  1. Something i found earlier about stainless hooks..... have a read!

A FEDERAL Government conservation organisation is asking fishermen to stop using stainless steel fishhooks, saying they are cruel.

They also say the hooks cause unnecessary loss of marine life.

Stainless steel hooks become a problem when fish break away from the line, leaving the hook stuck in their mouth. The hooks do not rust and often cause the fish to starve to death.

Coastcare, a National Heritage Trust-funded group, wants corrodible hooks to be the ones always used by anglers.

Such hooks would rust, hopefully quickly enough for the animal to survive.

Spokesman Brian Scarsbrick said yesterday that snagged animals such as sharks, dolphins and turtles often could not eat because of old hooks and many eventually starved or, in weakened condition, fell victim to predators.

Many commercial and recreational fishermen were embracing marine conservation and this was another logical step, he said.

Sunfish North Moreton branch secretary Bill Turner said stainless steel had been introduced about 30 years ago in an effort to stop hooks rusting in the tackle box.

"Stainless steel hooks hold their point better, but I gave up using them years ago," Mr Turner said.

"I personally don't see any advantage in them."

He called on all members to abandon stainless steel.

"Our annual general meeting is coming up this month, and I'm willing to make a recommendation for Sunfish to adopt this as policy," he said.

Mr Turner said stainless steel lasted for an indefinite period and anglers should do anything that would help species survive better.

Ron Hunter, owner of Dive Forster in northern NSW, said stainless steel was a major problem, especially in sharks.

"Up to 50 per cent of all sharks observed have some form of attachments in their mouths," Mr Hunter said.

"An ordinary steel hook will rust away and cause less problems than a stainless steel hook, which can stay in place for up to two years, in which time the shark will often die."

It was unclear how long different types of hooks took to rust, but it was thought smaller steel hooks took about six months.

  2. Good onya mate, a bit of thought and caring goes a long way, even though they are not a take home fish for the family, they still have there place in the system. Another good fishing citizen.. Cheers.. P.S where is Molli Point...

Molineaux point - Where the long break wall at Yarra Bay meets the container wall.

  3. Raider of the week mate.... good on you for doing the right thing. I guess some people are worried that they've hooked a shark so don't try to retrieve the hooks... others just get busted off. But I bet there are still a lot of fishos out there who are too lazy or thoughtless to dehook them. :1badmood:

Just gives us all a bad name.

Were the hooks in its gob stainless?

    Cheers, Slinky

    Slinky,

Even though they are a poor by-catch their skin patterns make them nice enough for a pic.

You know, I pulled out half a dozen hooks and 3 were stainless. That's not right at all. I would say those anglers aren't scared of removing hooks they just don't care.

You're right it does give everyone a bad name and not to mention the damage done to the stocks.

  4. g'day raiders am taking my bro-inlaw out for some reds on saturday out of botany bay. anyone have any ideas on where they are at the moment?

i was thinking the lighthouse south of kurnell, what do the raiders think?

im fishing out of a 5.2 formosa so not too far out would be good.

Ahh boys, your theories are pretty  but very funny.

    the milk one is :074::074::074:

I am of Greek origin and we have octopus coming out of our ears.... these species are definately edible and bloody good too if you don't want them i'll take them. We snorkel for them all up and down the coast of this counrty.

A good secret for you. Now this is a golden secret, one passed on through generations.

    1. catch it

    2. turn the head inside out and feed other fish with all the gut (the food chain is very important) it may still crawl around for an hour or so so keep it secure.

    3. first chance you get to land a nice flat rock belt the occy against the rock about (no joke) 100 times. obviously the bigger the occy the more your belting it.

    4. once the belting is over and your biceps are full rub it into the rock to create a white foam (this too may take a while. the beak will pop out on it own at this time, if not just pop it out with your thumb.

    5. by this time you will notice that the firmness has been lost and the occy has lost most of its colour and slime so you've almost finished now. colour turns to a pale light brown almost white

    6. the last test to see if your hard work has been done is to try and tear the webbing between each of its 8 legs. tearing the webbing by holding two legs (one in each hand) will tell you that the tenderising process has been successful. But remember tear the webbing a little don't tear it off.

my grandparents would be turning in their graves for telling you all this.

    i hope it helps.

  6. Hi,

I'm new on Fishraider and I live around Kingsford in Sydney, and wondering are there any good fishing spots around Eastern suburbs. :1fishing1:

    Hi K. Wong,

I also live in kingsford and do some landbased fishing more for squid. But i'd be more than happy to show you some quality fishing spots. PM me and we'll arrange something.

  7. Great catch boys. Guess theres some still out there. Ill be out there the caming saturday, Hopefully the trip won't be cancelled again :ranting2:

    Cheers Lala

yes 4 weeks and 4 cancelled trips later we finally managed to get out there. It was well worth the wait.

  8. Hey

I was just wondering if any one knows were to get slimys in botany bay.

I get mine from yarra bay along the rock wall. berley is a must. i first start the burley trail (pilly with tuna oil) and use a small piece of pilly as my first bait. once i have a few slimeys i fillet a slimey and use that as bait. i find that to be good as the bait will hold for longer and once they chew the flesh off. the skin will even catch them.

  9. Hi raiders,

I'm looking into a YFT session to browns or other spots on a charter and wanted some of your advice on which charter you guys would recommend.

We're a team of about 5 die hard fishos and want hard action not just a cruisy day.

We're sydney based so anything from the bay to the harbour pick up is perfect

  10. Hi Guys ,

Just got a towbar fitted to my RAV and when I got home and went to hook the trailer up I found the towball is so low I cant actually wind the jockey wheel up far enough to get the ball and socket to engage.

The only way was for me to lift the front of the trailer by hand and then get the wifey to swing the jockey wheel out of the way. Once on, the bottom of the trailer at the front seems very low.

Anyone else had this problem and if so any remedy.

The ball can't go any higher or the tailgate won't open.

    Thanks guys

i had this problem with my jeep. what i did was bought a new tongue with a greater angle in the curve, turned it upside and turned the ball to the top of the tonge. lift the ball to higher ground. i also removed the spare so i could get my hands in to hook the trailer to the ball. it is a pain as you lose your spare but at least you get the boat out.

  11. finished work at 3 and decided to go and fish the harbour.

launched the boat at roseville and was at balmoral looking for yakas by 4 (gotta love that). had to work hard for the yakkas only managing 2 in 30 mins.

so headed to a channel marker that ive seen kings around before, sent one livey down and started throwing some unweighted strip baits at the marker and into a kingy of around 45cms.

hang around the marker for an hour and only see one more fish. decide to call it quits and back to roseville by 630.

if any one has any tips on catching regular kingys they would be much appreciated as i have only managed 3 throw backs all summer.

    cheers.

    hi mark,

the smaller the yakka the better, and drop it down - all the way down... that's my advice.

  12. Your bro in law (blue shirt - or is that you ?) looks like he is having a lot of fun in the 2nd pic.

Was that fighting the king ?

no that's me in the yellow, i was quick to get the pics of him but the bastard didn't have the brains to get a shot of me fighting the king.

he took the jew first and soon after i took the king.

  13. That's a great result for a quick session.

    Well done boys!

Which put up the best fight, the jew or the king?

    Cheers

    Peter

the king never gave up, but the jew took off like a rocket but gave up very quickly.

  15. well i copped a nice 74cm number on my larger outfit. it ended up taking me round the anchor rope twice then snapped my rod tip- luckily it didnt lose the hook-up so boated the fish at 74cm. but what a pain in the ass, kind of my fault as i didn't give it much room to play but i didn't want him around that anchor rope again.
