  1. Posts that can be grouped:

    Fishing Guides

    Safety, Legality and Etiquette

Posts that seem no longer relevant or don't seem important enough to be pinned:

Just my opinion, but of course what I think is irrelevant may be very useful for someone (though the bag limit ones are definitely out of date)

  2. There are currently 22 stickies, meaning there are only 8 actual posts that are visible on the first page at any time. I understand that these stickies do serve some importance, but is it possible to perhaps reconsolidate them or remove less important ones?

  3. A great post, thank for sharing what was obviously a top day. And a top fish!

The nippers do get big in the more remote parts, personally I like the medium sized ones.

Fishing in the Port should be A1 at present, especially if you can get away from the noisy marine rats with rooster tails (you know whar I mean)

    Cheers

Thankfully with the wind being as high as it was, and the fact that it was Christmas eve meant that we were (for the most part) alone on the water. In general though, I do know what you mean but it's still better than being in the George's.

True about the size, these ones were really too big for the size of hook but I wasn't able to find any smaller ones :/

  4. Every time I've tried to troll with a bibbed lure, they end up coming to the surface because the hooks have gotten caught on the line or something else. Is there a way to prevent this?

  5. So after a few unsuccessful trips to the harbour, and having my motor crap itself right in-front of a sail boat, I've decided to head back into the hacking. Calmer waters greeted me today, despite the heavy winds. Started off just trying to find anywhere to hide behind, and worked the way up from NW arm to lilli pilli baths catching nothing but tiny snapper. Eventually, the tide dropped really low and went to get some nippers. With the tide being as low as it was, I felt like I was gathering yabbies from untouched places. Huge yabbies, hanging around the 10cm mark, and plenty of them. Pumped a few into the bucket, then anchored in the flats. First throw out, dad's on. It gets close to the boat, looks like a decent sized trevally, but dad let it wrap itself around the engine and it cut him off. This was his first time fishing with 4lb, so I didn't hear the end about that one.

Then it's just fish after fish.

First a flattie. Didn't get a measurement or photo, but I'd say it was getting close to the 60cm.

    Then a bream at 30cm.

Then dad got cut off by another flattie (more yells about the 4lb).

    Then a Tailor.

Then a trevally, though smaller than the one first lost.

Then I got taken by something big. It took lots of line, and then jumped to the surface so my first thought was Salmon. But then it jumped again, and I noticed it had an eel like body, long and slender. Then it came closer to the boat and it had a really long snout, but I was stupid and held the rod too high up, and it cut me off :(

Then, on my last yabbie, I pull in a monster of a whiting. Just what I'd been looking for all day. It's a bit curved in the photo, but I measured it as 38cm on the boat.

By the time we were finishing up, the wind had died down and it was glassy in the hacking.

    Forgot how beautiful it was.

  6. Hi all,

In the market for a new reel, and while browsing the Shimano site, I noticed that they had their spinning reels split up into "Spinning" and "Saltwater Spinning".

Does anybody know if the "Saltwater Spinning" range are inherently more resistant to salt water, of it's simply because they're designed for bigger fish?

Was looking at the Sedona and Sahara combos, with Sedona being in the "Spinning" section (and sahara apparently discontinued?). With the Symetre and the Saros being on the lowest end of the "Saltwater Spinning".

As someone who fishes exclusively in salt water, it'd be great if these higher end reels are actually just more resilient against the salt.

    Cheers,

    Mark

  7. I thought Jet skis were bad until I started fishing the harbour. Then I constantly had people in sail boats constantly get within 3 meters of the back of the boat, many times picking up my lines with them.

Got until the 4th off, so hopefully there'll be some clear days in there.

  8. Good to see you got your first salmon. There are alot turning up with tailor mixed in.

Look for the seagulls working the surface.

That is one of the wedding cakes , any of the large marker will hold kings from time to time.

I think your Ray is a Banjo Shark

Thanks for the ID. I generally try to look for surface action, but the couple of times I have spotted it, I've never managed to hook anything up. This one seemed to be deep (or on its own) as there was no action up top. Will have to try the markers again over the next couple of months.

    Welcome to the Harbour!

I think Ryder is spot on. Thats a banjo shark.

The Wedding Cakes are on the Eastern and Western channel so it looks like you have the western one which is generally the better mark but the ferries make it difficult to fish at times.

Again, the advice from Ryder is on the "mark" and moving from one mark to another is a good strategy... although I have had a lot of trouble finding them this last few weeks?

If its anything like last year they will be hanging around all the markers is numbers.

Looks like you already know that that was a late start and early mornings are generally the most productive.

    Cheers

    Jim

Thanks, I think I'm going to be fishing here more often. Even if I don't catch anything, the views are still totally worth it.

Generally if I'm on my own I get out much earlier and move around more but it's always late and static when I'm out with the old.

The other thing that didn't help was that I was using pillies, but I'm sure I'll figure out where to go for bait in the harbour quick enough.

  9. Since getting my boat at the start of the year, I've only been in the Georges and the hacking. Finally went to the Harbour today, launching from Northbridge. VERY late start at 12pm, but this was more of an exploration trip than anything.

Went around towards what I believe is wedding cake(see photo) ? There were two that I saw and went to the north one. Threw out an unweighted whole pillie on ganged 4/0 live bait hooks. Nothing touched it for an hour, then for one of the handful of times in my life, I hear that delightful zzzzzzzzzzzz. I immediately see it jump into the air. After fighting for a bit, pulled it on board and it was a 50cm Sambo. Super exciting as it's the first one I've ever caught. Other than that, it was mostly undersized snapper, a couple of little trevally and a stray Whiting. And this one looking ray.

All in all a way better day than any I've had in Botany in recent memory. Now just to find squid and start my hunt for a kingie.

  10. Nice work man.

I was in botany today and there was a bust up happening in front of me for a while. Dad had 2 live yakkas out (one weighted and one unweighted) and I tired throwing a chrome and a couple of divers at them with no luck.

The guys next to me were using poppers and managed to get 2 hook-ups, but didn't bring either to the surface.

I'll have to give the plastics a go next time, any info on what you're using?

  11. I ended up buying an Ally Craft 475 Bow Rider. I figured it's a nice compromise between the bayliner bow riders and a good cuddy, while being more enjoyable for the family to get on.

Relative to the 395 Dart that I just sold, it's a beast. Much higher sides, wider beam and heavier.

All that's left to do is add a fish finder. It's got a tab at the back to place the transducer, but I'm not sure on how to run the wiring. I'm looking at the Elite-4X and that has quite a fat plug :/
