  1. Methinks there may be some hidden agendas at play here!

    Cheers,

    Bruce

if they wanna sink it somewhere for us fisho's to use im sure we wont care what the ship holds as long as the fishing is good

  2. Thanks Boofhead.

    Some advice please:

I also tackled the job last weekend, but on one side, when I removed the hub, the inner bearing disintegrated and fell out in pieces, and the inside half of the bearing is stuck fast to the axle. I tried to move it with hammer & chisel but it didn't move. Next used grinder to cut it at slight angle from perpendicular to axle, and tried again, this time only chipped a few pieces from the inner edge. Any advice how to remove the bloody thing?

Spoke to mechanic down the road today & he said to keep grinding & use hammer & chisel until it splits open.

Safety wise - I learned the hard way to wear safety glasses! When I hit bearing from behind the first time to try & knock it out, some bits flew out & hit me on chin & caused bleeding straight away - it cut badly. Luckily it didn't hit the eye, I still get chill down the spine thinking about it.

just grind down the inner race that is stuck on the axle, dont go overboard, a little at a time. dont try to cut it to the shaft otherwise you will end up citting into the axle. Just hold the grinder horizontal and grind down from the top. Try periodically with a hammer and cold chisel until it cracks. Sometimes a little bit of heat can help too

  3. nice work on the tutorial, For the sake of a few extra dollars i would suggest buying a set of jackstands to support the trailer whilst doing any work where part of your body is under it. The wheel being placed under the trailer will help, but better to not allow the trailer to fall off the jack at all in the first place.

  4. Hey Dangles

    Well said

Mind you really didn't need saying.

Shame they aren't going to torpedo it like the one in West Aust a while back.

It would give Ray R one "blast" of a day.

He wouldn't need to fish that day just stand on his spot put his arms out and catch the fish as they rained down. :biggrin2::biggrin2:

His famed photo's could have been called "Raining fish" Part 2.

I'd love to go into the benifits of doing it with a tactical nuke but I will refrain at present.

    Cheers Guys

    Trapper Tom

wouldve loved to have seen some fighter jet training on it. But im sure the explosion will still be good to watch. A mate that works for Maritime is working that day as rapid response on a jetski to patrol the exclusion zone. Front row seats for him

  5. What i would like to know is where can I dump over 20 ton of old paint and anity fowling that only the navy can use on there boats ,this stuff should be removed befor the sinking ,there is also ment to be asbestos in between the shetes of steel shrounding the engine aera ,it was used for noise and heat insulaition ,so as it rots apart you will be swiming in water that has some very dangerous particals floating in it .So who is going to eat fish out of the Avoca area ,simple way to fix this mess is to creat a nother marrine park that takes in an area of 10 k of shore line so we cant catch these fish and eat them.

They closed sydney harbour due to dixions in the water and fish .the most commom way dixions ocure is from fresh water run of after a large bush fire or the use of high temperture inceraters THE FALL OUT ,

    Ship cleaning and preparation

How the Ship has been prepared…

A significant amount of work is required to prepare the Ex-HMAS ADELAIDE for the scuttling and for its future life as a dive site. Work includes the stripping and cleaning of the ship as well as the creation and implementation of a dive design .

McMahon Services Australia were awarded the contract to prepare the Ex-HMAS ADELAIDE in June 2009 for an amount of $5 million. The vast majority of the cost of the work is centred on the cleaning and preparation of the vessel to ensure it will have no impact on the surrounding environment. Since this time they have been working closely with the Land and Property Management Authority, the federal Department of Environment Water Heritage and The Arts and various stakeholder groups to complete the work at the Sydney port Corporation Berth No. 2 at White Bay/Glebe Island.

All work to prepare the ship for use as an artificial reef and dive site is undertaken strictly in accordance with the relevant guidelines and stringent standards required under the Environment Protection (Sea Dumping) Act 1981. This legislation is administered by the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) who undertake regular inspections of the ship. DEWHA have also engaged an independent inspector to provide a review of the process.

Prior to the NSW government accepting the ship in June 2009, initial preparation works were undertaken at the Royal Australian Navys Fleet Base East in Sydney (Garden Island Dockyard). This included flushing lines to clear fuel and oils and stripping items that could be reused as operational spares for the remaining Adelaide class ships in the Navy's fleet including the missile launch unit, weaponry, electronic components and engines. Memorabilia and other historical items were also removed for future use by the Navy, RSL clubs, museums and the like.

Final preparation of the ship has included the following activities:

•Removal of all fuels, oils and greases (hydrocarbons); removal of other hazardous materials including heavy metals, batteries, asbestos, PCBs, and paints containing heavy metals and other marine-hazardous material.

•Removal of part of the main mast so that it is at a minimum depth of 6m below lowest astronomical tide and hence does not pose a navigation hazard.

•Making the ship safe as a dive site by removing all machinery, cabling, insulation, non-structural partitions, hatches/ doors, floatable material, access ladders and other items that could create a diver hazard, entanglement or risk, and all objects that could break loose during the scuttling process or over time and block access ways or compartments.

•Undertaking ship modifications to produce a safe and interesting dive site including cutting diver access holes into the sides of the hull; cutting holes in the floors and ceiling to allow extra vertical access between decks; cutting openings to allow light to penetrate; and sealing off areas where diver access should not be permitted for safety reasons.

•Cutting further holes for air to escape during scuttling and ballasting the ship so it sinks in an upright position.

Work that will now be completed includes:

•Making towing arrangements and towing the ship to waters of Avoca Beach.

•Placement of explosive charges to blow further holes in the ship below the waterline to flood the hull and sink the vessel.

•Whilst on site removing ladders and work equipment and making last minute preparations to scuttle the ship.

    •Scuttling the ship.

•Post-scuttling inspection to confirm the safety and stability of the ship on the seabed and to retrieve debris.

•Installation of navigation buoys to mark the location of the ship

  6. I need to replace my leaf springs before they break in half from corrosion. It is a small trailer for 3 - 4 metre tinnie, I haven't done it before, but had a look and it doesn't look that hard. Has anyone got any suggestions re where to get replacement springs from and whether it is straight forward. thanks spence

any boating chandlery should have em.jack the trailer up and remove wheels, u will need to support trailer on the rails themselves. just unbolt the u bolts holding the axle on, then the bolts holding springs to trailer. Reverse it to put back together. Probably pay to replace the u bolts whilst replacing the springs

  7. Hey buddy, we got booked for exactly the same reason a couple months back. Check previous posts. As SOON as your in open waters you require the necessary offshore gear,, epirb, radio, charts, flares, V-sheet. Check maritimes website, as for us it cost us $250 and we were sitting just off The Gap. Its not worth worth it, maritime are cracking down and so they should, too many people dont know the correct laws, we didnt. But such is life.

    Dan

Not disputing the open water requirements just the epirb.

A 406MHz EPIRB or Emergency Position

Indicating Radio Beacon is a simple and effective

alerting and locating device that is complusory

for all vessels operating more than 2 nautical

miles from the shore. The EPIRB should be accessible but stowed to

avoid inadvertent activation. Do not stow the

EPIRB in the bottom of a locker

so as long as u have the rest u can safely be within 2 nm of the coast and not need an epirb

  8. Seconds can only go up to 59.99. Once you have gone past this you have gone to the next minute.

t dog the gps co-ords u have are degrees, minutes, decimal minutes i think. pretty much .500 would be 30 secs i think so .750 would be 45 secs and .250 would be 15 secs

  9. i thought the epirb limit was 2nm Offshore so if u are fishing within that off the coast there would be no need for an epirb???

not sure if thats my interpretation or not. ie if u launch at longreef boat ramp u are instantly in open waters but dont need an epirb till u are 2nm off the coast??

  10. Thanks guys.... sorry Slayer not revealing the spot... took my years to work out how to catch Squid...

How long do they last for once frozen before they are no longer good for fresh bait?

i think slayer was hinting at a general area not the exact spot. As for length of time depends on alot of things had some last 3 weeks till it started going pink then ive had some for 5 mths in the freezer and still looks like the day i put it in

  11. I would say 200 - 300 should be fine. But i dont think really anything will rip 150+ metres of line let a lone spool you.

    Cheers, Zac

never had a king spool me, however be prepared to lose metres of line when they reef u whenever possible

  12. hey guys,

was just wondering what sort of pump system i would need to make a live bait tank, and where i would be able to buy it from???

    Thx

a decent size bilge pump and a water pickup is what you will need, the pickup will work whilst underway. when stopped just switch the pump on

  13. Any one have any tips for catching blue swimmers? i would like to try this season but not sure where to exactly start. Any help would be appreciated!

    what bait for traps?

how long should i leave them in before checking them?

what's every ones preferred amount of traps to use?

i fish the harbour and botany bay any spots would be appreciated!

    thanks in advance

there is a limit on number of traps/nets per person check the dpi fisheries site to get the latest on how many u can use. Pretty sure its 1 trap or a few witches hats

  14. I sent you a PM with link to the list of NSW ANSA clubs, or you can google ANSA and find the national site.

A good local tackle shop, e.g. the one on Woodville Rd near Villawood should be able to point you in the right direction, too.

    Cheers,

    Baz

most leagues/rsl clubs have a fishing club too try contacting them to help in ur search

  15. Time to buy a Lotto ticket I think, Roberta. Glad you picked it up.

    Cheers, Slinky

Lucky break to pick up on that, i have software to recover off ntfs and fat32 drives. As long as data hasnt been written back over the top of the deleted file it can be recovered. Even if a drive has been quick formatted you should still be able to. In the case of a failed drive, as long as it powers up still most of the drive is still recoverable.

Software i use is called Get data back

  16. could be the breather in the tank isnt big enough or the pickup is sucking onto the bottom/side of the tank. i have an older tank that my 50hp runs fine off, bought a new tank and it starves for fuel like you are saying. Still investigating with the new tank as to the cause of the problem

  17. Top fish there mate, a real cracker for the nepean. Without giving your spot away was it around Penrith? They're doing an upgrade to the fish ladder at Penrith weir and I thought it might be impossible for them to get further than that

tommy not all the fish will go downstream to spawn, you will get big bass that stay their ground year round.

NOTE: there are no fishing signs around the weir approx 50m upstream and 100m downstream

  18. greg apparently there is one on old windsor rd mcgraths hill behind blue haven pools. Might get a chance to get there 1 day. Used to race as a youngster think i was 7 at the time (womps/flexi's gp12)

    greg check your pm's
