  1. Hello,

So I was looking for some squid grounds between seal rocks and forster. I found myself at Elizabeth  Beach yesterday scampering over the rocks to the point.

Turned a big boulder and 3 metres from the waves about 2 meters high I almost stepped on a coastal taipan. ( well that was my id) happy to be corrected.

So just a friendly reminder that it is snake season and to be aware.

I have never seen a snake so close to the ocean. But it makes sense. They can swim.

He was very scared and did not come at me at all. My foot was about 10cm from his face. Humbling experience as I thought it was a brown at first glance. Almost dove off the ledge I was on. Lol

  2. I am up in Bulahdelah at the moment.

I have been exploring the beaches and am good with most places.

I want information if anyone can help about the fishing in wallingat national park river.

Has anyone fished in the system. It is open to the ocean but at the camp spot it is a few kms back up river.

I'm sure there will be mullet and bream but any advice would be appreciated.

I am heading for a camp and fish/ kayak in a few days. I will give it a go no matter what. I was just curious if anyone has some info.

    Cheers in advance.

Sorry for my lack of posts. I will be starting again soon.

  3. Hey guys and girls.

I have been very busy. Long time no posting or fishing.

Went for a camp session Friday and SAT night. Found this guy between my toes while twisting for Pippis.

Can anyone Id this. Is it a juvenile flathead or is it a baby grinner or star gazer. That my guess. Anyone have ideas ???

  4. The reason (as i understand it) is that they can collect toxins from algae blooms which can cause serious illness. Something like that. I do not want to risk it. Also back in the day they were over harvested to an extreme.  Best to follow guidelines I think.

In saying that I have seen many ethnic families carrying out plastic bags full.

I have warned them in the past to no avail or I end up getting told off 😒

  5. Morning,

    bit of a late report.

Went for a quick fish Sunday evening at Umina beach using pipis as bait. Only there for under an hr.

I have been lazy and just running a Mustad Worm hook and ball sinker with 8lb leader and using pipis as bait.

Arrived just as the sun was setting and near high tide. Wind had stopped and you could see a storm about to roll over box head. Conditions looked perfect and what a trip it was. First cast on the little flick stick and hooked a good salmon. Finally getting a fish with some weight to test the new rod Daiwa td black "Mundie Mauler".

So much fun.  Some really good runs and jumping out of the waves made for a sight.
Salmon put up a great fight and this one was no different. Managed to get him on the sand and quickly dispatched him and back out for another. The next bite must have been at least twice the size. The runs this fish was going on had me cheering. Had me running up and down the beach following this monster. In the end over the period of the fight the hook straightened and I lost the fish. Dam it. I was gutted but was content with knowing how much grunt this little rod has.
I know most people don't rate Aussie Salmon as a good feed but I love them.

Cooked this fish 3 ways. Thai Style ( coriander, ginger and lime ), beer battered and panko crumb with chilli flakes. Went down a treat with some mash potato and asparagus.
We had the beach to ourselves. Rain had all but cleared the beach.

Took an ink impression of the fish before filleting it up. First time trying this and I think I need some more practice. 😆

    Cheers

  6. Lakelad,

The 2500 is a treat to use as the reel is the original shimano model so a lot heavier but sits well and is actually quite balanced.

I have used it with 3 reels on it.

    2500 and 4000 Symetre

best suited in my opinion with a 3000 daiwa.

I just use the 2500 for my bait fishing lately. One rod, back pack and rod holder. nice and simple.

This is the old stock I believe. They have just upgraded so stores were getting rid of them for 100 bucks.
I have thrown heavy metals and poppers up to 80 grams with ease and down to 10 gram lures and soft plastics and I cannot fault it. With heavy stuff I would have liked a longer butt, other than that I think it is a very good rod.

Great to use and they look amazing.

    👍

Nice job. Bait is good sometimes, especially if you feel lazy, toss a lump of food out and sit back and relax.

Umina a great area beach to fish as well as swim. My beach spot for summer. Worth the 90 mins each way.

    Cheers motiondave,

I'm lucky I live close to the beach.

Umina beach is a great place all year round.

Nice to sit back and wait for a fish or 2 with a cold beer 🍺

A Rockhopper fishing on a beach, with lures then with bait.

    That's what I call versatility !

Beautiful fish you got there - I'll take quality over quantity any day.

I wonder why the fish would not go for a lure and did go for the bait?

Can you get a lure that looks like an injured pipi? Lol you can tell I ain't a lure fisho.

I'm not patient enough to go beyond the basics of bait - seems twitching a rod every 2 seconds, cast after cast is too much like hard work. I would get RSI of the shoulder before I caught a fish.

Fresh fish over coals - now that's what I'm talking about. I just had breakfast and I'm hungry already!

    Hey Keflapod,

Got to be versatile hey, 😊

I'll take them as I can get them.

When in doubt I go back to basics or i go hungry hehehe
If I am not getting a hit on a lure....out comes the bait or I gather it.

I have been fishing large hardbodies hoping for a bigger fish. You are right lots of work.

    My patience is lacking

And I'm new to coals so it is a great new taste. Cant get enough.

    Cheers

  9. After weeks of fishing with hard body lures for not much at all i decided to go back to basics.

Late start. Fished from 11 to 1pm. Landed 4 good fish. All caught on fresh pipis.

Nice going back to bait and breaking the long spell between bringing home some fresh fish.

Caught two very good whiting. Both kept.

Also caught two bream. Kept one and released the other.

I don't like keeping big bream and the one released was 40cm. So he earned his freedom. Fat fish.

    Great fun on light gear.

I recently purchased a diawa td black "mundi mauler" 7ft one piece flick stick. Matched with my original 2500 Fi symetre.

    Spooled with 16lb siglon braid.

This combo is a dream and can really put a lot of pressure on fish.

Running 8 lb leader today. This is very smooth combo. Casts a mile and worked a treat.

Looking forward to fresh fish over coals tomorrow.

    Cheers

  11. Hi All,

I have been looking into a powered skiff.

The model I was looking at is a Power Fish 14 made by Stealth.

They are not being brought into Oz anymore.

Does anyone have more information or know a way around this or any other alternatives ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards

I have caught the red cods there, nothing special. Beautiful spot though.

It is a great spot. very beautiful. nice coastal walk also.

I have caught a few fish there in the past. Salmon and tailor and heaps of squid all around this time of year but this year nothing.........the curse of 2020 perhaps? 🤪

    Cheers mate

  13. Afternoon All,

Went bait fishing at the point, 7 to 11 this morning.
Not much of anything to report.
Port Jackson sharks out wide on frozen squid and pilchards
Tried for some squid but they have been a no show for a while now.
    Tested out some new jigs.
Anyone else had luck at this spot for squid ??
Several spear fishermen around.......didn't see a fish landed
    Beats working 😁
    Cheers
