

About 30 Minutes before the bottom Rod buckled, Livie gone straight into the mouth of a 94CM Jew.

I moved to another spot for the run in tide, 20 minutes after I set my baits I had a run, grabbed the rod and before I could strike the bait was spat - Herring come up with a nice set of teeth marks - Second hook would of prevented this.

Rest of that tide was quite uneventful, Was now approaching sundown so I motored back to where I got the Jew as I am happier anchoring there for the night.

Anchored up, Baits down, Swag unrolled and of to sleep I went.

Woke up to a screamer around 0230, took me straight into the structure I didn't want it to and POP! That one was gone. I went back to sleep, woke up in the swag around 0630 to another rod losing line rapidly - Got it to the boat and it was a 3ft bullshark! So, Lines and done for me.

I motored back to the beach and set myself up there to cook breakfast and have a coffee before I ventured back to the ramp and went home.

    Cheers

    Jono

P.s Apologies for the crappy photos - I am only just trying to tell myself to remember to take them.

Finally invested in a Brag mate instead of the tape measure for the next trip.

Sounds like a great day, I was wondering if you have any tips for targeting jewfish in the Hawkesbury as I’m heading up there this weekend and hoping on having the chance to land my first jewie.

    Thanks

  9. Afternoon All.

Fished Berowra on Monday and Tuesday.

Weather was that annoying nuisance, miserable drizzly rain all day! Didn't stop. I was planning to camp out on the tinny overnight but didn't feel like getting too wet.. So Just went home for the night and back in the morning.

Bait is plentiful in the System, Herring is schooling in most of the bays between Bennets and the ferry (pulling up full strings on a sabiki Jig) after a bit of Berley.

Sat in a few usual spots, But I wasn't watching the tides too much.. Didn't seem to be whole lot of action on the flatties.

Did pull up a few nice Jew, between Legal and 90 (all went back - Only chasing a monster at the moment) All at the top of the tide and start of the runout.

Took a drift whilst I made a coffee and had a bite to eat and pulled up a 68cm Flatty on a livey, And a 43cm Bream on a butterflied bait.

Water seemed to be clearer between Bennets bay and the Ferry than it was further towards barpoint.

Seen alot of herring schools getting chased, What looked like a few sharks on the sounder.

Water was around 18 C, Warming up nicely!

Will head back out Monday after the weekend at work and see what I can muster up, still deciding to stay in Berowra for now or head up the top of the river and get a few flatties.

No photos - I need to remember to get my phone out and take some, Never have really been one to take them.. I will make a mental note for next time.

    Cheers

    Jono

  10. I had 2 single cab landcruisers, Now on a dual cab.

The way I see it at nearly 30, If I don't have kids in the next 10 years I'll go back to a single cab.

    Miss the single cab alot!

At the start of lockdown I gave my boat a big birthday..

New F70 Tiller steer, Custom underfloor tanks and rearrange the  floor space to suit my swag better.

First trip will be the Hawkes, go through the run in procedure.

Then fishing the Hawkesbury, Anywhere from Dads corner out to pittwater and the reefs..

November hoping to scoot upto Ballina and fish our way back down the coast at various stops!

    Can't wait

Come to think of it.. I really only fish the hawkesbury of a weekday in summer (joys of roster) haha! I need to go and have a look around some new waterways.

Isn’t it exciting planning a road fishing trip like that.
    For me, I’d add…..

    Wooli/Minnie waters

    Areas around Coffs

    North Haven

     Crowdy/ Harrington

    Forster and the Great Lakes

    Seal Rocks

    And of course PORT STEPHENS

    Cheers scratchie!!!

    Thanks Scratchie!

I'll spend nightshift tonight having a read about a few extra stops, Super exciting planning this trip and especially with the boat having a big birthday at the moment ha!

Inlaws used to live at North Haven and I  loved to visit.  I used to fish Southern wall for Luderick and bream as well as jewies at night.  I believe this wall is second to none for jew if your lucky enough to get there during the mullet run.  Ron

    Thanks Ron!

I went up there in March last year for a week and there was so much fresh in the System.. soooo many herring in the place and our usual drifts of the wall produced nothing but massive bream! In the past drifting livies and flicking plastics has produced 70+ cm flatties every drift.

When do the mullet usually run up there?

If your mate is not that mobile Manning Point has a Caravan/camping park with good facilities, easy boat ramp for the river and walk over the dunes to the beach. Limited facilities. Or Harrington on the north side has easier access 7 minutes off the Highway, better road, more facilities & several Parks and ocean access at Crowdy. More people though AND probably from Sydney!!! - M.Point nice & quiet. Just the shop & Club!! Let me know when you get close (70cm flatties are bycatch)

Yeah mate! I love manning point, Have spent alot of time there over the years.. Heaven on earth! His mobile enough to get around and do normal day to day things, We only fish out of a 4.3 metre tinny (which is a beast, 2.1 beam and super stable) but crossing bars and any sort of swell and he can't stand up for long. Camping etc. is still fine, I have camped at farquar a few times - The dredge is currently working the channel too 😁 I will definately let you know when we decide to do a trip!

If you'd like to go offshore with a mate that has limited mobility a charter may be a good option. I know an excellent one at Yamba, drop me a line if you'd like their details.

    Cheers

    Rob

Thanks Rob, I will have a yarn to him and see what he reckons. We have family friends that fish daily at SWR aswell.

Ballina is a good start. The jetty is the go, jewies at night time.

Have a great time when you decide to go.

    Cheers.

Thanks Rebel! I was wondering is it worth the long run upto Ballina as a starting point - Sounds like it is!

Since you've only got 2 weeks, I'd start at Yamba and work your way down, systems like the bellinger/kalang, nambucca and surrounding small creeks have decent jack and gt fishing as an extra option

I'm now based in Port Macquarie, when you're in the area drop me a message and I'll show you some areas on the Hastings or even a jack session on the Nambucca

Beauty mate! Was thinking Yamba over Ballina as a starting point to be honest.

GT! Now that would be awesome.

Will definately shoot you a message then mate, Would be tops! We usually goto Laurieton each year in March for a week, although this years trip was pretty dissapointing - nothing but bream haha!

Jono. 2 weeks that's a good break, lets hope by the time you are ready to do it the restrictions will be gone.

Sounds like you are going to avoid going offshore ?.

Here's what I would do IF I had 2 weeks to travel with a mate and was fit enough.

Firstly I would head straight up to Geraldton Qld and go to Lake Awoonga , spend 2-3 days there fishing for Barramundi then I would start heading south, stop off at Lake Monduran for a couple of days barra and Bass fishing, some monster Bass that will pull your arms out of their sockets. Permits needed locally available and reasonably priced.

That would basically take care of the first week, then I would work my way down the coast stopping at the places you have mentioned. And especially fishing the upper reaches of some of the bigger rivers targeting Mangrove Jack.

    Good luck with your plans.

    Frank

Thanks Frank! Yeah, 10 days - 2 week'ish 🤣 Just going to pick a first destination and work it out from there.

Not avoiding offshore completely, I don't venture outside alot. My mate had an extremely bad bike accident last year and can no longer fish out of his tinny - Can hardly drive.

I have noted down both of them places for stops when I head upto QLD myself at a later date - Thanks so much for that!

Wouldn't be able to spend that much time on the road with him unfortunately with one leg that doesn't bend haha!

So we were just going to keep it to NSW for this trip, Head as far north as the fishing is worth within the home state and then plod back from there. Another reason for NSW only is the COVID situation within the country and short notice border closures etc. Easier to keep it within NSW.

    Cheers

    Jono
