no kings there port breakwall or hill60 get kings landbase

Why is that? I always wondered. The Breakwall leads to the main ocean Tasman Sea I think. I would of thought Kingfish would come from there to the Breakwall.

And from Google Maps. Windang Breakwall is split into 2. I am talking about the breakwall which is nearest to the main ocean next to Windang Island. Is this breakwall accessible?

  2. Hi guys,

    1) Windang Breakwall - wondering if this place holds Kingfish, Mulloway and Squid?

    2) Windang Breakwall - If I wanted to fish more near the main ocean which would be the best place to fish? Can someone show me some pics? Also what would be good wind and swell for safety and comfort?

    3) Is there any other small breakwalls around Wollongong to Port Kembla area where it is easy to access the water without those big concrete and rock boulders?

    4) Is there any estuary system to fish land-based around that area? Please suggest a few.

    Thanks

  3. Hi all,

    1) I am looking at getting braid, below are the things I am looking for. Can anyone who has experienced alot of braids please recommend the best for me?

    - 20LB - 8 Strand Braid

    - Tangle-free (Do not want any braid that tangles, helicopters, tip coils)

    - Must not be limpy soft type of braid

    - Strong and high quality

    - Does not break and fray easily

    - Good castability

    2) Also another question not related to above. Does anyone know what is the difference between Shimano Kairiki Braid and Shimano Kairiki SX Braid? And which is the better one?

    Thanks

    1) couple of suggestions , add twitches and pauses rather than a straight slow roll retrieve, scent can make a difference, go as light on the leader as you can

    2) sounds like your set up might be to heavy for the lures you're casting, a light rod in the 1-3 kg or 2-4 kg range 2000- 2500 size spin reel loaded with good quality light braid in the 6-8lb range

    3) what sort of hardbodies are you using? get the best quality lures you can afford, if you give me an idea of your target species and areas your casting I can give you a few suggestions of specific lures and retrieve styles

target species like flathead and tailor which aren't as fussy get your confidence up then move onto the tougher species like whiting and bream

    don't give up

    Dave

I have tried everything with lures all the loop knots, clips.

I have tried from stickbaits, poppers, jerkbaits, crankbaits all from big to small sizes. I also have done many retrieve techniques.

My target species are mainly Bream, Flathead, Bonito, Jewfish, Kingfish.

Are you saying that the lighter the line the further my lure will cast?

I am currently using 15lb mono and leader. With a Daiwa Shinobi rod paired with 4000 Stradic. I might try using my egi rod to see if it improves anything.

  5. Hey FR,

I have bought many hard lures in the past and never had any luck on them. I have a couple questions if anyone could help me out, appreciated!

    1) When using hard lures why is it so hard to get any fish action bite from it? I sometimes see fish follow my lure when reeling it in but they do not bite or commit?

    2) How can I get a good casting distance from a light lure? I would usually need 15g-30g lure to cast a good far distance. Wondering how do people with only 5g lures like the Sugapens cast far? Whenever I cast lures they don’t go much distance at all.

    3) Any other tips and techniques on fishing with lures are welcome?

  6. Hey Fishos,

I am trying to find some good spots to explore for landbased fishing around the Mosman/Middle Harbour/The Spit area. I want to stay away from The Spit bridge though as never had much luck there and too much people there from all the hype.

Could anyone recommend some spots to explore? I’m looking for land based spots which include:

    - Nice open deep water

    - Can get live bait and fish at the same spot. Fish like Yakkas, Bream, Jews, Flatty, Kingfish etc.

    - Also good for squid.

Thanks would be nice for the exact location or general area if don’t want to give exactly. Much appreciated.

  7. Hi I have a couple questions for all knowledgble Rod builders.

    1) Just curious, do all commercial rod companies assemble their guides onto the rod stick all using thread? Or are there companies that don’t use thread at all and use something else?

    2) Are all rod guides repairable? If I get it repaired and they use the thread/epoxy technique will it still be the same as factory or would I have problems later on with it breaking etc? Or is it exactly the same procedure how bigger companies install/repair their guides? Just worried about it affecting my rod performance and longetivity as it is expensive rod.

    3) My rod is an EGI carbon fiber rod in the middle of the rod 2 guides have fallen off causing the rod’s black casing mould which holds the guides in place has cracked. Is this repairable?

For the basic shore jigging technique have a look at this video. For my shore jigging I use slow blatt jigs and Shore Gun rods although there are many other brands. What jig weight and size  you are going to use depends on your rod rating. I have two rods, one for jigging with 10g-20g jigs and second one for 40g-60g jigs.

Be prepared to lose a lot of jigs if you fish a very snaggy bottom.

I already know most basics. How are you ment to work the fast fall jigs?

Also I have a micro jig which is 30 grams and heavily weight at the back so it falls really fast feels like only 1 second hang time. When I pitch it up it falls back down really fast how do I work this type of jig?

  9. Hey people, I am new to micro jiggin don’t know much but have picked it up since top water lure never work for me don’t know why. But have had some good luck with micro jigs. Got few things I like to know.

    1) For land based Breakwalls etc. what range weight jigs should I be using?

    2) I have bought some jigs but the action are all different. Can someone tell me what kind of different type of jigs there is and how the action are for each?

    3) Some jigs I bought they just fall quick I was looking for one that flutters at a steady pace. How do I tell which one is that?

    4) The way I work the jigs is I let it sink then I jerk the rod quite hard about 3 lifts then let it sink and lay on the floor for awhile. I get bites like this. But what if I’m chasing fish that dont eat on the pause. What should I do?

    5) I see people on boats they use the technique where they jig really fast jerking the rod non stop and wind. Is this technique can also be applied with micro jigging or it is different?

Thanks sorry for the rookieness. Look forward to learning few things ?

It may be time to rethink your fishing and consider the seasons.  You should find out what winter species are common in the areas you fish and change your tactics to suit.  Winter species include Luderick (black fish), John Dory, trevally, salmon, squid and snapper.   Some of these may be difficult from shore.   Good luck.  Ron

I believe this is the major part. Went on another trip today around Lane Cove River and Sydney Harbour all land based and not even a nibble. I don’t know where are all the fish in Winter go. Does anyone know? If I was to go fishing at a land based spot in Winter where would be the best place that the fish are at or migrated to?

During Summer the usual spots I will catch something but Winter has changed everything....

  11. Hey Raiders,

I have been trying and trying but my luck and effort is running out so I’m here to find out what is going on. We have had 10 plus trips ending up with no fish at all only couple crabs and squid.

We usually fish land based Sydney estuary like wharfs, piers and reserves. We usually fish from 11am till late midnight or early mornings. You can say all nighter sort of trip. We have a couple rods in water with bottom bait ranging from all sorts and sometimes fresh squid that is caught. And another rod just using hard lures or plastics which we don’t know much about and just learning. Yet with all this effort of trying different things we have caught nothing and mostly no bites. What is it we are doing wrong? We used to catch fish during Summer but now it is like dead. Cannot believe it has been more than 10 trips with nothing.

Can anyone help me? What are we doing that is wrong? Where are all the fish, where have they migrated to? What is the cause for this dead silent trips? Where to fish land based for next trips to get more success?

    Thanks.

  12. 1) Is this true or completely false? Does Shimano void warranty if you use different brand of oil and grease on their reels? I also heard that Shimano don’t make oil anymore so I am using Daiwa oil and Okuma grease is this all okay for warranty?

    2) When removing old grease and oil to apply new. What is the best way to remove?

    3) I usually clean my reel with water and a damp cloth. Was wondering is there a better way to remove the salt?

    Thanks FRaiders.

  13. I went with the 5000 TP today. I felt the weight and it feels good to use for all day. What do you guys think of the 8000 to use all day? Abit too heavy?

Also I have some stuff I need to find out:

    1) I got the brand new TP and when I spin it doesn’t seem smooth as described. Also when spinning it will make abit of a spinning whirling noise. Is this normal for new reels? Will it be better once broken in and how long does this take?

    2) My Stradic 4000 feels much smoother and lighter when spinning the handle. Is this normal for it to be more smooth than the TP? Anyone have the same two reels can you tell me your experiences.

Paranoid at the moment need some clearance lol

Hey bud , read my reply to your questions on the Stradic 4000-you can land a 50 kg fish on 6 kg line if your gear is up to scratch- BUT reels are not winches- stop worrying about max drag pressure etc etc- a 1 M king weighs about 8-12 kgs depending on condition etc, same with a jewie- the drag is meant to release line under pressure- not be locked up, as to your original question the Twinpower is a fine reel but you will get better bang for your buck with the Saragosas- as for size- are you mainly land based or shore based- what method of fishing are you using?bait/lures/trolling- how about you tell us a bit more about your situation and we can give you some more specific help- how big are you?how much experience do you have etc etc

How much different in size is the 5000 to 8000? Is it just deeper spool or the whole reel is abit bigger?

More info: I already made my mind on the Twin Power. I am mainly going to be land based and inshore boating. Chasing metre plus Kingfish. Occasionally go offshore to target big game fish. I will be using the reel all day so what size is good for the task?

I will be using stick baits and poppers. Also use bait on float and bottom bashing. And live baiting aswell.

I already have a light setup for smaller fish which is a Stradic CI4+ 4000. But overall my main target with TP are big Kings. Would a 5000 be enough? Should I get a 8000 later on for when I dedicate more trips going offshore?

  15. In the process of buying the Shimano 5000 Twin Power SW yet still very uncertain of the things I need to know. I will have a couple of questions.

    1. Contemplating 5000 and 8000 size but need help. Will the 5000 size be enough for the fishing I will do? Would 8000 be too heavy and big for all day use?

I will be doing a lot of inshore, land base and occasional offshore game.

The fish I will be targeting inshore are metre Kingfish and Mulloway.

Offshore game I will be targetting fish like Mackerel, Tuna, Sailfish etc.

    1. Would 13KG max drag be enough for the above targets? Or is this more than enough?

    1. Just a rough estimate what would be the weight of the fish this 5000 reel could be able to handle and catch? Would I be able to catch fish around 20-50kg mark?

    1. Just want to know if this reel is made from Japan only?

    Thanks sorry for the rookieness.

Line strength and drag capacity have little to do with the size of fish you can catch with an outfit. You can catch 1m+ jewfish on 6lb braid with 2lb of drag and you can catch leatherjacket on 100lb braid with 40lb of drag if you wanted. The difference is how you can play the fish. When you are fishing light line and drag you can't just pull the fish towards you, because the line will snap or the drag will stop you from getting any ground. You will have to use your rod to lead the fish to swim towards you, and slowly tire the fish out until it's safe to bring it to you. When you are fishing heavy line and drag you can just crank the fish up no worries, but I would say it's just not as fun. The 2 problems with light line fishing is that it's easy to get spooled, and it's easy for fish to wrap you around something and snap you off. If you really think about it, if you are fishing in a perfect infinite sand flat with nothing sharp or pointy and have unlimited line, you could catch a marlin on 10lb line, because there'd be nowhere for it to go. But unfortunately such a perfect marlin filled sand flat doesn't exist, so you need to adapt your gear to your situation.

The general rule with drag is to set it to about 1/3rd of your line breaking strain, so you could go up to 50-60lb with that reel, though I wouldn't recommend it because that's not what a 4000 size reel is designed to hold. With 50lb braid there are very few species you couldn't catch with a bit of patience, so you don't have to worry about catching too big of a fish. The only issue would be cooking your drag washers, which is extremely rare, and getting spooled, which is also uncommon if you know what you are doing and haven't hooked the Queen Mary 2.

    Thanks for the info,

So basically if my max drag is 12kg it does not mean the maximum weight fish I can catch is 12kg right? Because you have your line, drag, rod to compensate? So you can catch a monster with the reel?

Is 12kg more than enough? What fish would make you use that much of drag scenario wise?

  17. 1 hour ago, JonD said:

My c4 stradic 4000 has landed kings to 90cm and long tail tuna around 12 kg. It's my opinion those fish are pushing it a bit but as long as you are over clear ground and using around 4 kg of the drag you can land such fish.

So u caught those fish with only using 4kg drag? So did it perform smoothly and easy with that drag on near a meter King?

Also has anyone ever tested the max drag on a big fish? How did it perform or it still perform smooth or did it struggle?

  18. Hey all got a few questions for all you Stradic lovers.

    1) The max drag on the reel says 11KG. Does this mean it can only catch 11KG fish? Or how much would it be able to handle?

    2) Would a Stradic CI4+ be able to handle a meter Kingfish and Jewfish easily? And when would it struggle?

    3) Just a curious question for Stradic owners. List your personal best caught with your Stradic.

    Hey Spool,

I had my two reels serviced at Shimano about a year ago. I took them there myself to save $16 postage. They did a great job. Here's a link for info. I also had one done at the local tackle shop but I wasn't happy with them, that's why  I went to Shimano the next time.  I think tackle shops can be a bit hit and miss with service ie. some good and some bad

    http://www.shimanofish.com.au/content/fish/oceania/au/en/homepage/Service_centre.html

Give them a all  if you need more info.

    cheers

    Richard

Thanks. I will send it in to Shimano. If I send it in how long will it take for them to receive it and how long till they will start working on it?

Also what did you have serviced? What was the total price once u got it back? And if I let them clean and rebuild would it come back under $100?

  20. The only problem is the drag not making noise. It is silent. Can someone please tell me how to fix it?

Other than that there everything seems to work fine. But under the rotor there is sand stuck in the gap as the pictures I have posted. All I need to do is take the rotor off to access the gap to take the sand out. Just want to clean it. Does anyone know how I can access the gap underneath the rotor?

If all fails then I would take it to the shop for servicing but I would want to try cleaning it first since nothing major besides the drag click and sand that needs cleaning before it starts to eat it’s way.

  21. Hey guys,

Been having a really bad day. Today I dropped my Stradic Ci4+ in the water at the beach left submerged for about 15 seconds and then got sand all over it. I just recently bought this reel a month ago aswell. Do you rekon it will be alright with some cleaning?

    1) Also when I was pulling apart trying to clean I realized the drag noise does not click. Does anyone know how to fix this? I will post a picture.

    2) And does anyone know how to open the bottom for cleaning it has some sand stuck inside. Also will include picture.

    PICTURE LINK: https://m.imgur.com/a/UVIT3vg

    3) Also if I take to Shimano how much would it cost for servicing and how long would it take? And for example if my reel got really damaged from water could they fix it to working order again replacing all the parts etc like a rebuild?

Thanks hope can help me out been really stressed out that my reel won’t ever be the same.

  22. I am using 20LB braided line.

Just bought Black Magic rolling swivel with breaking strain of 28KG but on the packet it says suited 2-3kg line.

Is this swivel still okay for my line? I will be targeting small Kings, Jews, Snapper, Trevally
