  1. Hi IWANNAJEWY

Considered that but rust is also becoming an issue. The trailer is as old

as the boat (about 30 years)

Sent it away once to a trailer place at moorebank to have the trailer

    overhauled and what a balls-up.

Charged me over $1000 to replace an axle, 2 hubs and 2 tyres. The

trailer did the bearings within 6 months.

Did ther other axle and hubs myself.

Need to wipe the slate clean and start fresh with a new trailer.

    Cheers

    G'day Pretend Fisho,

A few years ago I bought a 5.8 metre Whittley which had been kept in dry storage and didn't have a trailer. I bought a cheaper brand of trailer and had nothing but trouble. In the end I got so frustrated I sold the trailer and went with the preferred Whittley cradle. PM me if you like, and I can give you some more info.

    Kenny

  2. Now I'm not normally one to get the sh**ts, but last Saturday, I had to wait at Berowra ramp because someone had parked their boat ON THE RAMP, whilst getting their trailer. We're talking about a 5 metre plus boat here too, not some tinny. Then, they had the nerve to push in & back the trailer down the ramp BESIDE their boat, thereby now taking up 2 spots. GRRRRR!

  3. Hi kw367....

Dramamine... childs dose... one taken on the night before...

and one with brecky on the morning you are going out.... works a treat.

the down side being he will tend to feel a bit sleepy......

as with all sea sickness tablets though read the instructions on the packet

as for the weather bom tends to overstate

seabreeze tends to understate so settle in the middle.....

going by that then.... the better option would be to try and go saturday... sunday

looks to be a bit on the breezy side.....

    Cheers Warnie...

All my questions answered.. Thanks Warnie!

  4. Hi Raiders,

Need some advice here. I'm booked to take 6 year old son PJ on a whale watching tour off Sydney on Sunday. Trouble is he is a bit prone to sea sickness. I was going to see if travel sickness pills are OK for a 6 year old to take. BUT to make matters worse, BOM is forecasting winds increasing to 20-30 knots on Sunday, whereas Seabreeze says about 15 knots. Who do I believe? :(

  5. Went out on the Hawkesbury solo today, without son PJ who is spending the weekend with Mum. Was nonetheless great to be out there.

Lost several hooks, and was wondering what might have been taking them. Started using long shanks and landed a couple of school jewies and just under size bream. One of the jewies had swallowed the (long shank) hook, leading me to think that they might have been the culprits. Have any Raiders had a similar experience in the area, or have any idea as to what else may have been responsible (i.e. flathead, although I've never caught one at Bar Point).

No pics today as I didn't have the photogenic one with me! Will put out a call to other boatless Raiders next time, maybe I could get some hot tips!! :biggrin2:

  6. I am thinking about getting a full storm cover made for my boat.

I keep my boat under a carport but the front of it still gets smashed by the afternoon westerly sun. I am also sick of the boat getting dusty from a nearby construction site. I have looked at the covers you buy from Bias & Whitworths but lets face it they are crap and wont fit properly. I want one made from quality material that is waterproof and breathes............ and fits!

So I want to a get a custom full cover made. Has anyone had one made recently or know how much a custom job would cost ?????

My boat is a 18ft Seafarer and I want the cover to cover the entire boat/motor.

Please any feedback will be greatly appreciated. If anyone can recommend a manufacturer/company feel free to PM me.

    Thanks

    Nathan.

Have sent you a PM Nathan.

  7. Hi Mate,

Lots of good advice so far.

A few points I would make are..

You need to be able to see your trailer wheels at all times, knock your side mirrors out a bit so that you can see the wheels and the lane next to you at all times.

When reverseing with the trailer forget about your rear vision mirror it is useless, you need to know where the trailer wheels are. The boat is usaully above that :)

When looking into your side mirrors you have a straight line (your car) to reference the trailer to... if you can see one trailer wheel and not the other you are off track..

As has been said .... Slow and easy wins every time.

    Cheers,

    Robbie.

Just to add to what Robbie says, if you can see more trailer in one mirror than the other, you need to turn the steering wheel in that direction to correct it, e.g. if there is more trailer in the right hand mirror, turning the wheel to the right should correct this.

  8. Gidday Locodave,

I have an older 4.85 Stacer bowrider and its only rated for 5. I could not see either rated at more than 5.

Another catch is thats 5 people at 75kg each (375kg) for good conditions.

The Waterways Boating Handbook indicates the basic details, including an additional allowance of 15kg per person for personal gear. The following was also applicable (my book is the 2003/04 version), children up to 1yr are not counted, between 1-12 equals half adult.

If you are 100kg like me and you carry 4 others the same size, technically your not legal with 5 onboard (500kg).

    Found this at http://www.nmsc.gov.au/documents/ABP_Recom...sTechRefDoc.pdf

ABYC uses a person capacity of 62.5 kg per person for calculating maximum number of persons whereas the AS 1799 uses 75 kg per person. The reference group considered this statement to be incorrect. The ABYC uses 62.4 as a multiplying factor as part of a set formula and is not in kilograms, but part of a sequential equation to achieve a total capacity figure. See ABYC H –5.7/04

From ABYC H5 7/04 step number 4— person capacity =maximum weight capacity (includes motor ect)+32

divided by 141. Then rounded to the next whole number. Also person capacity can be found in ABYC calculations under (n) section H28 7/04 section 28.9.2 and is stated as 165 pounds or 75kg.

It appears to be related to the use of AS 1799 or ISO (Australian vs International) standards for the plate. They appear to use different calculation methods & adult weights.

    Hope this helps.

    Steve

:1prop::wacko: You lost me after "G'day Locodave"! :074:

  9. Hey guys, have a question.

Saw a Quintrex 490 today, it had a plate (attached) saying Basic flotation 7 Adults, and Buoyancy Level 5 adults. So does that mean I can have 7 adults on that boat?

If so, why does the 489 Stacer only allow 5 people max?

    http://www.stacer.com.au/view_boat.aspx?stockc=SB489ER

Or does it have a flotation rule too?

    Thanks :D

    And the plate

In answer to your first question (I'm sure Huey will correct me if I'm wrong), the Quinny has level flotation, which means it will float the correct way up even if swamped with up to five people on board. It can take up to seven people, but is only rated for basic flotation with this many, (which means it may invert).

    As for questions 2 & 3.....HELP HUEY!!! :1prop:

  10. I've had a boat before, but never did the towing or the launching.

Do you think by purchasing a new 4.90m boat, might be a bit difficult at first?

Should I opt for a smaller boat first until I learn all the ropes to boating first and then upgrade?

Just out of interest, what sort of boat are you getting Locodave?

  11. Are these the only way to get these types of seats?

As i have been looking and cant find them.

and i am sure the would be a pretty penny from Quintrex.

This seat would also solve alot of problems i have.

G'day Wastin (can I call you that for short?)

I have PM'ed you an alternate supplier, as well as a picture. Hope this helps!

  12. Hi Kenny, I have sent you an email and I think the seats from WW will look good in your boat, just be aware that you will proably have to replace the pedestals as well becasue I do not think the seats will be interchangeable.

    Cheers,

    Huey.

Thanks Huey, I'll check it out!

  13. Good Morning, the flip back seats from Telwater are excellent seats and having the ability to change direction without swivelling the seat is great and they are comfortable to boot. We can order as a spare part and you also get the "Raider" discount.

PM me if you would like details,

    Cheers,

    Huey.

Done Huey, thanks! Here is a picture of my boats cockpit to give you an idea of the colour scheme. Note the swivel under the passenger seat but not the skippers!

    Thanks again!

  14. Hi Quinny & Stacer Owners with the flippy seats!

Just wondering how you guys like this type of seat. I'm thinking of putting one in my Bayliner because I can't fit a swivel under the driver's seat. It would make it much better to fish out of in Summer, as PJ and I could both shelter under the bimini whilst facing the back of the boat.

    Thaaaanx!

  15. The ride of the Stacer will be about the best you get in a pressed alloy tinny and you are able to drive the boat on if you like, but it means dunking the trailer, which in slat water will cause many troubles and what I would do is get yourself a power winch if you are not wanting to wind up by hand. the savings in not doing wheels bearings etc over a couple of years will pay for the winch.

Jeez Huey, you're making me feel lazy!! :074: I don't mind winching by hand, as long as I can drive the boat on partially I'll be happy, and not have to tie a rope to the front and pull it on etc etc. I'm used to the Bayliner skid trailer, which you basically have to dunk quite a ways or else it's too hard to winch up.

  16. I'd like to hear other opinions from members on their reasons for downsizing a boat a subject brought up lately by another member, but my reply to give it the proper attention it deserved was far too lengthy as a reply post to a question asked

    jewgaffer :1fishing1:

I would be that member Jewgaffer refers to, and he raises some very valid points. The downsize I am considering would be my second in recent years, having had a Whittley Monterey before the Bayliner. Whilst the Whittley was a great boat, a day on the water used to be somewhat jaded by the thought that at the end of the day, I've got to (largely singlehandedly) get this thing back on the trailer and then spend a couple of hours returning it to a pristine state, and then because it was too big to garage, cumbersomely put a tarp over it! :(

The Bayliner, although a similar length (6 metres), is sooo much easier to handle solo, being a bowrider. It is also much easier to clean and store, but to me it's a matter of horses for courses. I figure if I'm fishing 90% of the time, why not, as Jewgaffer suggests, have something which suits that purpose. A 220hp V8 seems like overkill running up and down Berowra Creek. An aluminium runabout with a 90hp would still allow me to ski for 10% of the time, but would probably be more practicable for the majority of the time. A quick rinse & flush of the motor and she's ready to put in the garage which the Bayliner is too wide to fit into! And when it all comes down to it, it's great just being out on the water, no matter what sort of boat you're in!!

Having said all that, I'll probably keep the Bayliner for a little while yet, it's more of a chick magnet now that I'm separated!!! :074::074:

  17. You should laugh all the way to the bank!!

    Ross

You mean laugh all the way to my ex-wife's bank! :074::074:

Another question for youse guys. I've always been a drive on/off the trailer sort a guy. First with a Whittley with a roller trailer and lately with the Bayliner with it's American skid type trailer. Can I do this with the typical skid type tinny trailer? I'd be happy to winch the last part, but no ropes and pulling on for me!!

  18. G'day Raiders,

Long time no posts! I've been a bit distracted lately...separating from your :wife: will do that to you!!! :05:

ANYWAY....nuff about that for now. PJ and I got out for a :1fishing1: on the Hawkesbury for the first time in months today. I thought the river, and fishing was quiet a few months ago, but it was even more so today. Managed a smallish Flatty and Bream, as well as one noiiccee bream (photos later in another post).

ANYHOO, thats not the reason for this post. Since separating I've been thinking about selling the 20ft Bayliner bowrider and getting something smaller, in a bid to cut costs, easier to store etc. I'm thinking about an aluminium runabout of about 15ft with about a 75hp motor (still want to be able to ski at a pinch). Got my eye on a new Bermuda Island Shore at the moment. Not to fussed about getting a DFI or a four stroke, I'm tipping ANY 75hp will be cheaper to run than a 220hp sterndrive!!! Sooo, what do you think raiders, am I going to be disappointed with the stability, ride etc., having being used to a "limo"? Or will the practicality, better suitability to fishing + a bit of money left over in my sky rocket have me cheering??!! :1prop:

    Thaanks!!

  19. Lovely little boat, can't wait to see the BFT reports :tease:

    IFS

Hmmm....methinks any attempts to catch YFT or BFT in this boat could only lead to NEWS reports!! :074:
