  1. Hi Guys,

I've been fishing for the last year from wharfs and easy land based areas in the harbour areas and have had some good success and learnt a ton in that time period, however this weekend after long deliberation myself and my mate have decided to go to the northern beaches to have a fish on the beach itself, e.g Dee-why.

    1.   Can anyone advise a good decent spot to head to

    2.  Best rig setups and bait to use.

    3. Low or high tide preferences ?

    My outfits for the weekend.

Reel: Shimano Stella FJ 5000  (30lb Braid / 50lb Leader)
    Rod: Daiwa Sandstorm 10'6 (6-12kg)

Reel: Shimano Bait Runner 6000D (30lb Braid / 50lb Leader)
Rod: Shimano Aerowave Graphite Surf 10ft 5-8kg

    Reel: Diawa BG 2500 (10lb braid / 20lb Leader)
    Rod: Crucis 7ft (2-5kg)
    (Used catching my bait)

I would like to thank everyone in advance for your help and advise!!!

If you want a fish that pulls like a freight train in winter then- drum rolllllllll- blue groper, lots of them . nice flat sea conditions around the ocean ledges- but learn a bit about the ocean rocks first.

Sound like a awesome fish to add on to my short list hahaha
I really think l should land a few more salmon or tailor first then move on to some hard fish!!

Thanks for your advice - If you ever go for a grooper but let me know l will PM my details always keen for a fish mate

    Hey buddy

This time of year kings are quite scarce. Your better off targeting salmon and tailor which are the winter species.

How you rig up depends on where you are fishing but a reliable method is to have the live yakka out under a float with sliding depth rig. This method really will put you in with a chance for kings salmon and tailor.

To catch yakkas its very easy...berley hard at any wharf in Sydney very early, preferably before sunrise. Drop a sabiki rig or unweighted hooks size 10 or 8 and u should have a few in no time

    Hey Mate,

Yeah last night l got 3 Yakkas in 5 Mins! like you said sabiki rig right next to the wharf!!

I will def try the rig you mentioned! I will like to chase some tailor if that's the case as l got a salmon the other night, want to expand my list haha

    Thanks a lot mate!

Yep, numbray. You're lucky you didn't touch him as you certainly know when they zap you. Surprisingly given their appearance but they will happily hit soft plastics worked across the bottom so likely he hit your lure on purpose.

Yeah if l don't know what fish it is l will NOT touch it! Yeah I dragged the Jig across the bottom and felt the hit, but thought it was just me hitting it.

    Cheers mate

Are you wanting to fish in the harbour or are you comfortable fishing the ocean rocks? Personaly ive caught bugger all kings landbased at this time of the year, would get most of mine between Dec and May- rats early , bigger ones towards the end- anyway will await your answer

    Hey Mate,

After speaking to a few people they have told me the same thing, I'm looking for fish that's a rather good battle and loves a live bait (Yakka) - recommended any ?

  7. Hey Guys,

I'm based out of neutral bay and have been really wanting to chase some Kings. (LANDBASED)
I have tried Pillies and a few other bait but realised where l have been going there is a fair few Yakkas.

I wanted to know if anyone had ANY great advice on what is the best Rigs / Bait setup to chase them. eg - how to hook a Yakka correctly and what method to use to maximise the length of there life in the water swimming around :P

I really want to land a few good ones before l move on to targeting my next fish.

Any advice is greatly appreciated - If you would like to get together and chase a few Kings with me please do so l would love the company!

  8. Hey Guys!!!

Last night l went out for a fish around the Neutral Bay Area, I grabbed a bunch of frozen Pillies & Prawns from the servo and made my way down.
l was lucky enough to have @DerekD come down and show me a few good tricks, from squidling basics to just casting techniques... WOW he knows a lot!!!

On arriving we setup and got into a bit of squidling after no success for the first 15-20mins we put that aside to get the other rods setup and put some bait out there, I simply cut the tails off the pillies put a decent hook through and loop it so it doesn't come off with only a little nibble!!

After 1 hour Derek noticed my large rod had some movement, I grabbed it and got anot even five seconds later BOOM WE WERE ON!!!

The fish gave the line a great little screaming noise but after 15 mins we bought it in and @DerekD got the salmon in the net for me! YES FIRST EVER SALMON!!
    "Swallowed the how rig"

After measuring it for a second time at home by laying it flat over the tape it broke the 60cm mark!!!!! Yes I couldn't wipe the smile of my face as you can see below.

On the way out I noticed some bream and quickly dropped a line it and they had a look but just simply weren't taking the bait, the Mrs started to call the phone and yes that meant TIME TO GET MYSELF HOME :(
All in all was a fantastic achievement and defiantly a PB for my land base fishing ***Big Thankyou to @DerekD For coming down and helping me through he evening***

G'day Michael. Welcome to the forum. Always great to see new faces joining.

I usually fish the Northern Beaches off the rocks or the Harbour early am. Im going for luderick this Saturday crack of dawn around Lane Cove if you wanna join.

Most of the time if theres a good swell I'll fish the rocks around northern beaches so if you want to learn some rock hopping one day im happy to show you the ropes next time I'm out that way.

Feel free to ask for advice in the chat. Plenty of good hearted raiders with a wealth of knowledge they're happy to share and teach us young blokes.

Keep us posted how your trips go.

    Tight lines.

    Hey Kracka,

I have taken on some extra work this Saturday for some extra cash but after that I'm free most weekend, l really apricate the offer tho and will definitely Hit you up soon to learn some methods you mentioned, l will PM you my number now and let me know next time you head out!

Im going tonight to Kurraba Point just trying to figure out the place around there! Any tips ?

    Regards,
    Micheal

Hello Raiders, here's a post from the frozen South. I've been quietly reading other anglers reports and it appears that they are struggling with the Wintery conditions too. It WILL GET BETTER, eventually! My usual boat ramps have been unusable for months now so the boat hasn't had a run for ages. I did go out one afternoon to do a spot of Carp fishing, from the bank, lit a bonfire and managed to hook a monster of a Carp which took about an hour to take the bait, in the crystal clear, shallow water. Didn't land it as it spat the hook after several strong runs. I tried my favourite spinnerbait along some logs and ended up losing it. Had it been Summer I would have gone in to retrieve it but with the water at about 8c...bye bye lure.

So yesterday I ventured to the 5 mile (aptly named because it's 8 kms from Narrandera) and spent a lovely few hours battling the icy cold wind, whilst chucking lures and spinnerbaits around. On the way back to the ramp I took note of a deep hole in the old creek bed where there appeared to be some fish showing on the sounder. I set the lure well back from the boat and did a few laps over the 8 mtr deep hole. I kept running line out so that I knew I was fishing the bottom and got snagged. I couldn't reach the lure with my "pole retriever" so had to deploy the one which I use in the dams. After about 20 mins I felt a bit of movement and thought maybe it was a fish. I hauled it up from the depths to find my lure well tangled in an illegal lobster pot. I was happy to get my $35 lure back and get rid of the lobster pot.

Called it quits and returned home, still fishless, but much happier for being able to get out on the water again. As usual here are a few photos. Roll on Summer, bn IMG_0918rs.thumb.jpg.80dcd6327de74d8a17c4b3aa666cfd6e.jpgIMG_0914rs.thumb.jpg.709b40c1c4a72eb63d4f6f735a5b23cd.jpgIMG_0916rs.thumb.jpg.923a5f1dbbe3c9d0d0250247925d2bad.jpg

    Hi Neil,

Shame to come up fishless for the evening but like you said would have been great to get back out there!
I cant wait till its warmer also as when l have been going out I cant feel my hands!!
Thanks for sharing, hope maybe one day we can get together and go for a fish mate and you can teach me a few things buddy!

    Regards,

Hey my name is Jords. Been fishing since I was a young lad back in the 90’s but only just started getting a bit more serious and well, addicted. Love being in the outdoors and nature and the idea of being able to catch a fish for dinner, but also keen to throw back anything that is better off in the water for the populations. Usually fish around the Hawkesbury and sometimes up the coast of NSW (smiths lakes/forster/ port Stephens) and some beach fishing around the northern beaches. Still learning about soft plastics and have had some luck but nothing substantial. Get a lot out of reading people’s amazing knowledge and experience and already had more luck and fish after joining.

Only picture I could find was a bream off the beach at last light (and my last cast with last bit of pilchard.

    Hey Michael,

Welcome to Fishraider.  Yeah it's a long drive from Penrith. Have you fished much in the Nepean? Maybe put Nepean in the search box above and see what's around.

I'd also suggest putting a post below. Let people know where you're located, ask for advice on how and what to fish for, you might even find a fishing buddy (if you want one) who could show you the ropes.

You'll find Fishraiders are a damn friendly lot!!

    cheers

    Richard

I've known the signs were there for years and now I have to look for them as one or two have disappeared. The last time I was there the only one I could easily see was near the Balmoral boatshed.

I have also been there when people are fishing right next to the sign. I'm usually unobservant but that is taking it to the next level. :)

Couldn’t agree more however when your new to fishing and trying new spots must say my excitement after driving 1.5 hours to get there from Penrith I just wanted to fish!

Didnt see any signs at the front of the wharf so I guess you just learn for the next time, thanks for your advice I will be sure no to fish from there In future!

    Thanks.

Fight as well as any fish that swims on light gear. We get a few of them fishing really shallow water for snapper

It was extremely heavy when l tried to lift it! As mentioned in the last comment had no hook marks or markings of being caught which was odd

What Nuts said about the no fishing.

The circular area you were fishing off is part of the swimming area and as a result has a lot of foot traffic in bare feet so that is probably the reason that council does not want people fishing.

Over the years I have had to point out to a number of fishing people the no fishing signs around that section and that they can get fined for fishing there. Most take the advice nicely in the spirit it was meant and shift around to the section where they are allowed to fish. For some reason some of the no fishing signs in that section has disappeared.

Nice report and thank you for sharing.

As I mentioned to "Nuts" there was no visible sign, but thank you so much for the advice and information on the fishing policy there!!!

    Much appreciated, thank you

  19. 2 hours ago, nutsaboutfishing said:

Just be careful you're not actually allowed to fishing from the circular structure at all, but only from the wharf area on the left handside where boats can dock. That area is usually chockas.

Thank you so much for telling me !!!!!! I feel so embarrassed but when l went there l did not see any signs. Defiantly know for future - Thanks again mate
