  1. Hi raiders so I'm planning a trip up to Bennetts beach next weekend with a mate, I'm wondering if anyone with local knowledge could help me or any locals could advise as how the fishing has been recently. Firstly I have searched threw threads here and get a lot of mixed opinions, information and advice on the threads I have read, I'm personally after mulloway myself, I'm not asking for any spots or locations just wondering are there many mulloway to be caught up there? And if so what are best techniques? I plan on catching a few squid later in the week and freezing them and also trying to get some yakkas on the day and keep them live for the night time. Where in the area is best to try gather yakkas as I'm Sydney based and don't know the area? Any help or pointers would be a great help. Also is there many Taylor To be got from the beach as I would settle for live Taylor if I couldn't get yakkas. Basically I want to get some livies out and am not sure as to where to get them. Feel free to pm me any advice and don't be shy commenting 😂. Thanks a lot in advance for anyone who can offer any advice,

    Tight lines 🤙🤙

G'day SMC2010, I got my License last Saturday on the 16th of Feb. I did it with a company as I have no one to get on a boat with close by. It was around $250-280 + $30 (concession) at RMS for the license. They are all in that price bracket. I studied the boating-handbook for about 2 weeks and learnt most of it off by heart. It paid at test time 50/50 questions. Perfect score. Learn the book and you won't have to return after a fail. Treat it like the road mate, slow and steady. I havent had a serious accident on the road since I was a kid and don't want one on the water either. ✔ 👍

    Regards and good luck. PK

    Cheers Pk

My Wife just went through this, there is a couple of ways,

    Option 1>

Read the book or watch the Dvd $18 I think

DO the online quiz until you get 100% a few times

Have a friend with a boat Lic take you out 3 or more times and you do the pre start boat safety checks and then listen to your mate on navigating and docking, have a drive at low speed your self. Complete the log book with Dates and times.

Book in at the RMS and pay the $50 to do the test

    Pay for a 3yr Lic

    Option 2>

Read the book or watch the Dvd $18 I think

DO the online quiz until you get 100% a few times

Book into one of the on water only courses and have then teach you the boat pre start safety and teach you navigating and driving. They will complete a log book for you. Cost $ not sure but well worth it

Book yourself into the RMS $50 do the test

    Pay for Lic

    Option 3

Days or weeks before, Read the book & Do the online quiz multiple times, will help take any stress away

Book into a full course 6hrs Study and test all on the same day

On Water course to complete safety Pre Start and Navigation log book

Head to the RMS with your Certificate and log book and pay for 3 yrs Lic.

If you haven't been around boats much I think Option 3 is the best or Option 2,  its all good and well to do Option 1 but when you have a boat full of mates or kids and there is other boats around, Wind picks up and the swell rises, nothing is more stressful than trying to navigate, drive, watch out for others and try and keep everyone  safe and happy.

Even now sometimes when it gets rough I still have to ask the kids and family members to sit down and be quiet just for a few minutes while I navigate through the harbour. It Gets like a washing machine in there some days.

Cheers Jeff il probably take option three as I would like get it all done in one day no f*%kin about. I have lots off experience from home in boats but that was on lakes where swell was not and issue so I'm pretty much starting from scratch again,

    regards

Back in the day when I got my licence there was no water test, Think for memory I got mine at a fishing/camping show in Penrith, just filled in the questionnaire and licence issued on the spot. A few years later a mate had to go into town and sit a test with a board with waterways images and he had to navigate a toy boat around the coarse as well as answer all the questions, think then you could get 3 wrong, which makes me think that IF you get 3 wrong you don't really know what you are doing ?.

Anyhow this doesn't help you decide which way to go at this present time and I'm afraid I can't help you in that way.

How's the new boat, send some photos via email.

    Frank

Cheers frank Ye I have it stored in a mates yard for a bit I need to get a sparky to just check some wiring after that she's good to go it's an old boat but for a first one I'm sure it will do all I want engine is fairly new and very clean so all in all I think I got a bargin

Didn't do mine through any company, for memory I had to fill in a log & get it signed off so a mate helped me there with the practical on his tinny.

As to the knowledge test well I read the book once then did this quiz over & over & over till I got 100% a few times in a row.

I actually still do the quiz every now & then as a refresher!

There's not a lot of stress involved, get the free book from the RMS or read the rules online, most clubs do a license course now and then too, as do some rescue organisations, be fully conversant with the rules, it's not that hard to learn the rules and sit for the license test at the RMS office.

Thank you Noel I just wanted to know which company is best with least amount of bells and whistles so I can get it done and out of the way, so you recommend rms? Il go to there website do and book it

The motor NEW would be around 7K if pull start tiller and around 8 k if key start and remote steer with tilt etc. Seems like the guy doesn't really know the value of what he has got. OR it's an old riveted boat with old motor etc. Anyway I would help you decide if it's what you want. Just PM me your details and let me know when you want to go.

We used to call the old Suzuki's ENO cause they disolved in water.

    Frank

Will send you a message now thanks very much frank,

Wow for 2K don't expect the queen mary!!! If the motor is a good one that alone would be worth 2K .

I have an old Brooker 14 ' and 30hp merc on old trailer and it looks like a piece of crap ( outside ) but IF I was to sell it I would be asking more than 2K.

You have my interest and I would like to see what is on offer for 2k. Would love to see photos if possible.

    Frank

It does seem to good to be true boat on first glance seems to be ok and integrally ok and yes he said the Motor worth 4K new. I'm not sure what the  catch is. The story is I pass the boat couple times a week parked outside a house and one day I seen old mate in the garden and popped in asking would he sell it or even take me out fishing😂😂 maybe 6 months later he messaged saying he wants it all gone 2k

    1. Parking and Storing the boat (Where and how can you store it safely, especially with COuncils trying to fine boats that don't move

    2. Service records, no proof then it hasn't been done, so factor in a service into the price

    3. water test the boat

    4. You have what they want $$$ he has what you want, So the deal is a two way street

    5. Look at welds and any scrapes on the underside

    6. How old is the motor, is it corroded, is it cold when started, how many hours if known, is it rated the correct HP for the Hull,

    7. HIN (Hull Identification Number) is need to register the boat, if it doesn't have one it will cost $250 from memory to get one.

    8. It suits you now but what about in 12mths, will it be big enough, wide enough, deep enough

    9. What accessories / Safety gear does it come with, will you need to buy anything which will make it more $$$ and might be on the same level as another boat which has all the accessories.

    10. Is it all registered

    11. How is the trailer condition, wheel bearing changed? receipts for service, leaf springs in good condition, take a small hammer and tap the under sides of the frame and axle to see if its almost rusted through.

    12. Tyres on trailer, how old are they (Might look brand new but be 20yrs old, Check for cracks, first trip on main road and get a blow out tyres have a date code stamped on them to check tyre year. Does it have a spare

    13. Can your vehicle tow it safely

    14. Winch and winch wire / rope are they is good condition, Lights on trailer work

    That should get you started.

Mate that is exactly the list I was after I have some of them covered and taught of but a few useful ones in there thank you so much Jeff

Whats the boat? And the price?

I'm not 100% on the boat make but it's a 14ft ally it will come on a trailer and with a 40hp Suzuki. Engine is clean looking from outside and a lowrance sounder didn't ask the model of sounder  he's looking 2k for it, reason for getting rid of it is two grandsons in the last while and hasn't the same time to use it and has caught people trying to steal the motor and battery etc and he just wants rid of it

Frank's offer is very generous BUT a few obvious questions; whats the boat? , make sure you do a REV's check<, used boat market is very competitive so dont buy the first thing you see>

I probably should organise a revs check alright thanks paddy

Once you have a read feel free to ask some specific questions and we will help out where we can.

Boats are like Buses if you miss this one another will pop up in a day or two.

so I guess I’m saying don’t rush and make sure you do a water test not just on the ear muff.

    Thanks Jeff

  17. Hi raiders so I'm getting myself my first boat this weekend and I have just a few questions. Long story short I'm getting a little 14ft boat and engine and trailer. What questions should I be asking the guy I'm buying from? And what should I be looking for defect/damage wise? He seems like a legitimate guy and genuine, I have no reason to doubt him but I want to be put in the right direction as to not buy something that I might regret. I'm assuming I should be asking if boat has ever been damaged or repaired, if the engine has ever giving bother but what are the do's and donts when buying a boat? All help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

I don't really set the hook, maybe I do subconsciously but certainly don't make a big effort of it.  Good sharp hooks seem to work with braid.

Not using a net could be some of it I could not tell you how many fish I've had shake the hook in the net as soon as the pressure is off.  Since changing from bait to soft plastics almost exclusively I have noticed less swallowed hooks (ok none) with soft plastics vs bait.  This also means that a lip hooked fish (on soft plastics) has a better chance of shaking the hook if pressure is let off.   If one is used to fishing with bait and gut hooking lots of fish you can get away with letting the pressure off once in a while and still be hooked up.  Using soft plastics you need to keep the pressure on till in the net.    Good luck.

Cheers bear thanks for the advice

Most likely it was a king - they can't resist live squid. It probably rubbed you off on the rocks. 80lb leader is a good choice but you don't say what your main line is. It's best to fish heavy and let them run as little as possible, eg a 24kg or heavier main line.

So I'm running a daiwa bg 8000 with 80lb braid, 60 leader and my slider rig with 80lb mono. The slider caught itself up maybe 15 meters out so I honestly don't think it had a chance to reef me off the rocks, plus I was over heavy kelp so Another reason I don't think I got reefed.

I've been getting among good numbers of kings over the last three trips,  there have also been many big bronze whalers with the schools of kings. If it was a shark I would consider myself lucky to have it break free ( my back doesn't like messing with sharks).

I find even chassing kings on light gear ( 10lb braid 16lb mono leader) I get a fair amount of time fighting them before they wise up to trying to reef me. Over the last week I've hooked and landed around 30-40 kings on a ci4 3000 stradic and a 2-4kg Daiwa black, only two kings have dusted me in the bottom ( fishing 8-25m water ).

I'm assuming your on a boat with that setup mate I unfortunately have nowhere to keep a boat or I would have one. I'm usually on rock ledges/platforms so landing kings just isn't as easy. I know the back feeling 😂 Have had a few rough rays or at least I think they were rays (take a big run and stop dead for a minute can't budge em and run again) but to be honest your right I don't even want to try land a shark from the rocks and don't want cut leader and leave hooks in them even tho that's what just has to happen sometimes
