@RedSeaFisho, checkout this article, still relevant:http://www.fishingmonthly.com.au/Articles/Display/5371-Location-Guide-Lake-Macquarie-Part-1

A good place to get bait and have a chat about current local conditions is: https://www.tackleworld.com.au/store/fishermans-warehouse-tackle-world-marks-point/

My general advice is to try for arrow squid at drop over, green eyes at moon island, black fish in channel near breakwalls, flatties/bream/trevally are all around the channel at the moment. If you find a guaranteed snapper or jew fish spot let me know!

I came across that article and was not sure if still relevant, so thank you for the confirmation. Pretty helpful article!

Will definitely give the channel a go!

Don't know the area, but your target list is pretty ambitious, only advice I can offer is gather your own bait, like Nippers, or the best fresh stuff you can buy. Be pretty rare to catch John Dory and Blackfish with the same bait, location and rig.

Thank you for your reply. Actually I'm happy to be out even without catching anything, but its always a welcomed bonus. So I'm not exclusively chasing the mentioned species and yes I'm aware of the different bait & rig requirements and probably I'll end up with 20 different rods in the boat to be able to try for all of them LOL.

    any bait grounds around Swansea?

  3. Hey Raiders,

I’m thinking of taking the boat out tomorrow and fish the lake for the first time. My quick research resulted in few spots, like the drop over, but i’m Not sure how recent the information was. If you have any pointers would be much appreciated.

My target list includes squid, jewfish, snapper, John Dory, & blackfish.

NB i’ll Probably be by myself so will have a spare seat in the boat. If anyone is keen on spending the day exploring you are welcome to join.

    Cheers,

    Ahmed

Nice report, not a bad day out, salmon are a bit of fun and I enjoy them especially bled and cooked same day.

This is what we did, bled straight away and cooked same day. Was my first time to try them baked though, turned out very good.

I also can't see any information about Jacksons being protected. Maybe they used to be, but aren't now. Great report Ahmed, I'll look out for you if I get out there again. Tied up with work and football ATM

Whats the boat called? Looks like a Blue FG boat

    cheers

Yes please do, it would be awesome.

That boat in the photo with the PJ is my mate’s, mine doesn’t have a name yet but it’s a yellow hull/white top Haines hunter 146.

Tied up with work as well, but I try to go out most weekends.

Nice report Ahmed. Sounds like you had a great day out. Hopefully next time you will find your target species.

It’s always a bless to spend some time out there and enjoy the wonderful nature, especially in a good day with low traffic. A good catch is a welcomed bonus.

I hope you didnt eat the shark in your foto  its a port jackson and protected species

No I don’t eat them, the port Jacksons went back safe and sound.

On a side note, I believe Port Jackson is not on the protected species list. It’s more of an informal protection thing so nothing is legally wrong with taking them home & I know that some people do eat them. However, I love to see them swimming back.

  8. Planned with a mate to go for an early morning snapper session. So after work, I packed my gear, and had a couple of hours of sleep before he picked my up at 4am. We launched from Parsley bay ramp at Brooklyn and we were ready to go by 5.30.

Anchored at west reef with the first light after a 30 minutes bumpy ride. Started our burley trail and had some snapper snatchers sitting at the bottom as well as some floating bait and were ready for the bites. All what we managed to get was some wrasse and reef fish off the bottom and some livies on the sabiki, so we moved to try a different spot however it wasn’t any better. After an hour or so, we decided to move closer to the headland in a try to find a calmer spot as our first 2 stops were uncomfortable in the small boat due to the 2m swell and the chop.

We moved to another spot and anchored for 30 minutes with no signs for the reds. However, the bait rig was being smashed by big slimies and yellow tail so we stocked some livies enough for the morning and moved to our next spot.

Losing hope on catching reds and having some live bait, we decided to troll for some time before anchoring at our last stop for the morning. Anchored again around Berrenjoey, in calmer water, and we had our bait in the water. Slow start with no bites until one of the floating pilchard rigs went off. A nice size salmon was our first keeper with more followers.

We managed to net 5 more salmon before the school disappeared from the sounder. Landed and released a couple of undersize snapper and a couple of port Jackson sharks. Lost a couple salmon and a monster lizard at the side of the boat while grabbing the net. Then we called it a day and we were back to the ramp by 12.30pm.

Although we had no luck with our target species and the weather was not ideal offshore, it was a good session overall that we enjoyed. At dinner time, I enjoyed a tasty fresh salmon along with some fresh shark steak that was caught on Friday’s night.

Apologies for not including a lot of photos in my post and for my limited story telling skills.

    Tight lines all,

    Ahmed

  9. Hi fellow raiders,

So I decided to hit Sydney wharfs last Friday to stock some bait, I ended up with 15 squid, 11 went to the freezer for bait and I enjoyed the below 4 with salt & pepper. The biggest measured about 42cm mantle+head and weighted around 850g. Just thought to let you know guys that big Cali are out!

Also managed to get a couple nice fat yakkas, ideal for butterflying, but looks like big schools of undersize trailer were taking my bait faster than the yellow tail!

    tights lines,

    Ahmed
