  1. Nothing beats keeping it simple, there is no secret rig that will catch fish. A swivel with a small sinker above it works well, a tiny ball sinker running right to the hook works, and the best of all, light line, no sinker and natural live/fresh bait.

  2. A successful team is a whole range of things, starting right at the top, at board room level, if the “front office” is not operating as a solid unit, then it just filters down to the coach and the team. Good run clubs, have great leaders, good coaches don’t just tell players how to play, they need to know each players personality and how to get the best out of them, not only as players, but as people and a team, that’s why great players are not always great coaches, and also why great coaches were not always great players. Look at Bellamy, Bennett, Robinson and even way back to Jack Gibson, they took young “boys” and taught them to be “men” if you get what I mean? The Tigers are a mess as far as a club is concerned, officials sacked, coaching stuff in and out, just like the Bulldogs a couple of years ago, and it’s only now slowly getting to somewhere near “normal”. Rugby League, like all sports, to operate at the top level is not just a matter of buying good players, the Dragons are another example of poor top management, sacking coaches, getting new ones, players wanting to leave, it’s a big jigsaw that needs to be carefully assembled.

dont need to remind me how bad the tigs were last night. it hurts 🤣

The first 15 minutes they looked OK, then just crumbled.

  4. Yep,  even a fan since early primary school, played local league for years, back in the “old days” At the risk of being assassinated……a Roosters fan forever.

  5. An OK boat back in their day, just another pressed tinny like they were back then. Make sure you check for any cracking if the boats been used a lot, remember it’s 20 years old now. It will be fine in the ocean, don’t expect a super soft ride, but driven responsibly, it will be fine.

  6. Watched the replay this morning, it certainly could have gone either way, pretty miserably night by the looks of the TV, plenty of rain.

  7. Some pretty serious rain last, take care driving around, don’t take chances. I hope everyone came out OK with no house damage. The rain was very heavy last night, lots of suburbs flooded and roads cut off around here, stay safe, looks like it’s eased off a bit now.

I went to the game last night. Quietest crowd ever. Not much to cheer about.

NSW needs the Souths trio back ( imo )

Sydney games are like that, it’s a dead old venue, I went last year for the first time in a long while, and it didn’t change my mind, never going again, even with free tickets, now a game at Suncorp…….OH yeah, bring it on, best venue, best atmosphere, best city input and and great crowd.

  9. Big Bream around jetties and so on can be very tricky, to be successful consistently requires some stealth, light line and very early morning starts, or late afternoon. Most fish around public wharves and the like see hundreds of hooks a day, most with an old black Prawn and 20lb line, they got big, because they are smart…..you just have to be smarter! Lures will often be the best option, because they will keep the Toads and stuff away, and if you can cast to the jetty (as distinct from on the jetty) your chances seem to be much better, but, you will lose lures, if you’re not, then your not casting close enough! Be patient and work out what works and what doesn’t. I personally think that places away from jetties are way better, they might be harder to access, but the results will be better, just because you can see fish doesn’t mean they will take a bait.

  10. Done similar hundreds of times. We used to just put the cooker on the bait board, right at the back, out in the breeze,  ever had a drama. Sometimes we would cook sausages at home, then take them on the boat so they only need a minute in a pan to heat up, some pre buttered bread and you’re set.

Weve used them before, the crabs walk on top of it and once they settle in, you quickly lift the net and get get tangled, though you have to be quick. Found those drop pots to be better though they work. Found them quite ok for blues swimmers.

I think you have your traps mixed up, Witches hats like the one pictured do not require a quick pull up, you take it nice and slow with them, the two ring lift nets require a quick pull in.

  12. Good tips but……a burley pot down this way will see you swarmed by all sorts of “stuff” from Slimies to those little fish with the white spot on them, Mados, Jackets etc making fishing just about impossible.

  13. Just drive around wide of Windang Island, look for a rise from sand to reef, or drift for Flathead untill you get snagged, then take a mark, this is the spot to fish for Snapper. If early mornings are not your thing, try afternoons, anchor up and fish with about 12lb line, a small sinker to match the current, use half a Pilchard on about a 4/0 hook and cut Pilchards into smaller pieces to use as burley, just a piece regularly. After a few outings you with start to work out how to catch them regularly. The North side of Windang is good in the summer, fishing in closer (about 20m of water) the Snapper feed on the outgoing tide from the lake, fresh Prawns work well there. It’s all gravel/rubble bottom so you will need to look around for patches of hard reef to anchor on.

  14. We really had no idea what was going on, the captain made an announcement that we would be not going to New Caledonia (Lifou and Noumea) because of political unrest and concerns for safety. The only “facts” we got were vague news and people who had contact with relatives that told them what was happening. The cruise line were very good about it (as usual) if it was during summer it might have been different with all the other seasonal ships cruising, but, as it stands there is only 3 ships based here, so plenty of options, just had to fit them into the schedule.

The traffic in Port Vila is a hoot, battered old cars beeping horns huge pot holes and just driving anywhere, we got an old van with a couple of other people, it had a broken window, no seat belts, ripped seats and the driver said “as long as you stay near your side of the road, it’s all OK” he spied a couple walking back to the ship, and just drove up on the footpath to cut them off and said he would take them back for $2….. as it was hot and they still had a couple of Ks to go, they jumped in too. It’s common to see utes with a dozen people in the back, the back streets are pretty shady, reasonable safe during the day (I think) the van driver told us there was no dole or government “handouts” you either did some kind of work, or hoped to pick up tourists when a ship is in, and drive them around all day, he reckons some park there for a day before the ships come in, to get a good spot.

Lots of these places are beautiful if you just get out of the main port area, but you need to be aware of shonky scammers, and the streets are lined with seedy looking locals, we have never had and trouble, but, you can see it’s right there. The duty free shop is so cheap, a friend asked to get a bottle of “Gentleman Jack” I got him 1.5L for $40 which supposedly here is well over $150. A carton of Cigarettes are $37, being a non smoker it means nothing to me, but, that is very cheap.

On my fishing “charter” we got lots of common Sweetlip of various sizes (all kept) lots of other colourful reef species, one new tour I saw was hand feeding Giant Trevally which I will do next trip, there’s a bit of new huts and seats being built on Mystery Island, locals rent out plastic chairs, beach umbrellas, snorkeling gear, braid hair, offer massages, sell coconuts cut open, cans of cool (not cold) beer are $10….all to make a few dollars to survive.

Good that the cruise line tried to make up for the enforced changes which weren't their fault. Funny you mention the rickety boats, I went on them too and caught heaps of fish which were donated to the locals. Some rugged tackle though...rusty hooks, 9 inch by half inch bolts for sinkers and hand lines. Memorable times, especially hurtling through the outer reef to the fishing grounds.

    Cheers, bn

Yep, that about covers the tackle, but, this trip a couple of boats had some cheap rods and reels sticking out of rod holders, looks like technology is catching up…….I saw a couple of new boats unloaded off a barge they are about 20’ long, super narrow and just wooden planks for seats with a kind of windscreen cab combined setup, pull start 40hp motors. Most are used for food type fishing and basic transport, and taking tourists anywhere they want to go when a ship is in. There is no safety precautions or gear, you just pay and pray……

  16. Well, I’m home, seems some political stuff going on in Noumea, so both ports there were cancelled for safety reasons, but, we got an extra day at Mystery Island and an added “fun day at sea” which is the cruise lines way of say we are going home extra slow, but, we did get a cash refund, and a day of Prawns, Mussels, Sushi and other nice things to eat, so all in all, it was OK. Not too sure of the details of New Caledonia riots, but gossip is it revolves around locals having the right to vote, no idea if that’s true, just what we were told. Did lots of diving, some fishing, met some new friends and had a great time, great weather……bring on August 13th when we head to Fiji.

  17. Just got back from holidays and saw this, most whipper snipers are a curse, difficult to start, cantankerous evil devices, produced to kill healthy fathers……..that said, years and years ago a bought an Echo straight shaft, and (touch wood) it has been the best one ever, starts like a dream, idles well and with the aluminium head that you just put a single piece of line through, it works a treat, no idea if I just got a good one, but, it’s a dream to use.

  18. Todays the day, packed and ready to head to the train station, might be a bit wet heading out of Sydney this afternoon, have a look at the 4PM news on ch7 and see me “sail away” in the background. See you all in a couple of weeks.

Enjoy, Noel. We visited Vanuatu and Lifou on a cruise and really enjoyed it. Have you done the leap of faith into the pool in the cave on Lifou?

I snorkeled in New Caledonia and had the biggest GT pass right in front of my face, just inches away. 😎

    Have a great time!

Yep,  been to the caves lots of times, good diving at Lifou if you’re game enough to go out a bit deeper than a few metres, lots of big fish and great coral. There is a very nice beach too, you can take a bus to the other side of the island, it’s fantastic.
