  1. Hi all

I am going to be getting some fresh Bonito for use as bait for beach fishing here in the Solomons.

Can anyone tell me how you treat it to be able to use it later? I will be using it fresh but I want some ready for 'sudden' trips as well.

    Cheers and thanks in advance

  2. I literally used to live down the road and fished there as often as i could.

Got good bream on chicken there, nevr gor a flattie, got busted off by something huge though a faior few times, try downriver towards the larger jetty...might have been a jew.

    Simon

Would these areas be likely places/structure to target bream and flatties on SPs/HBs? I've caught bream, flatties and whiting here on bait but no luck with SPs, the substrate is mainly sand and more towards the mangroves mud. The water around this location is under 1 metre

    Under this mangrove is sand

    post-6576-1229659030_thumb.jpg

This mangrove is in mud and with a fair bit of rocks around with oysters growing on them.

    post-6576-1229659069_thumb.jpg

This is towards the right/further out of the picture above, likewise, mud.

A concrete jetty, both sides sand, this is where iget most of my whiting, up close and out further, the jetty is visible in the first photo.

So, are these areas likely places to target bream/flatties on SPs/HBs, around the jetty always holds small prawns and also small fish. To the left of the jetty always holds mullets jumping around

    Thanks, Ray.

  3. >Simon, you can email me on dreamtime@solomon.com.sb

    Will do mate and thanks.

    >Zenman, this time of the year it's a little unstable due to the vast numbers of people in the capital. School >has finished for the year so there are plenty of "bored" students lurking about.

    >2 nights ago snip>

What night and which area was it mate, I will light a couple of fires under people and see if we can't improve the score.

  4. Hi All

I've been quiet for a while as I have been posted to the Solomon Islands with work (I am in the AFP). Have finally managed to set myself up with a nice rig and am keen tog et amongst it, the fish here are incredible.

Has anyone fished the Solomons before? If so do they have any hints or tips?

Appreciate any advice anyone can give me

    Cheers

    Simon

  5. i agree with jewgaffer,

    nice tips there mate......

was the run long? or fast?? or both...

flathead can swim bloody fast and hard, but only for short distances... like 20 metres , but if it was a long first run i would bet jew (or stingray lol)...

It wasn't a flattie, it was a good solid hit then a dash for the bottom or a rock, really could feel the tail going.

Thanks for all the tips, would anyone suggest possibly a heavy handline under a float?

    Simon

  6. Obviously I didn't catch this rotten thing but I want to so hence the questions.,

I was fighgin down at the end of Old Ferry Road opposite Lugarno on Saturday. I was about 100 metres from the loading ramp on the ramins of the old wharf there.

I was using whole prawn for bait targeting some large Bream. Now I know bream bites and this wasn't it.

Was a single powerful hit, followed by a fast swim down into the snags on the bottom, or perhaps even into the rocks. I could feel the fish swimming hard then the line would snag up.

I don't think it's a flattie because if it is it's a monster, it felt really hard and strong.

Any ideas? I have caught a tailor here before but it just zoomed off and didn't swim for the bottom, likewaise Bream. Even the flatties I catch don't do it. Anything else it might be and some advice on how to stop it happening/catch it?

    Cheers and thanks in advance.

    Simon

btw I am using a light 6 ft rod with 8 pouind mono for the trace, a running sinker above a swivel and a long shanked hook.

  7. Cungee George rolled up again with a couple of rods this time for a jew and we all talked till six o'clock on Sunday night without checking a single rod for the last two hours and there was no need to whatsover.

    Cheers

jewgaffer :1fishing1: I'll post the night time pics when I manage to resize them.

JG I live just around the corner, literally, from that spot and regularly fish off the small platform about 100 metres to the right of the boatramp, near the submarine cable. I get a fair few undersized bream and flatties there. However haven't ever seen a blink of a Jew, unless that's the big hit that simply snaps the line and buggers off once in a while!

What would you recommend for land based jewies of the point nearby that you mentioned, I would love to catch a decent sized fish as a 32 cm bream is my PB for anything.

  8. Seems the water in the Georges, as well as being cleaner has started to warm up. Fished the top of the tide today at Illawong across from Lugarno and managed a goos sized bream, two undersized and a lizard that was long but a little scrawny so I tossed him back as well.

Lots of other bites but my reflexs must be shot.

i have a question, when people fish for Luderick, do they often throw fist sized balls of weed and dirt into the river?

    Simon

  9. Hi everyone

It seems my usual spot at the boat ramp in Illawong has dried up. Anyone got any other spots on the Georges they would be willing to share?

Would like to have a go at some big Flathead.

    Cheers

    Simon

  10. Hi Raiders

Is there any places that sell this book still

    cheers robert

Borders Book Shops have them if the shop is big enough, try the one in Pitt Street mall.

Failing that the huge on in Canberra of all places had two a couple of months ago, they can obviously source it. maybe there could be a group order?

    Simon

  11. Sound like decent Tailor to me. That would explain the bite offs.

    Cheers,

    Grant.

I had wondered about that, but the water is really murky at the moment and quyite a lot of fresh coming down so I didn't think they would be that far up.

    I thought maybe a Luderick?

    Simon

  12. Hey all

I have been out a couple of times lately, in the usual spot in the Georges across from Lugarno.

I have had a couple of bites that puzzle me. They don't seem to nibble at the bait, they just swallow it, you feel a couple if tugs then a pull and when you set the hook the fish seems to simply try to swim away.

The one last night swam into some rocks and broke off and the others have all either bitten off or pulled the hook.

They don't fight like bream and it has been ages since I caught a flatty so I am not sure but what else could they be,

    heavy buggers whatever they are.

    Simon

  13. Just out of inerest , would you prefer an 1m kingy or a 1m jew & why :biggrin2:

    Thanks guys :1fishing1:

Just a 1 metre fish of any kind would be amazing..hell a 50cm fish would do lol....

Current records 32 cm Bream, I kid you not

    Simon

  14. Nice fish there Simonator. What bait were you using?

I used Chicken offcuts, the fatty gristly bits from the edges of breast fillets

Got a bite with every cast but think I was using to large a peice of chicken sometimes.

    Simon

  15. Good fish there mate...

where you fishing in the goerges??? you land based or boat???

Mate I am landbased, I fish around the Illawong boat ramp, near the old ferry ramp. Along there and upstream towards the alfords point about 150 mts is about my limit, Unfortunately I don;t have a boat.

    Simon

  16. As soon as I get the pic down small enbough I will post it.

Went out at just after high tide as the water was on the way out and snagged two very nice (for me) Bream. !st was 29 cms the second 32, both very fat and destined for the pan.

    Finally broken the drought.

    Cheers

  17. 3 darn cms

I went out this evening using chicken offcuts, you know the fatty bits and meat that get cut off a fillet?

Hooked what felt like a real thumper brought him in, very nice bream, got the tape measure out and 22 cms....

    Bugger

Lots of other bites but still getting the timing right so at least i know the chicken works!

    Simon

  18. Thanks Casper

I had had a go around there but not with baits yet so I might try that. Seems the other side of the river does quite well, maybe the water is deeper there, or there is more structure.

    Simon

  19. Hi all

I live on the Georges across the river from Lugarno right next to the Illawong ramp.

I was out a couple of days ago after dusk and there was some god almighty splashes out in the river. Now the mullet were jumping (I think) but there was something else iff not jumping then at least rolling around or something.

I am minded to try my surf rod and some squid on ganged hooks with a decent weight to get out into the channel.

Anyone have any advice or reccomendations?

    Simon

  20. Hi guys
