  1. All good arthur! When I went fishing in the states with my uncle.. the fish they caught... in all honestly, if i caught a log, I'd be more excited LOL!! We ended up deciding on somewhere around rose bay as my dad has had some good run ins with trevally and flatties there recently

  2. It's been a while since I've been out! I feel like I'm dying inside :'( Anyhow, my uncle is coming over from the states and I want to get him onto some fish here in syd. We've got a 5.5m tinnie to take out so I was thinking somewhere in the hacking, or in botany. Hows things in those systems? Anything around recently? From memory, last winter in the hacking was pretty damn quiet :'(

  3. I'm so sad!!! I hope we can work out something to keep all the raiders in touch. I would love to get something on Facebook started in order for everyone to keep in touch and share all this valuable information.

When I first joined FR, I was just bored in class and googling fishing reports, this lead to me re-kindling my love for fishing. The countless hours I spent on this forum reading instead of actually studying kind of paid off... with me landing more fish but landing less marks hahaha... But with that being said, this site is a gold mine of information and I'm so sad that it's going! I hope that everyone will stay in touch as I don't think I have ever seen so many open people and genuinely helpful and supportive people on a forum before! I've made friends here and fished with a few of you and shared adventures together! I hope that we can keep this sharing and helpful fishing culture going. I'm part of many fishing forums/facebook groups now but this group has always been the best! There is nothing like FR around and I truly wish everyone the best!!! Please look after your health and should you ever see me on the water in my yak, give me a shout!! :D

Best wishes to everyone and once again thank you to all the admins for your hard work!

Are you going more for the fast or slow style jigs? I've picked myself up a slimy mackerel blue 30g in the fast jig which I'm keen to check out as I know there's plenty of slimys in the bay at the moment. Not sure which brand I went for, probably not the most expensive one!

Might go for a yakka coloured slow jig, hedge my bets and see if I can tempt a kingy.

I just rip up and down with the jigs and I have had luck with both an orange and a blue jig, so I'm not sure as to whether colours really do make a difference just yet. I've heard the storm gomoku jigs are pretty good but theyre a bit pricey for me, you can get knock offs for half the price :D The jigs I have, have a flutter motion, not sure what type of jigs there are out there LOL sorry! Still bit of a noob.

  6. Thanks so much guys, another question is my dad is okay with english probs a 6/10 LMAO not sure how he survived 20+ years in aus with it but just curious if the theory can be done in chinese? if anyone has any sort of insight there, I'll be booking one down hopefully this week :)

What kind of micro jigs would you recommend for the Bay? Keen on trying out a new technique but really not sure where to start!

Heyo! I've been using the micro jigs made by old site sponsor riggit, I dunno where he's gone and I can't find his jigs anymore :'( but they weren't too expensive and great for beginners! I'd search the other bay for jigs ;) for waters up to 20m, I'm using anything up to 40g, atm the ones that have been catching fish are around the 30g mark

the weather-wind and swell-dictates how /how fast or slow/the boat is driven.Feel nervous=slow down.A guy used to to fish the Peak in a kayak, he is still around. His extra skill was weather predicting.Always submit to the conditions, don't push your luck on the ocean. The limits of any boats is commonsense on the day. Most days no need to worry at all.Cheers..

Thanks wizza! Being in the kayak has helped me judge swell and weather now as its a one man gig! Super excited to get out and see how the boat goes! Thanks for the advice :)

I did mine yesterday with a company with mostly letters as its name, think alphabet. It was actually an excellent 1 day course. Theory in the morning, the written multi choice test and then an afternoon in the boat. Very practical common sense approach. I've been boating for 25 years or so without a license and thought it was about time I got one :)

    Matt

Thanks matt! I was actually looking at their course too! I'll have to book one in this week :)

G'day Allen, well done Dad on getting a boat which you can both have fun in. Do as fisholb suggests and do the proper boat license course. Think of it like a car. Sure your reactions are probably quicker than your Dads but he is older, wiser, has more life experiences. As with a car, you will both have a different approach to using the boat...but neither of you are going to be reckless. Like a car it takes lots of practice to become experienced so get out on the water and enjoy each others company, while you can. Remember. No fish is worth risking your life for. Keep safe and enjoy any time out on the water, with your Dad. BN

Thank neil, I agree completely with no fish is worth risking your life for especially after the rescue the other day. I will defs be getting a proper boat license so I'm looking at a few places to do it. I was looking for any previous raider experience with license providers :)

    hi mate

    whereabouts do you live?

    i got mine from penrith.

cost me $245 for the license inc practical and theory. takes about 3hrs for the course.

i used to hire a 6m boat with 150hp. best thing to do is know the boat 1st inside the bay or harbour before you take it outside the heads. the weather outside can change from good to bad in minutes. always check the forecast the night before and before u take the boat out on the day. i use willyweather for swell and wind. never take the boat outside the heads if the swell is over 2m and wind over 20knots. always check your safety gear and always your your pfd. goodluck with the new boat.

Thanks fisholb, I'm in the bexley area so I get access to the georges and the hacking to practise. I'll need to get used to the boat first as I did with my yak. I probably wont be taking it out to the heads anytime soon and just practise inside the bay and deeper channels in the hacking :) Do you mind pm'ing which place you got your license please?

  10. So... Dad went out with a few mates and bought a boat, nothing special. Its an aluminium runabout with 75 horses on the back. I have a few questions:

    1. Where is the best place for me and my dad to get a boat license? Fair price, good course and preferably can be done in a day.

    2. What are the limits to the boat? I would like my dad to get out and have fun but be safe most importantly, I have faster reactions than him, I understand the ocean better than he does but I can't be out with him all the time. I told him to keep it in the bay because it was a runabout but if anyone can give some more pointers that would be great :)

Other than that I'm excited to get out in it but deep at heart I'm still a kayaker ;P

ive caught fish on a 5mm x 2cm piece of squid, if fish are hungry, they won't be fussy hahaha also gotten kings on a 2cm strip of baby squid LOL fish are so damn unpredictable :'(

    Don't ask.....

Got it early, got a live squid and some yakka and headed out to molly point. I got a 62 kingie, whilst Allen jigged a smaller version but also landed a massive bloody Trevally going 42 i think. There were reports of big sharks as well but lalala

As the fishing slowed i suggested to Allen "hey, wanna go out to the drums". So we go out and have a look and about 15 minutes after we arrive we watch these blokes in a tinnie try to stand, and there she goes! The boat rolls and old mates over board. Im convinced the boat was going under so we head off to help. When we arrive the 'captain' (70 yo aussie) is in the boat which is some how still floating, and old mate (70+ yo Tongan with very bad arthritis) is holding on top the edge of the boat.  They were pretty dismissive of our help and taking the situation lightly, so we left them to their plan to head to the drum to get him out of the water.

After 5 minutes of watching captain walk around the drum with no sight of old mate, we decide to go help once more.  Old mate couldn't lift himself and captain couldn't get him up.  So long story short i offloaded all my gear to allen in case i flipped my yak and climbed on the shit covered drum (those of you that know the aroma, you know.....) to help.  Old mate is petrified, cold, weak and can't swim. His life jacket isn't done up so it's doing nothing.  Me and cap' couldn't lift him because he weighed 160+kg and he couldn't actually swing a leg onto the drum once we had him out of the water.  Allen the champ has mean while gone half way to Mexico to flag down a boat. End story, old mate ends up in the strangers boat, me and Allen got the tinnie back around the drum from were it was stuck, we bailed 100 odd litres of water out of it (they were impossibly close to sinking), i threw cap his life jacket (which was at the bottom of the boat) and swore at him for taking the stupid, shallow hulled, tippy peice of ##### of a boat out into the middle of botany bay. Worst of all they had a few undersized snapper in the boat.

2 hours we spent, helping dumb and dumber. F. M. L.....

    tears were shed :'(

    Now that's a burger.

What's that piled on the chips? I see bacon, cheese, spring onions and (chipotle?) mayo, but there's something darker lurking beneath.

pulled pork :P Heart attack waiting to happen but so worth it after plenty of fishing :D

Well you 2 guys certainly tried your hardest to get the other 2 out of trouble and should be applauded for that. No surprise though that the guys who were doing the wrong thing were ungrateful. People are either givers or takers. You and Krause gave assistance and the other 2 jerks took it for granted. Some people...honestly!  BN

Thanks neil, we do it because we are good people and good people look out for the rest :) I honestly think they were just lucky we were in the area because if we weren't I wouldn't be surprised it they end up on the news...

Did you get their rego number? It's located near the bow of the boat. If you can, report them to fisheries.

if you didn't get their rego, next time you see them take it down and report it. Not only did those selfish jerks take undersized fish they risked their and, more importantly, your lives. Those two clowns are a time bomb accident waiting to happen. I bet they drop all their rubbish into the harbour too.

Unfortunately, we didn't even think to get their rego plate, I think it all just happened so fast and we were so focused on getting old mate out of the water and away from the sharks or whatever was underneath. Because we were at the seal colony, we both just acted out of instinct. I do know it was a small 3m ish tinnie yellow colour with a bimini and a crappy 10hp motor. That's all I know as far as descriptions go :)  And I agree complete, those two idiots definitely risked their lives to take home some undersized snapper.... that really got our blood boiling.

  16. Hello fishraider fam! *LONG READ AHEAD*

So yesterday me and krause set up a trip for yakkers with a solid turnout of us two hahaha. Here's how the day went.

Neither of us could sleep so we were both up at 2:30am LOL. I made it down to La-pa at 4am hoping to get into some squid. Being the first time I've tried to properly go for squid this was going to an interesting morning to say the least. When krause got here, we casted out jigging and waiting and after a solid 20-30 casts and we were striking up a cracking convo I felt a heavy weight at the end of the line and thus that was my first squid! Bloody beautiful creature, unfortunately to be turned into a livie in about 2 hours.

    16833623_10155245349950934_639429021_o.jpg

Hooray to $2 cheapie jigs (time to buy a hell lot more).

By 530am we were both on the water after a successful beach launch in yarra bay (very important that it was successful because I have a poor experience with beach launches, krause can confirm). We spent the next 1-1.5 hours searching for yakkas and more squid before heading to moli point. Seeing good reports the day prior but also a bit hesitant because of the big ass shark report. Regardless we went up to moli point where a few boats were already waiting. Upon arrival we start our first drift and hear one of the tinnies shout "^*&% it's a SHARK", you can imagine our faces and the chatter on the walkies after that. The other boat had hooked up to a rat and was taken by a shark (not sure what species) He proceeded to fight it for a good thirty minutes and was towed out in the bay. Regardless we fished on, my livie harassed, now dead but relatively untouched. I picked up a nice 42cm trevally, very fat and great fight on the light outfit and then things slowed down for a bit. Krause picked up a rat to 62cm on a live yakka and then I picked up a 55ish one on a microjig with the gomoku (my fave fishing method right now). From there things really slowed down until another guy on a tinnie picked up a rat which was circled by ANOTHER SHARK on the way up... well okay then that kind of explains the lack of action for the day.

Moving on, we moved on towards the drums where things got interesting... It was lovely seeing the big ass seals that lived on the drums, I love me a bit of nature. We went over our spot for a single drift before things got interesting. Krause yelled out to me to turn around and as soon as I do I see a bloke fall off a small 3m tinnie. The tinnie proceeds to tilt 45+ degrees into the water and takes on a ton of water, I was expecting it to flip but amazingly it righted itself. The lip of the tinnie now sat 5cm off the surface of the water and with the wind chop picking up, things didn't look good. I paddled over immediately to see if I could offer any assistance shortly followed by Krause. To my surprise it was two old blokes in the boat, easily 60+. The one in the drink hadn't even had his life jacket done up properly, it was unzipped and just floating around (ALWAYS WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET AND WEAR IT PROPERLY). By now the currents picked up and the wind had picked up. The one in the drink could not get himself back into the boat and that was probably for the best seeing that the boat was almost a submarine... He slid down to the back of the boat and held on whilst his mate drove the thing towards the drums. This whole time whilst we were trying to instruct them, old mate in the boat was making jokes about his mate "hows the water?", "great day for a swim isn't it", "hahaha you fell in the water", "haha this is why you never fall off the boat", etc etc clearly not helping with the situation. At this stage, the one in the drink was panting heavily and clearly stressed out.

Eventually we get to the drums and now hes holding onto the rope there for dear life. Old mate gets out of the boat and tries to deadlift him out of the water (not smart), so krause decides to give a hand whilst I look after the gear and watch over the sitch. He jumps onto the drums and lies in all the seal faeces and vomit and fish remains to clip up the guys life jacket (Krause is a legend, a poop and fish covered legend). Now we realised our biggest problem. The bloke was atleast 120-140kg... so getting him out of the water was pretty much impossible. After 30 minutes of unsuccessful attempts to get him out of the water another fishing vessel had just anchored up for a fish. Also can I just mention, the bloke in the drink did not co-operate with krauses advice and instruction and would not try to get himself out of the water all in the meantime he didn't trust his lifejacket. Anyway so I paddle over to the boat and ask for assistance, he rushes over and tries to get the bloke on board asking him to swim 2 metres to get onto the ladder of the boat. He didn't want to so he was thrown a rope to get pulled onto the boat, still wouldnt work with us, now hes clinging to the boat for life and needs to get around the outboard, he slips and he still wouldn't swim (starting to think he can't swim) and was drifting away from the boat, luckily he somehow mad it to the ladder, but he wouldn't try to climb it properly. The guy in the boat tried to deadlift him out but being the PT I am, his form would have lead to slipping a disc or hurting himself badly, so I told him to not pull him out for now and just try to get him to get himself out. Eventually after several attempts he made it out of the drink into the boat. Clearly exhausted and covered in cuts from the drums he rested.

Problem 2 was the half submerged tinnie. It had now been caught behind the drums by the current and I tried to push it with the yak, but there was no success there. Krause then jumped in to bail out the water as the old bloke couldn't do it himself. HERE IS THE DAMN KICKER. They were keeping undersized fish in the boat..... AFTER ALL THIS... they were keeping undersized fish. But our problem wasn't that at the moment and after several minutes of bailing, old mate jumps back in and takes control of the boat. He drives over and tries to get his mate into the tinnie, which is obviously a stupid idea because it was still underwater, luckily the bigger boat offered to take him back to the boat ramp. Now that everyone was safe and sound the one in the boat floors it literally 2 metres in front of me, almost capsizing me in the process without offering any thanks to either of us and almost lost control of the boat as he bent over to pick up something. The boat was now sitting 2cm above the water as he sat down and put his weight in the back.

ANYWAY after the successful rescue mission we headed back to the sailing club ramp which took a solid 30min fighting a ton of wind chop... not fun.

After that we went and grabbed burgers near by and tried for some more squid with me picking up 2 more and krause picking up and dropping 1 ;) I can safely say I am now addicted to squidding and will be getting out more to practise!!! LOVE IT. At the end, I had 2 squid and 1 trev for dinner! Quite an eventful day I guess and fairly relaxing I guess. A quick dip in yarra bay was a fair highlight of the day.

Here's a summary of the day incase that was too long a read:

    1. Always wear a life jacket and wear it properly

    2. Know your limits and know your boats limits

    3. Please don't ever get to a stage where you are 120kg+, there are people out there that will help you avoid this or help you recover from this such as myself. It's not even just the weight, it's even more so losing control of you body and the inability of making your body do what you want it to do.

    4. Don't ever risk your life for a fish, especially not undersized fish (DON'T EVER TAKE UNDERSIZED FISH)

I was the old 1969 quintrex mostly on the south side of the channel markers.

I did notice 4 yaks over at molly with the rest of the fleet.

    Anything happen over there?

Saw a couple of yaks also head over to the drums mid morning.

We were 2 of them haha, should've come around to say hi! The other two head off to the drum mid morning when it got quiet.

Our morning was an interesting one.

Upon arrival at moli, someone was hooked up to a shark which took his rat, the shark proceeded to tow him out of the bay LOL. I hooked up to a 42cm trevally, which was kept. Both of us then got onto rat kings up to 62cm and whilst another tinnie brought up another rat, it was circled by another shark.

We proceeded to the drums and saw some huge ass seals, went for one drift then had to perform a rescue mission which lasted the next two hours... That was uh to say the least an interesting morning.
