  1. Top effort RUNAMUK ,

Makos that size are few and far between ,

Very lucky capture for the reason you may have weighed the all time record on 15kg Mako for your club if they bring the ban on them in next month .

What a shame us sharkers take so little form the sea but get punished so hard

In Easter 2008 sydney game tournament , We weighed a 407kg on 15kg after 4.5hrs

love makos best shark should be rated so different to other sharks points wise in my opinion

  2. hey mate

I brought a 6500 expedition last year and was looking for a rod for the same kind of application as you mentioned .

i looked for ages i looked at the smiths ,jigmaster , carpenter i ended up buying a rod that has blown me away , it is perfect for what i want it for . i must add not cheap either

I brought a Saltiga SPARTAN rod they are a limited edition rod which just feels so easy on the body but so ballsy when u need it .

I am so happy with it , Now all i have to do is bend it on a fish

    regards Mark

  3. Nice mako ,

I would assume it would have went 300 kgs

In 2006 we weighted a 407kg mako in the Sydney GFC Easter weekend tournament .

Shame to see this new ban come in on these great game fish !

Great effort , And well done for the tag and release effeort .

    Hi Guys,

Since I put a late post for an extra pair of hands, I thought I'd put this report in! You missed nothing J !!!!!!!

Fished out of the Hacking and started a drift in 380m. Early, the drift was good at 0.6knts and then gradually picked up as we entered another current line! Water temp was 21.8 and the colour was blue as! No albies up here unlike that of the south coast, hence the signs of yellowfin as reported last week.

Raise a good mako at 2.00pm................ the float went down, then back up, then sideways for 10m, then down again and then the rigger popped. Left him for 45 secs or so and set the hook straight back into the head of the stripey. :1badmood: Don't ya hate that? The wind was up to about 18-20 knts from the NE with 1.0 - 1.5m swell. Heaps of white caps, but this boat seems to drift well in those sorts of conditions so we stayed out til 6.15pm hoping for a late bite, before making the 38km run home at 21knts.

So much for sydney................. and an end to the shark season for us! Next week, back down to Kiama for a Marlin / Tuna fish!

ps. I'd thought I would add a pic of a fish we caught last year. Mako.............. how much do you think he weighs?? mmmmmmmmm

  4. Hi Mark, we have done it on many boats over the years and works well. When I had an electric winch on my trailer I had the battery and box on the trailer frame and would run on trickle charge overnight. Only issue is theft and you need to make sure the battery is secured well. You can get quick relase bolt sets for the winch to allow that to be removed and maybe just as easy to remove the battery and put in the car as well when out using the boat.

    Cheers,

    Huey.

Thanks Huey , I thought of having one made up in either stainless steel or aluiminum , What would be the best to go onto the drawer bar of a gal trailer ? and also how was yours fixed with the standard u bolts that you see attached to winch posts ? This could work if you have the nuts in the box to prevent theft . The box must be lockable also .

    Regards Mark

  5. Hi All , I have have a mate that has and electric winch on his boat trailer for draging his 6MTR boat up . His setup is quiet smart but has a catch ! He has a wire that runs from the battery to the back of the 4WD with a plug that is next to the flat 7 pin . Then a plug that goes from the winch to the 4WD which plugs in and gives the winch life . Works well for him doing alot of fishing and family outings with wife ! No stress on him or her . But here is the catch ! This setup means he can only tow/Lauch his boat off his 4WD which is bad in a way . My suggestion was to fit a battery box to the trailer which could be hard wired to the winch and then the boat can be launched of any vechile . The battery would have to be charged after most outings i would imagine and obviuosly in a lockable S/S or Aluiminuim box mounted on the drawer bar.

Has anyone or does anyone have this setup ? Or have seen or used this setup ? if so please shed some light on this for me , Good idea or bad ?

Look forward to hearing peoples 2 CENTS

    Cheers Mark

  6. Yeah we are looking at heading out sunday just so we can get a heads up on hows Sat goes . I think both days are looking the goods weather wise .

Hopefully the current isnt raging to fast allowing for easy bottom bashing and avoiding the snags .

Based on toadys weather id say the pros would be giving the bottom a clean up .

  7. Thanks for your input fellas ,

I did set a budget of around $700

Based on GregLs personal advise and experience . I guess the option is simple i need an " allrouder " rod .

So Saltiga it is . Unless you can get something better for that money which i dont believe you can ?

I was thinking of using the Daiwa 90pound coloured Braid . Any other sugestions would be great .

    Cheers

  8. Theres a bit of difference between toasters and saltigas !

I was looking at spending arond the $700 mark so i guess cos i want it for mutiple uses and on such different fishing techniques , I would say based on Gregs comments and experiences ill probably go with the Saltiga Rod as a "good allrounder"

Unless $700 will get me something better ?

I guess problem solved . Untill i get to the tackle shop !

  9. Thanks for your input fellas !

I kind of had a smith in mind , But i also heard that they wouldnt exactly suit all the things i wanted to use it for .

Ill definatley look into those options .

    Cheers

  10. Hi People , Here it goes !!!!

I have a Saltiga 6500 Expedition i want to match a rod to , and dont know what to choose for the application .

I want to use it for Trolling , Down rigging ( over kill I know ), jigging , and cubeing for fin .

So what rod would you guys buy if in my position ?

If anyone has the same reel and uses it for the same applications some advice or experience would be great !

This has been doing my head in since i brought the reel early this year .

look forward to your feed back .

    Regards

  11. Hi everyone this is my first post great site been siting back and looking for a while

has any one heard of any kingfish being caught at Eden within the last couple of weeks

    thanks scott

    Hi There Mate ,

Are you the Scott Thornton who operates" Freedom " the charter boat ?

    Cheers

  12. Hi All ,

I was wondering why this has gone under the radar this week or have i missed it ?

I have been helping a mate gather bait everynight this week for the comp and was thinking that if he is only one of hundreds of entries , LOOK OUT JEWS !!!! There are contracts on your heads !!!!!

Keen to hear everyones 2 cents

    Cheers

  13. Crew of More Charisma, who fished the comp got one mako on saturday and left at 12.30 on Sunday.

Also confirmed that these guys know there fish and are excellent at what they do!

The sight of such a fish is precious and would be quite overwhelming. We had had only one white (which ended up being hooked), but our estimates were about 14-15 feet with a weight of ???????, but it eat a bait being wound in took off and peeled 250-300m on 24 at sunset before straightening the hook!I will try and find a pic of the 14/0 sea master and post.

I can't start to imagine what that thing would have been like. WOW!

    dale, reel magic

I dont mean to be rude but why were you fishing with 24KG line when i was a 15KG Line classs comp ?

  14. thanks for your input guys .

warnie & crazedfisherdude I love the idea of pipe fantastic . the other day tough they were diving way more than 2.4 mtrs though .

i could i theory have the pipe as long as need i guess . the only temporary solution was we tield up a mince block in a keepers net about 30 ft from the back of the boat which kept them away for a while . as it defrosted they still attacked it .

Frank p We were fishing on saturday at boultons

    Damm birds

  15. Hi guys , me and a mate of mine decided to head out and chase some snapper after seing some of the quality fish that were caught last week , how could you not want a part of the action .

Anyway the conditions were perfect a nice N/W turning N/E later and a north - south current was perfect for fishing down a trail and the perfect amount of run , great fresh baits everything was as per plan . It was one of those days were you expected the fish instead of hopeing .

Cut a long story short we started fishing and getting a trail going when as of a sudden about 20 muttons started landing near us and swiming up towards the back of the boat and chasing every single bit of berly every cube every bait every thing that hit the water they were after it . and diving up to around 20 feet to get it .

We could NOT get a bait down or establish a consistent trail we would have to trow a hand full of cubes to the left and drop a bait next to the side wall of the boat and hope that it sunk deep enough before they spotted it .

It was a living night mare we had to battle against them non stop !!

anyway we ended up with 6 snapper when we got our baits down up to 2.5 kg which still isnt bad and they tasted great on the bbq last night so i guess it wasnt that bad in the end

Does anyone else ever have this problem ? and if so how do they avoid it ??

    Please help

    Regards Mark

  16. Well done on the fin mate

Did you get to weigh the fish at all ?

What size rod did you get it on ? 15kg,24kg,37kg

i have also experienced lossing good fin on bibless minnows we lost ours at the side of the boat which made

it worst , it was estimated from 2 experieced game fishos at 50kg plus

anyway thats what keeps you going for them
