It is a good price, I would drop the lb down. Get some floru carbon leader and tie it directly to the braid. You will feel way more bites. You fishing lures or bait
Bait recently, though I want to try with just SPs for my next outing.... I'll aim for lighter lb for this next spool I'm ordering 15lb you reckon or lighter?

Solid stuff. I've fished mono all my life but I'm looking to get into the bream scene a bit more (Oh dear haha! ) Should be gearing up soon, will be nice to try braid after all I've heard about it. Nice fish too, I like Blackwattle Bay if I feel like I need a fish as it's so close for me.
apart from the nonsensical number of dog owners at the park, its a really nice place. I take a few beers, put in my headphones and sit on the water
The braid I used was King cast 20lb, which was admittedly overkill, but decent priced and i like the line diameter

I would suggest losing the swivel that way you can run a long wind-on leader I generally go about 3 metres
I've just had a read about them as I've never used one before - I'll give it a shot. Thanks Dirv

The color of the braid is irrelevant IMO. Red is the first colour of the spectrum that disappears under water.
It's more about matching the right lb braid, with the right lb leader!
Thanks mate

Well done mate! The whizzing sound is what most of us fishos get out of bed for. Love that sound! Nice tailor there!
Cheers scratchie!!!
Thanks scratchie I did a bit of reading / asking around about braid colours; from what I'm told, Red and pink is the most low viz. Is this true or should it not really matter if I'm using a clear leader?
Cheers

Looks like you're right! Found a couple for 50 bucks used. Do you think they're ok for an all rounder for the harbour? It looks like a Shimano Sonic Pro, I got a similar bundle deal a while back but opted for the Sienna 2500.

So I decided to put away the $10 toy rod and Reel (It's done me so well I plan on doing a youtube series with only toy fishing reels around Sydney), and re-rig my Shakespeare Ugly Stik Balance with 20lb kingcast braid to swivel and then Mono leader.
I don't think I'm gonna go back to full mono anytime soon - apart from the whizzing sound of the braid in a fight, the line is amazing

The reel is very affordable shimano sienna 1000.

Thanks Savit
now to figure out what that rod is.... Closest I can find to it is Jarvis Walker Bullseye but the seat doesn't look the same ....

Hey can you tell me what Rod / Reel that is?
-
The missus wanted to go to the park for the afternoon so I stashed a pen reel into her backpack before we took off down to bicentennial park, with small long shanks and fresh prawn.
Lots of small ones (bream, whiting) before I got a decent pull - kept the drag on loose so the rod didn't snap (it's surprisingly sturdy). There was a fair bit of back and forth before I pulled him up
Good times for a 10 buck rod!

Hmmm.. That one looks like it hasn't done a lot of work.
I'd be getting onto that other web site as a guide and I'd be stripping the whole thing down, cleaning it out and re greasing it before I used it.
There's a good chance that the grease has gone off inside.
While you've got it a part you may as well put some carbon fibre drag washers in it and give it a decent drag
That's what I thought too - There's an original tube of grease in the box too but I'll get some fresh stuff.

They were built as a cheaper version of the Penn Sqidder
The plastic spool was provided to make the reel more castable. If your a novice at this type of reel I would suggest that you pull the left hand side plate off and clean the spool bearings and grease them with a marine grease. This will have the effect of slowing the reel down making it easier to cast .
Once you get the hand of casting it you can clean the grease out and replace it with light oil the reel will cast further with less backlash.
If its a black one its a run of the mill Surfmaster. If you've got a maroon one very few were made and it may be worth cleaning it up as a collectors item.
I've also sent you a link which will help you out.
There are all sorts of goodies available for these reels to pimp them up.

Thanks muchly for the info, It's been a great help. Looks like I've got a bit of learning to do, but I really want this as a workhorse reel, and my mate would've appreciated it. thanks again!

Hey guys,
I used to go fishing with a friend's grandfather at Empire bay when I was younger, and when he passed he left me an old drag reel I left in storage. I want to start using it but both the manual is too discoloured to read. It's a Penn Surfmaster 200, 2 spools (the lighter plastic one is currently on it). It's oiled, perfect condition and came boxed with the aluminium spool and reel clamps.
I'm mostly around the harbour so the only other type of stuff I'd do is rock fishing. I was hoping I could get some advice:
- Which spool should I use? I understand that the aluminium spool would cause backlash if I'm not that good at casting (which I'm not)
- how much maintenance would it need, i.e takedown and oiling? every second or third trip?
- What line should I use if I want to focus on casting and avoiding backlash?
- What length rod should I aim for (from what I read I should be aiming for no shorter than 2.7m)?
Thanks in advance, even if to point me in the right direction for looking for info. I know potatoes about potatoes.
UPDATE: Photos attached. I haven't disassembled it yet given I want to do that when I follow the guide I found (Thanks Crossfire63!) when I open it up to work on it as opposed to just doing it for photos. Also I need to be careful of a couple of small parts that apparently spring out when I do.
Thanks again
