  1. Mate, looks like your friends tried to set you up with the Ex Girlfriend....

I would be looking at them VERY suspiciously next time they invite you to a BBQ.

    But....

on the plus side, looks like the ex GF brought you luck on the soft plastics.

You may have to drag her around on your fishing trips....

Also you didn't mention if you came back to your BBQ group boasting about your catch....

    Did you ?

Or did you do the runner and go home ?

In any case, you are a better man than me because I tried SP fishing and didn't do so well - and went back to bait fishing....

    Tony

I don't want to speculate about what my friends may or may not have done in regards to the ex.

Maybe she did bring the luck. Did I mention that she's a vegetarian?

I brought it back to my group who aren't fishos so they didn't really understand the special meaning of my cherry popping experience.

  2. What a magnificent way to start summer for a new fisho!

Been about 3 weeks of reading weather charts, techniques, moon phases, endless youtube videos and taking in all the helpful advice from FR all for today. I headed to Kurnell (A spot I had been 4 times ever since I started taking fishing seriously about 2 months ago with no result) and got there at 6 30am knowing high tide was due at 730am. Had a 12ft rd using garlic chicken. Nothing. Had an 8ft using school prawns I bought from the fish markets the day before. Nothing. Had an 8ft rod I was flicking a 70mm Squidgey black and gold SP with. Nothing.

Fishing until about 11am when my friends came to have a bbq and exercise. One of them brought his jet ski. They were all expecting for me to catch something to which I had to reply with a big fat duck egg.

After a tasty BBQ my mate took me on my first jet ski ride which was freaking awesome I usually hate them when I'm fishing but today it was unreal. (We stayed in deep water)

After lunch I knew low tide was due at 1:30pm. Somehow at the picnic table all my friends had left to go swimming leaving just my Ex-girlfriend and I alone... So I did what any decent fisho would do. I said I was going for a walk, quickly picked up my SP stick and went on my way.

Flick, pull pull, reel, wait, pull pull x 10 times.

Flick, pull pull, reel wait, pull suddenly there's a weight the tip is bending. It doesn't feel like seaweed... ZZzzz RIP reel reel reel about 1 metre from the shore I can see a croc. CMON!!! reel an inch in closer. ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz He's off! I scream "I'm on" to a stranger who is also flicking nearby. OH no you don't! I've been waiting for you! And I land him in about 2 minutes!

    Smiling from ear to ear.

I'm no cook but I can use a fry pan. Olive oil, cracked salt and pepper. Some bubble and squeak from Aldi's with some tomato sauce.

I've caught and cooked my own dinner tonight. :)

I love this beautiful country! What a start to summer for me!

  3. Hello Raiders,

Still new to fishing, I went to a local spot on the Georges river with fresh school prawns and was using a 4 - 7kg rod 12lb line & 20pb leader with with a sliding ball sinker with a size 6 hook and whole prawn. All I got were nibbles and snags so I changed to a 4lb flouro carbon leader, no sinker and size 4 hook. I got this little bait thief and I reckon I caught her 2 times after throwbacks. It was still fun to catch something.

When little breams like this are about that does indicate anything else?

    Cheers.

  4. Welcome to Australia Dave.

Try youtube (www.youtube.com), type "soft plastics" for technique and rigging. Hopefully you get a chance where it's not 4 seasons in 1 day while you're here. I'm no expert but keep your set up light. Goodluck!

  5. Hello Raiders,

2 weeks ago I returned from a trip to Kurnell and for the first time I used soft plastics. I didn't catch anything although my friend who was teaching me caught 3 flatties and he said it was a slow day. I was addicted.

On the way back driving down Milperra Road I was rear ended by a P-plater who I suspect was on his mobile phone. Not only did he not have any insurance but it also snapped my beach rod. Not to worry. The car is currently at the smash repairs thank comprehensive insurance for that.

Since this time I have been back to Kurnell to flick again with no luck. Georges river at Liverpool with no luck.

Georges River at Picnic point today both at high tide and low tide with no luck I was using a squidgey black and gold 70mm flick tail. my friend tells me my gear is decent enough just need more practice. I even had bait on other rods while I flicked, just nibbles on them. (I packed my hiking bag and got on my kawasaki ninja 250) All in all it was a great day I got to ride my bike, packed my hiking bag (I volunteer as a scout leader for my local group) and I got to fish. Only thing missing was catching them.

So if you've read this far, I am asking for some help.

I have my own transport, gear (am willing to purchase on advice) and free on most sat sun and mondays. I am based in south west Sydney and am 30 minutes within picnic point 1 hour within Port Botany.

    Cheers Frank.

  6. Hey Dazza,

Mate I've only just started myself but I was going to head down to picnic point tomorrow for a flick with SP's and maybe leave a baited hook in as well. I've never been but a fellow raider has told me he's caught bream and whiting there with prawns. High tide is at 11 30am so maybe about 10am until about 1pm or a bit longer. Wind isn't ideal but it's all practice.... Let me know.

  7. Hey,

I'm no expert but what has worked for me is leaving one rod with a paternoster rig with a ganged pilli sitting in the gutter and being active with a lighter set up (letting it move with the current etc) where I've landed a dart fish, bream, salmon, tailor. Most memorable moment was falling asleep on the beach (Mungo brush) as we were camping and being woken up by my mates saying that my line was screaming. Pulled up a nice Salmon. Was a great feeling catching fish in my sleep!

No idea about baits though but reading up on here had some great information.

  9. Hello Raiders,

New to fishing (And loving it) and posting.

Fishing in a wharf in Cabarita on a friends boat using prawns and a really light set up. (picked that up that lingo from here... Don't really know much about what I'm using...yet).

Got a crap load of small breams, tailors and snappers before I landed this beautiful 40cm creature. I think I'm in love... With fishing that is.

I'm free most weekends and Mondays provided the missus lets me out if anyone wants to teach me. I have my own gear and a car, based in Southwest Sydney and willing to drive anywhere within 2 hours of it. :fishing1:

    Thank you fellow raiders.

    Frank.
