  1. from memory yes, but the worst part is the descent, the river drops a long way, I don't think it's all that passable from up high.

On the map it shows a Morong Falls fire trail that leads off Kanagra Walls road, this trail heads down towards the river.

Has anyone been down this fire trail?

Looks like a 350 meter walk from the end of the fire trail.

    cheers

  2. you can't fish the firetrail area because it's above the falls/junction with morong. You have to hike down from near jenolean caves (I'm sure there's other ways, like the road to yerranderie). I'll PM you with more info.

    Thanks Covanova.

are the falls a long way down from the crossing

I have just ordered some topo maps to look into it further

    cheers

  3. What have you heard about the false spawners? I wouldn't bother, they are frustrating and near impossible to catch (in my experience of course) You used to be able to see them when the lake was higher, pairing off and trying to build a redd but with the low lake levels I dunno if there are any gravel beds worth looking at?

I remember spending a whole afternoon a few years ago casting at paired Browns without even a look, very annoying.

But, if you wanna try the general rule to Trout spawning times are:

Browns, early to mid winter and Rainbows late winter. Rain and snow (or lack of) are the main things that change this. Fresh rain and snow will trigger the fish to move into rivers but in TCD that means just a bunch of frustrated fish.

Personally I think you are better of concentrating on pre-spawn Rainbows now (they are really on the go in the Snowies). They like to hang around the spawning fish looking for roe to eat, maybe some orange plastics perhaps?

    Cheers

    Windy

    Your right Matt

I hear about the good old days when the water was high, I also hear of packs of cruiser that can be spotted from up high.

the snowies would be nice however the price of gas is a major deterant these days not to mention the time to get down and back for a quick flick.

    cheers Jamie

  4. I been hearing a lot about the false spawners at TCD and how I goota get some of the action.

The only problem no one seems to know when the right time and conditions are to go have a flick.

I have been to TCD about 8 times now and have scored zip.

    Any insight fellow petrol burners.

    cheers

  5. We went up to TCD and go there at sun up.

the 3 of us battled the westerly and fished our way around to the quarry and back again.

zip, duck egg and nada was caught

we saw a couple of blokes on the other side that caught a smally and they made their way around past us and down towards the wall were they pulled out another better fish.

    Us there stil nothing.

Highlight of the trip was watching a massive eagle hovering above the water for about 20 mins and then diving down a pulling what looked to be 50+ brown out of the water (smart arse).

then it was off to Lyell (should have gone straight home) another 2 hours of wind and no fish.

A couple of blokes went past in a boat and we asked them how they went, between 4 blokes they had 2 fish all day.

It was then time to hit the highway.

    Maybe next time.

Hey Stanno what RFS branch are you mates from?

  6. Hi all,

Has anyone been up to TCD in the last week or so and had any luck?

If so what methods were used.

Thinking about tracking up there on Sat for a day of fun/torture.

    Any info would be great.

    Cheers

  7. Now the season is closed where can I go for some more river fishing around central tablelands.

I know the Wollondilly is open but I think some areas of the Kowmung is open but it's not clear where abouts along with parts of the cox's, the 6 foot track may be above my health level.

    can anyone help out here.

    cheers

  8. Hey Jamie, yep thats the one. It's the road thats comes off the one that leads to the Damn Wall (coming from Lithgow), about half way between Lithgow and the Dam.

Wish I could go, but good 'ol work wont let me!

    Cheers

    Windy

    Bloody work

When you get to the bottom of the road the leads to the water where do you head from there.

I saw some pics you guys posted a while ago on Farmers and the water looked small and shallow like a feeder stream.

Is that an area you walk to once you get down to the water

when I was there it all looked like big deep dam water although the water went around to the right and out of site.

    Any tips

    cheers Matt

  9. Don't want to spoil your trip Cam, but the season closes this weekend so the Thredbo is off limits.

    Cheers

    Windy

    Hey boys

We are heading up the Fish River for 5 days on Thursday night camping at the F R reserve

Hope we will get some speckleis

With all this rain I am expecting the waters will be higher and faster than usual

if the river is to hard to fish might head out to Lyell and or TCD for a flick

How do you get to Farmers creek, is it at the end of the road with the white steel gate, do you walk from there.

If anyone is crusing past drop in a say hello.

    cheers Jamie

  10. how much many do you not want to spend?

I was like you and bought a cheapy of ebay and that was just the start of it all.

I know have 4 rods, 4 reels, a million flies, waders, boots and spend every other weekend out west chasing trout that I hardly ever catch.

    And love it

For bass fishing I would think a 4 or 5 weight rod at 8-8'6 foot long should be OK, this size rod could be used for trout as well as bream, flathead, whiting etc.

I have seen gillies combos in BCF for around $160. that looked OK.

Make sure you rod is a medium action rod not a slow action rod.

    Just my opinion

    good luck

  11. thanks guys for your help

Wavedancers are great me and the mrs bought one each

I have a finder on mine along with anchor, nav lights, paddle hold, lure retriever and 3 rod holders.

If you ring wild water psorts in Putney and speak with Jen she can arrange a demo paddle.

they were great to deal with.

    cheers

    Jamie

  12. I know it's probably cheating but I have used a size 14 hook and half a camo sand worm on my 5 weight Loomis and caught flathead, bream and whiting on the flats near my place.

    Hey it worked.

I have had days in the same spot flicking baited breaths, clousers, charlies etc and caught zip.

    cheers

  13. all our wifes are great

mine loves fishing and camping, drinking beer and brewing her own she just sold her 748 Ducati late last year and has just bought a kayak to fishing in.

we where up that way on the weekend at Tarana and caught plenty although it wasn't snowing and the fish were not that big.

we managed 2 browns at around the 54 cm mark but all the other (and there were a few) were around the 25 cm mark and mainly rainbows

    cheers

  14. Thanks guys

Hodgey: Yeah, I have never picked up a Trout when dead sticking the plastic on the bottom. But I had a few touches that day whilst the Squidgie was motionless. All though I have got quite a few Trout now on plastic I still don't have that confidence to use them that regularly. Most of my spinning is with light minnows (Berkley Frenzys, SX-40s, Cultivas etc), Vibraxs (my fav) and sometimes Maniac Spoons. Most of those got a run first up as well as some deeper divers. Also tried a River 2 Sea Vibe down deep but I didnt use it for long, might have done ok if I persisted with it?

Roffo: Was a good day mate, glad you got some packs of the good stuff  I did some looking on Sunday and cant fiind anymore at all the locals!

Yes Dear: Farmers Creek is down Major Thomas Mitchell Drive before you reach the Dam Wall, it leads right to the water and some good fishing  The shore line in the upper reaches of the Dam all looks like that, some great areas and I am trying to find some tracks into some other spots. Were you having a fish?

    Cheers

    Windy

    thats where we were

done near the white steel gate

we were having a flick down there

had a decent brown I think follow up a rapalla slit lure hit the end of it and take off at my feet

there were rsers everywhere out deeper

    cheers Matt

  15. Gday mate, I have not got a 3mm lower suit yet, they are available, alot of water skiers and wakeboarders use them, added advantage is alot of them have bouyancy inbuilt into them.

I will start doing some research soon on this

The mornings and evenings are starting to get cold

I was up at Lake Lyall on sunday and there where trout sising every where, the kayak would have been great to get out to them if I hac it but the water was freezing.

  16. Hi Jamie,

Yep a good (and important question) re lighting on a kayak.

I've got a Seattle Sports HydroStar MultiStrobe Light on mine that you can attach with it's suction cup base to your kayak and I reckon it's great. See link below.

    http://www.austinkayak.com/products/1036/S...robe-Light.html

You can switch it from red/green nav lights, LED strobe light that flashes on and off (very effective) or just set it to full light. You can even detach it from it's magnetic base and use it as a standard torch. Very verstatile and waterproof too. Uses 4 x AAA batteries which last for ages.

I'll PM you the details of where you can get them in Sydney.

    Regards

    Marty

    Thanks Marty looks great

Another question, what winter clothing do you use on the kayak

I have had a look and some gear looks bloody exspensive

    Any tips

    Cheers

  17. Hi all,

Hit the water at around 5pm yesterday. Launched my Hobie Revolution at the ramp near Gladesville bridge and proceeded to troll a couple of hard bodies underneath the bridge to the mouth of Tarban Creek. A fluro shad rap deep diver on my 2-4kg outfit and a bigger deeper diver (can't remember brand) on my heavier 3-6kg flick stick.

Chopper tailor hit my lures from around 300m from the ramp and continued until the mouth of Tarban Creek. These were a pretty good size around 35-40cm and I scored around 4 of them in that time. Just past the western side of the bridge my heavier outfit got hit harder than usual and after a short but spirited fight pulled in a nice 35cm bream. While not an overly big specimen it hit the biggest lure I've ever nailed a bream on.

While trolling near the mouth of Tarban Creek it was interesting to see all the bait fish fleeing the tailor (and possibly larger predators) in the vicinity. It was amazing to hear the baitfish first erupting out of the water (like hard rain hitting the water) before seeing the water churn and even the tailor jumping out of the water in hot pursuit. One of my favourite Rapala Shad Raps got bitten clear off while on the troll (bummer :05: ) so I reckon there were some decent tailor among them. I pulled one in with 2 long gashes down one of it's flanks. On one occasion I saw the churning water approaching my kayak at speed (love the silent approach :) ) but the larger fish scattered as my kayak neared (I was trolling so in hindsight I should have just cast at the approaching fish).

Was a nice calm evening on the water and pulled the pin at 7:30pm. All fish were returned (it is the Parramatta river after all) but I have a couple of questions for anyone who may know the area:

    1) Would tailor (a fairly migratory and top water fish) be safe to eat (as opposed to a resident bream or muddy flatty); and

    2) Apart from tailor, does anyone know of any other predatory fish in the area? (aussie salmon or possibly rat kings come to mind, I know the cobia caught there recently too)

Can't wait to hit the area again and may even use one of the choppers as live bait next time :1prop:

Hey Marty what type of lighting you running on your kayak?

I have just bought one and I am starting to deck it out with all the gear.

With the short days now I want to have a go down the LCR after work but want to hang a lite off it for saftey reasons

    Any tips?

    Jamie.

  18. Well done Marty on getting your yaks - just cruise around the edges casting under trees & into shadows ahead of you .... just a matter of time till you get one!

Re Slipping on the rocks - do you have felt soled shoes? Ever tried them? they are good on the river rocks. Normal wading shoes normally don't hack it at all!

    Cheerio

    Roberta

Hey Roberta it was me "Yes Dear" that got the yaks

got to start decking them out now

    cheers

  19. Yeah that could have been me and my mate wading past the crossing. Were you at the river crossing directly off the main road from Thredbo or the one further down past Keebles hut?

Yeah there weren't many trout around this year. Low water levels and warmer water I think contributed to the poor fishing.

We were camped right next to Keeble's Hut and fished a few km's down stream. Was hard work catching that one trout. Left camp at around 7:30am and didn't make it back until about 4pm that afternoon. Walking in waders over those damn smooth and uneven rocks certainly takes it's toll. Was pretty sore after that. Can't beat the serenity though!

    Marty

We were at the first xing next to the Geehi Hut

we had 2 red kayaks on the trailer right next to the xing

you are right those river pebbles are hard going but the water was so clear

I reckon I must have spooked every fish in the river with all the slipping and spluttering through the water

I was amazed at some of the deep pools that didn't hold fish but when you see kids chucking rocks in them you can figure it out.

Maybe an off peak trip next time.

    cheers

    Marty

  20. Hi Marty,

I got back from Geehi last night and after 6 days down there got next to zip

we camped next to the river crossing and saw a couple of spinners heading out on dusk each arvo was that you?

best i could manage was 2 10 inch rainbows down stream from the crossing 1 12 inch rainbow up past the road bridge and few little tackers

I did manage to spook a large brown twice that was on the far bank in the pool upstream from the xing whilst retrieving a lure from a tree.

The 12 inch ranbow was actually caught by my darling wife after I pointed out where to flick here lure (if I had got there first it would have been mine).

we tried all the river up and down from the crossing.

    the stream under Bogon bridge

the geehi walls trail area down stream

the Murry 2 Dam on Kayaks

    the Kahncoban River

the middle stream on the way up to Geehis Dam

    Where abouts did you go

    cheers

And Roberta we now have Kayaks but not the Hobies we could aford them

But are starting to enjoy cruising around and fishing in tight places

  21. Yeah mate, I will stay with the parents. I will head up on Friday morning but unfortunately will have to come back Sunday (tournament director duties on the Monday).

Beautiful spot up there at Geehi, should be some top fishing too. I might see if I can head up to that area, was going to spend some time around Tantangara and maybe drive up to Khancoban and have a look at the pondage and perhaps the Swampy Plains River but will see what pans out.

One of the spots we hit on the weekend just gone was Dry Dam up near Cabramurra, amazing little dam chockas with small Browns, Rainbows and Brookies. We got 7 Browns up to about 500g (all released except one which died) on ultra light spinning tackle and a couple on Dry's, loads of fun so if you get the chance have a look at some of the small Dams on the way there, I bet there fishing the same

    Cheers

    Windy

    thanks for the info

I will have plenty of time to cruise around and check out some good spots

    thanks for the info anglers
