  1. Wow! Amazing job on the sp's!

Any updates on how successful these have been for you?

I'm also curious about the question that greenhornet raised. Is possible to melt old, damaged, placcies and remold them into a new sp?

Is it possible to do spot repairs on torn soft vibes for example by refilling holes with fresh plastisol?

  2. Interesting topic Little_Flatty. The forked tail of my Samaki vibe must have come into contact with one of my zman plastics! The tail is now all floppy, mushy and sticky, but the rest of the body seems to have avoided total meltdown 🤣. Cost me an arm and a leg, so I've been trying to find a solution to somehow make the plastic material harden again so the lure is still semi-usable.

  3. Sledgehammer- Peter Gabriel

Hmmm still not convinced with Monkey gone to heaven.

Obviously a heavenly reference with the monkey and and heavens gates.

But who stands at the gates of heaven ? Peter! As in Gabriel!

I agree with @berleyguts with Heaven is a place on earth.

We're all just guessing and googling unless we get the official list from your friend!

Very hard to see when zooming in on the picture on my tablet.

    Super trouper?

Lol.That sort of language is heard at church here in Campbelltown and is nothing compared to what you hear in public. 😂That guy seriously needs to hit the gym and work on his strength and cardio watching him struggling and huffing and puffing like a steam train  over fighting a fish.

    Nice fish non the less.

Fab1, don't forget he's pumping this fish from a kayak! It's much harder work compared to a fisherman standing upright in a boat or from a rock ledge. Think about the lack of leverage. I think he's done a bloody good job with no motor to assist him in pulling away from that rusted heap!

No such thing as a dumb question! I just don’t want to hijack your thread!

In ANSA competition, the biggest fish doesn’t necessarily win. The line class you are fishing also comes into it. So, a 6kg fish on 10kg line could be beaten by, say, a 3kg fish on 2kg line. Each species has a fighting factor based on its assessed “fighting ability”. For example, flathead have a factor of 1. Bream 1.2 (I think), marlin 1.2, bass/kings/tuna/bonito 1.5, broadbill 2. Carp are 0.5. The score for each fish is calculated as follows:

    (weight x fighting factor x 100)/line class = points

    So a 3kg flathead on 2kg line would score 150 points: (3 x 1 x 100)/2 = 150.

    A 6kg kingfish on 10kg line would score only 90 points: (6 x 1.5 x 100)/10 = 90.

If the two fish were entered in the same division (say, Sportfishing in Estaries or Lakes), the 3kg flathead would win over the 6kg kingfish.

When submitting an entry, the line may be tested (for a record claim, a sample MUST be submitted for testing), so we have to be sure that our line used breaks at or below the line class we are fishing. If it breaks above, it’s classed as being in the next line class, e.g. if 2kg line breaks at 2.2, it’s classed as 3kg line class, if 10kg line breaks at 10.1, it jumps to 15kg line class. To safeguard against this we buy signature or pretest line (I use Platypus Pretest), which is tested and declared to break at a defined breaking point. This is for mono... there is not much pretest braid about and it can be expensive. To cater for the advancement in technology and increased use of braid/gelspun lines, ANSA introduces the allowed use of a short length (minimum 500mm) of breakaway line. This breakaway line would be pretest mono, so although you’re using braid for the benefits of sensitivity etc., you still have a weak link of breakaway that will break at or under your nominated line class. Does that make sense?

So is your line class ultimately determined by the lowest breaking piece of line in the rig?

So you could have 25kg braid mainline + 5kg pretest mono breakaway + 20kg fluorocarbon shock leader, and this would be considered 5kg line class?

Not 1/2 mm actually. 5/100ths of a mm.... 0.05mm. Negligible. Give it a go. ? I fish quite light line, in ANSA line classes, so usually use mono for my mainline. When I use braid, I use a short length of pretest mono as a breakaway line but I always use a shock leader of fluorocarbon. The strength to diameter rating of Vanish is pretty good.

Hi Berleyguts, Can you explain a bit more? What do you mean by a breakaway line? Do you have braid mainline then mono them fluoro?

I use a tiny swivel tied into my leader with a small Mustad Fastach or Norman Speed Clip attached. Tackle Tactics Fastlink clips are rated highly by a lot of fishos and there’s also Hawaiian clips that are similar to the Speed Clips. I rate them in this order: Mustad, TT, Norman, Hawaiian.

It may be counterintuitive, but the smaller the swivel, the easier it spins. So use the smallest one with enough strength. For my 10kg line, I use a 20kg swivel, its tiny. Some packets show the break strain of the swivel, some will say what line class they suit.

I would steer clear of coast lock, cross lock, egg snap, etc. They can all come undone easily if bitten by the fish, they're bulky so they snag easier, they're heavier so they affect the lure’s action more, and they leave room for user error if you don't clip them perfectly every time.

I wouldn't use a split ring, and in fact, I remove the split rings from all my lures’ tow points if possible. Many times the factory split rings are rubbish anyway, so if I need to have one on the lure I like to replace them with ones I know are good quality.

    Hi Mainframejames,

What size in the fastech do you use for lures up to say 110mm?

I assume slightly bigger is better than too small. Bigger would ensure enough "loop" for the lure to swim properly?

The fishing is hotting up down here with many of the beaches having salmon tailor and sharks etc. The north side of the bridge between Narooma and Dalmeny will often have a few decent gutters which you can pretty much spot from the car. The beach north of Dalmeny has gutters along it, while just infront of the lake at Dal can often be good for bream and whiting ( and sometimes bigger sharks).

The inside section along the cycle path by Easts caravan park and the swimming pool can be good for bream and whiting. There have also been some 1m + kings in the inlet lately. The main wharf can be ok around the tide changes but a little challenging when the current is running hard.

If you do t mind a drive then head to Tilba but rather than take the right turn into the little village turn left instead and head down towards the cemetery ( keep hanging right). At the end of the track ( about 2km ) you will find a stunning beach that often has plenty of deep gutters that fish very well. This area fishes well after dark also for gummies and the odd jew, there have also been some good jews in the inlet over the last week well over the metre.

The guys in the complete angler between the library and the ice creamery will happily keep you updated and food at the ice creamery is also pretty good. If you are travelling with family then Tilba is often good for those with a sweat tooth.

    Hi JonD,

This is a timely post as I'm also headed down for a spot of camping at Surfbeach holiday park so I may run into jonnyboy trying out the spots you've mentioned.

Is it worth spinning a lure or soaking a pilly at the beach directly in front of the Surfbeach holiday park?

If I bring my yak along can you point me to any spots to try in the inlet or on the ocean side? Would be fun to land one of the stonker bream from your $10 rod challenge. Or maybe get a feed of squid and chase a king in the inlet. Any of your local knowledge would be appreciated!

There is no loop knot that is as strong as a Half Blood or Uni knot.   Use a split ring. It holds its round shape under tension better than a loop knot as well which is the reason for using a loop knot.

Are you saying split ring means loop knot is not required

  10. Hi Raiders,

This probably sounds like a dumb question, but here goes..

When MUST you use a split ring? I am referring to split rings which are attached to hardbodies/surface lures/vibes/blades/poppers/metals for the purpose of connecting to your line.

Some lures come new in the box with split rings and some don't. I've heard different theories like:

    - Never tie a knot directly to a split ring

    - Can tie a knot direct to a split ring but don't use a loop knot

    - You can use snaps to connect to split rings because split rings already behave like a loop knot

    - Removing the split ring from a lure will impact the action severely

    - Adding a split ring will improve action

    - Etc, etc

To me split rings are just another added pain to deal with. Another possible point of failure and they are expensive and fiddly to deal with! In the interest of keeping things simple, I was considering removing them altogether from my lures (of course they are still necessary to connect trebles to the lure!).

I'm interested in your thoughts and opinions on this topic..

How do you generally connect your main line/leader to hardbody lures?

    Cheers,

    Mr swoodi

here are my personal advice, which may or may not appeal to you. There is a app call wechat which I currently uses, it's very handle it's a chatting/SMS/video call etc. Might be worth while to consider taking fish raider a step ahead for the fisho here. Basically, people from fish raider will be invited to a group chat. People show and share their catch instantly and anyone can comment whenever they get the chance.

    easy to use and convenient.

anyway it's up to you champ. Your the boss :)

Hi papafish, How would an English-only user go about conversing in wechat?

I have been looking at cranka crabs and I was just wondering are these worth buying and what is the best technique for fishing with them thanks.

I have yet to use mine, but I've been told that a very, very slow roll is all that is needed. It is a real test of your patience when using this method!

    Estuary spinning

First thing you will need is a decent combo in the 2-4kg range loaded up with some 6-8lb braid and some 8-10lb flurocarbon leader

    my go to hardbodies are

    ecogear sx40

zerek tango shad 50mm atomic hards shad

    black magic bmax

    strikepro pygmy

Remember lure fishing isn't just casting a lure and catching fish consistently catching fish on lures takes lots of trial and error

A good place to start is areas where you know there are loads of flathead and tailor these are good targets to refine your techniques

    hope this helps
