  1. Sarca's are over-priced and can be lost/snagged up. I pulled one up that was caught on our anchor. Weighed a ton as I wasnt just pulling our anchor, but someone else's anchor who had to cut there's loose.

If anchoring on reefy ground/bottom, run minimal chain as the more chain you run, the bigger chances are your chain gets wrapped up/snagged on the bottom meaning you not only lose a reef anchor but everything.

    2X Sand Anchors.

    1X Reef Anchor.

    2X Extra spools of rope

    1X Extra Chain.

Just extra we carry on the boat.

  2. Fresh is best as the golden rule.

Have caught jew on "bought" squid, however most of both mine and my brother Greg's jew's come on live yakka's or slimies.

If the squid is pink, dont touch it. Otherwise look at the eyes, thats a tell tale sign of how fresh the squid is.

  3. Very very common. Especially after that Navy Diver got attached several years ago in Rose Bay. I have a mate that told me some interesting stories after this attacked and the DPI started tagging them. On their first few tagging outings, they were severly undergunned with hooks being bend, reels breaking under pressure, and line breakages.

I was a North Head years ago when a member of this forum had a big Bull shark grab his kingy boat side, it was a big bull as it dragged his boat off anchor for a couple hundred metres before he was bitten off.

  4. Great report, and very informative on how you get squid in deeper water 20metres+

I have noticed the squid are much more sparse in Sydney Harbour than they were 20yrs. Probably cuase of how many people going for them now than back then. It was easy to get a dozen in 1-1.5hrs, now I am lucky to get 2-4 squid even if I put in massive 4-8hr sessions, its very hit and miss.

  5. Great Report as usual Pickles.

Interesting colours on the Amberjack, have never seen any like that before. Have caught several in the harbour over the past 20yrs, but none like that, could be that they lose their colours as they grow.

Kind of looks like a surgeon fish, but these typically tend to be darker and the distinctive sharp spikes along each side of the fish make it easy to identify.

  6. Great Report Yowie. Whiting have to be one of my favourite eating fish.

It was interesting after the tsunami, as I live close to Parramatta River at Meadowbank and the BOM issued warnings of pending rising tides and water levels. Luckly tho that didnt happen and I didnt see any mahor change in tidal levels.

Hey all, headed out for a session on the boat today with a plan to find bustups and hopefully snag a few fish, after roughly 2 hours of looking we finally found one, however the awkward positioning of it and the fact that there were dozens of boats cramped around it on moorings made for a difficult time.

Eventually my mate brought a 40cm tailor up and it was followed by the tiniest king I have ever seen would’ve been 25-30cm and a larger model probably low 60s, however they were extremely reluctant and they soon left.

After one more tailor and a lost frigate mackerel at the boat we decided to try a different spot in hopes of finding some more action. We decided to cast a few small metals down in a place I have seen bustups before and instead my mate brought up a squid in a spot I never knew squids were.

Soon we had boated 7 squids, 5 I caught on a paternoster squid rig and my mate got 2 on a metal, all in the middle of the day. We were ready to livebait for kings.

We took the squid back to the spot where we first saw bustups and 5mins in my mate hooked up to a small but worthwhile king in the 50s and landed it. About 10 or so minutes later I hooked up to an absolute monster and it smoked me in tight structure immediately, I then preceded to get absolutely smashed by another large king and my mates both got smoked by 2 other big kings each.

The insanely tight structural area made it almost impossible to land any decent fish, after about an hour or so of getting smashed the action died down and we decided to head back.

A good day overall and a new squid and king spot was achieved, hopefully can land some larger models later in the week.

    Thanks, Max

    Great Rport Max_fish.

Always difficult to find squid in summer with so many fish about, but find the bait and you will find the fish.

@Hads and I headed out early today (3/1/22) to chase kings and Dollie’s at the Fad / Wave rider and then kings in the harbour. At 5am, the Roseville ramp already had about 30 trailers and 5 boats lined up to launch, so decided to not stay in the harbour. Following advice from Raider Emil, I tried some bait jigs (usually find I can catch as many with my trusty 6lb handline and no 10 circle hooks) and filled the live bait tank in 15 minutes.

We set out for the FAD but noticed a school of gulls and terns diving on a bait school just off Middle Head, so flicked out some plastics, metals and strip baits and hooked into some super-sized Pacific Mackerel (slimies), after boating about 20 we decided to ring a few of my charter operator buddies to see what was happening with the kings yesterday, but even with Intel’, decided to stick with game plan and met up with @The Rev, who was also heading outside.

It was very sloppy close to North Head, so headed to Mugs, Iggies and Manly reef, to see if any Samson or Amberjack were around as water temp was 24 degrees, but only bagged one snapper (42cm), so not unhappy. We changed the game plan and decided to drift for Flatties and glad we did as we bagged out on blue spots, with 2 over 50cm. As always, there were plenty of little ones, but also plenty around 40cm. Rang @The Rev and invited him to share the action.

Heading back in around 11.30, there were 70boats anchored in the bay opposite Chinamans beach so not looking forward to the mayhem at Roseville, but surprisingly at mid day, it was quick and easy retrieve.

We came back with a good feed of fish- but no kings.

    Hey Pickles.

Gotta love the ever reliable fall back options of flathead. We were in the tinnie beside you at Nelson Park Marker, it was completely dead with no kings,, downrigged heaps of markers in the main harbour, and several wrecks without a single strike.

The ramp was great when we came back in at 10am, as the rangers were their turning cars, and boaties both away since the carpark was full, which made retreiving a dream with no one on the ramps since nobody could find parking spots. Great the see the rangers out in force and booking those who were parked illegally.
