hey raiders
headed out off sydney today trying to land my first marlin
hit the water early and loaded up on slimies just outside the heads
the water in close was cold and green so we headed wide. we set the spread 20km out and headed east
as we went out more the water got warmer we got 27.5 there wasn't much out in the super hot water other than stripes so we made the descion to head in
eventually the short corner went off at first i didn't think it was a marlin as i had only put this lure out in hope of a dollie it was barely 5" long.
it was a marlin it had taken a spin combo with 60lb braid it put up a great fight with plenty of ariels after about 25 minutes we got a tag in and by 30 minutes i was holding the bill
it was a first for me a black marlin (est 40-50kg) off sydney in my 480 coast runner.

If my memory serves me right the last dolly report from you saw you some 40km on the fish trips, if that's where your fishing then it looks uve missed the point too
Otherwise- please guide us to where these tonnes of dollies can be found ???
they move the other day i headed 40km out didn't get any there and ended up getting 15 over 70cm 11km off sydney it pays to move around if the water temp is up and the water is blue they'll be around just have to locate them on the day.
-
theres heaps out there just gotta move around to find them it's been my best ever season on them

when u catch a tagged fish all u need to do is get the number off the tag and call fisheries. the tag does not need to be removed but you can keep the fish if you want to. people put a lot of time and effort into tagging and releasing fish it would be good to see them being reported as it can reveal some interesting information.

Nice one mate. Good day out. 40ks is a long way out, way past the fads. I'm assuming you new of some structure out there that held them? Not after any spots just curious as to why you went out so far and knew they'd be around there
was fishing some fish traps buoys

What size coast runner??

headed off sydney today chasing dollies
had a mark about 40km out which i was heading for took a good 2 hours to get there in some pretty average conditions
first mark held nothing but near by i found the fish
they were on landed around 20 kept 8 for a feed and tagged and released a few with the biggest around 80cm
they were taking just about everything got them on livies, dead baits, plastics, micro jigs and fly.
the harbour was also holding plenty of kings which we managed on fly and surface stick baits

gday raiders
took the yak out after school today to try something new micro jigging/ slow jigging for jewfish
headed out to my spot on the parra and started experimenting with different techniques as i have never jigged for them
about 5 minutes in i got a solid hit but missed it 2 lifts later i hooked up and had a great fight
i landed a nice little jew measuring 70cm
he took a 35g maria shore ticker jig fished on 14lb leader and a 3-6kg plastics combo
i find the jig great for fishing deep holes when there a lot of wind and current and a plastic just won't hold bottom

great work mate awesome fish hard work pays off!

for 12 and peak i wouldn't only wind up 3 or 4 winds kings don't usually sit that close to the bottom there (depends on the day though) I've caught only 30m down its really important to have a good sounder so u can mark them and put your bait right into them. in close 3 to 4 winds is a good rule but in the deep one day they can be 5m off the bottom and the next they'll be sitting 50m up.
-
i don't like the paternoster rigs they don't allow the live bait enough free room to look natural use a running sinker rig with a trace of about 1.5m to the live bait make sure your sinker is very heavy or you'll never make it down. once on bottom bring the bait up about 10-30m depending on where u can see the kings on the sounder. best baits are live slimy mackerel or yakkas but squid strips work too. id avoid pilchards they're too soft and would break up on the way down. jigging is another affective method.

lately I've been chasing jewfish a lot in sydney harbour
fishing for jews you get a lot of by catch some of which is good and some which are bad (time wasters)
i manage heaps of flatties usually 10+ per sesh with the average around 40cm but there are some bigger models around lately with the biggest being 80cm
heres some pics
I've also been getting a few kings up to 70cm
we get plenty more including bream and the other day i even got a 45cm whiting on a 5" lure

Guys - Fantastic work as usual and good on you fellas for being part of the tagging program! I'm gonna need to grab a couple of marks off you!!!
Just as an FYI - I spoke with the tagging department of the fisheries late last week and they are asking anglers to focus on 75cm+ kings as they have enough data on 65cms. You might want to confirm this with them but just thought you'd like to know to save your tags for the bigger ones!
yeh all the kings i tag have been over 70cm they don't want any under that and also all jews have to be over 60cm

fished this weekend saturday for kings and sunday for jews
headed out early sunday morning with a mate collected some live squid and headed offshore
we got to our spot and i put down a live squid it got hit and it was a very good fish but it busted me off i put down another and hooked up again but got smoked again using 60lb leader
eventually we got into the fish landing about 10 from 65-75 all on live squid and strips i got smoked a couple of times on micro jigs but that was very light gear
i tagged and released most but kept a few for a feed it was a great day with calm weather and plenty of kings
on sunday i headed out chasing jews in the parra river with gianni in his hobie
we hit the water at 6am and got plenty of by catch including a good whiting going 45cm and about 20 flathead up to 60cm
we eventually found a school of jew and gianni hooked up but the fish was dropped at the net. I acted quick dropping my lure straight back down and hooked up instantly and boated a nice jew which was tagged and released
we fished the rest of the arvo but it was hard going with a strong wind we only managed a few more flatties
it was a great weekend with some great fish caught

I set out yesterday of Sydney with the intention of tagging and releasing some kingfish
I set out at 4:30am and started squdding it was hard going only managing 3 squid and 2 cuttle fish
i rounded north head and was hit with a lot of chop and a big swell i pushed thru it and arrived at my first spot and set the down rigger. i got hit first pass but didn't hook up. I set another one down but i came back dead so it got stripped up
I wasn't seeing much or anyone hooking so i moved to another spot
i arrived to my next spot and put one of the cuttles down flipped the bail and i was on it was a great fight and up came a nice kingfish going 71cm i quickly put and tag in a released it
i set down another cuttle and hooked up again this one went 70cm and was also tagged and released
i had one biggish squid left and decided not to send it down whole but strip it up i tried strips but they weren't getting hits neither were jigs
i moved around a bit trying to find them on another spot but didn't find anything
i eventually micro jigged and 45cm trevally and got a few 40cm tailor in a bust up but other than that i didn't manage much
hopefully we can see some good recapture results with the kings
cheers sydneyfisher12

also the bay is closer if the weather turns meaning you can get into safe waters quicker
-
botany heads is closer takes me about half an hour going 20kn from sydney heads so it would be a quicker trip for you
-
i have the exact same problem on my quintrex with the paint some a lot worse than pictured it can be seen taking up large areas around pretty much all the fittings around the boat

Nice work mate!

Hit up the harbour Jews today and did well
My mate arrived to pick me up in his tinny at 9am
We arrived at the first spot and had a drift my mate got a good flounder and I managed a couple of flatties . Next drift I hooked up solid into a Jew and landed my first for the day going 60cm
after that we moved around a bit trying a few other spots eventually I came tight to a good fish it turned out to be a king going 69cm good for the parra river
Not long after I came tight to another fish and Landed another Jew shortly after that my mate landed another king going 67cm
After that my mate had to go so he left me with the tinny so i picked Gianni up and we kept fishing for them I hooked a good fish but dropped it 3m down so we moved
I hooked a good fish it felt a lot better than the other fish it was another Jew and it went 71cm
After that we moved again and Gianni hooked up to a small Jew
And then he landed a better fish going 65cm
Shortly after I hooked a really good fish and brought to the boat a 74cm Jew a new pb
After that it started to get dark and we headed home after a great day

gday raiders
me and gianni hit the harbour sunday in search of jews hoping to get my first
we put the yak in at 5:30am and off we went
the day started slow with not much happening it was very calm and only a few flatties and bream came aboard
we moved spot to spot flicking lures all along the way
around 11am the wind started to pick up and the tide started to run hard so we moved back to the most likely looking spot
after fishing for about 5 minutes i went to take a lift of my lure and felt heavy weight i was on. i slowly worked the fish of the bottom and up came that flash of silver and into the net it went. my first every jew caught on a soft plastic in the harbour. We didn't get an exact measurement but it was around 60cm. The fish was released and swam off strongly
after that fish we didn't manage anything in the same spot so we made a move. The area looked really promising so we persisted and eventually gianni came up to a good fish on the 1-3kg gear after a good fight he landed the second jew for the day also around 60cm
we fished the rest of the day but didn't manage anymore jews.
today i decided to take the boat out and chase some kings
we left at 4:30am and went and collected some livies
we got about 20 yakkas and 2 slimies and headed out
first drop my mate hooked up on a jig but dropped it at the boat
we ended up with 5 kings 78cm-84cm 4 on jigs and 1 on a slimie. it was a super fun session great to get some kings
it was an awesome two days fishing and great to get my first jewie and first on a lure
