  1. I spent the afternoon on the George's river last week, managed a few nice bream exploring some new grounds on hb's and sp's and then this nice flatty off the top in 10 cm of water! The surface action has been insane lately.

Interestingly I have only caught Blue spot Flathead in the George's and hacking, any thoughts?

  2. After moving to the Sutherland shire I don't often get to fish my favourite spots where I used to live on the northern beaches, but I got a chance to fish on sunday morning.

I rocked up(pun intended) to one of my favourite ledges at sunrise timed perfectly with a major solarlunar period and an approaching lowtide and started spinning.  I started of with a big stick bait hoping to tempt an early morning king fish, after about half an hour I decided to switch to my lighter rod with a home made metal lure on it. 15 minutes later I hooked up but the 16 lb leader was definitely not enough as it snapped as soon as it touched the rocks. So I decided to go back to the larger rod but change the stickbait to a metal. It didn't take too long before I was on again and after a short but intense fight I had the fish almost at my feet, I was licking my lips thinking of all the sashimi I would be enjoying with my daughter, I waited for a wave and dragged the big bonnie (guess between 2-3 kgs) up on to the ledge, but as soon as I did the lure popped out of his mouth and he flipped back in to the water!

Can't win them all I suppose, at least I got to have the fight and It has definitely reignited my passion for pelagics.

has anyone else got on to the big bonnies lately?

Good job getting a feed in not the best conditions. I went for a flick for bass and they were biting but the wind was killing me in an open valley and I lost everyone in reeds....

Do you ever fish up around lugarno/Illawong?

What part of sydney do you do your bass fishing mate?

Mate the best luck i have ever had on henry Lawson with the flatties in particular is walking out waste deep at the mouth of Kelso creek casting out into the channel there, it's at Kelso Beach or some call it Revesby Beach.

If you're interested in practicing your technique do your double flicks and all the like but in the time i have been fishing there i have never caught anything but Flathead.

So my advice would be the hell with technique and just use a very slow retreive maybe a small flick every now and again to stir up some sand.

Try to resist the urge to fish from the more appealing sandy area that all the once a year fisho's fish from because you will for most of your efforts get absoulutely nothing from here.

Use the muddy bank to the very right of the beach go 3 hours before the low tide and have fun be patient, maybe see you there sometime.

I honestly reckon i could slow retrieve a hook in the sand and catch a flathead sometimes...

    Cheers Mick, Good Luck!! :1prop:

Hey mate, fished there today. Tide wasnt ideal but i got one little flatty on a hard bod. Do you still live local? Would be good to fish with someone with heaps of local knowledge.... cheers

Fished Como for 2 hours Sunday morning. Very few bites/downs and no little fish, ended up with 2 fish mid 30's and 3 just under legal.

Also took my 2 year old boy fishing at gymea bay on Sunday arvo. No legal size fish but heaps of downs and small fish perfect for keeping a little boy entertained, he loves watching the float and making patty cakes (sand burly) to throw in the water.

I live in gymea and would to chase some blackies, where abouts do you go? Feel free to PM me!

you could try emailing Sydney Water - they'd know

before fishing near the Lane Cove weir was banned, the overflow there was an ace bream spot after rain.

    Great idea mate!

There are plenty of canals around the inner west of Sydney. With the recent/ current rains they will be flowing. Earthworms are a gun bait. They get flooded out of the ground and washed into the drains- canals and the fish are just waiting for them.

Can you share any of their locations mate? Im looking for the drains themselves

This response does not meet your estuarine criteria but could do much worse than the entrances to lagoons tucked in behind many Sydney ocean beaches, or other storm water out flows in similar spots.

Good rainfall will open the lagoons and all sorts of bait fish and other stuff will flow out and in to the nearest gutter where all your usual candidates will be waiting.

I remember hearing stories of my great uncle fishing from the southern sydney cliff tops above the old ocean outfalls before modern sewerage treatment plants came in. Back then storm water and sewer were all mixed together and dumped out, schools of tailor used to be in such a frenzy that an unbaited set of gangs would get you a few bucket loads of fish in a big rain event.

Yeah mate, similar theory but in the estuaries the bream love the run off from a rain and sit and wait for bugs and bait to be sucked out! I know of a few but trying to find some more!

  13. Im looking for any storm water drains that flow in to any of the sydney systems. Or any tidal lakes that have drains that run out into the main body of water. Sydney harbour, port hacking, georges river etc

    No worries.

heres my current favourite lure, the tailor and Bonito go crazy over it and you can get the double hookup on one lure!

they can't throw assist hooks either. The big hook on the tail can't be thrown either it's normally pierces the fish just below the eye.

Whats also great is you can just wind the thing medium fast or faster you don't need to flick your rod around to impart movement.

i just tie a doubled line uni knot to the solid ring with the assist hook.

    Is that a storm mate?
