  1. hi, everyone

just wondering whether there is any restrictions placed on recreationally collecting cockles from beaches in sydney area? for example, taren point area or water near captain cook bridge?

if there is any, what exactly is the restriction?

if there is no specific prohibition, does that mean anyone with a fishing license is allowed to take home up to 50 cockles?

    ps.

apart from cooking in salted water and using seafood sauce, any other ways to eat cockles?

and any pollution issues with cockles in sydney area?

    thanks in advance

  2. nice lyrics u came up with there.

we went to botany bay tongiht for a quick session, about an hour or so, got absolutely nothing either.

managed to get a bucket full of red rock crabs tho.

may spare out some time this week to fight with the big blue groper aye?

anyways, take care and good luck with the exams

  3. mate going by what you just said it seems you're doing everything right. Red rock crabs are definitely the #1 bait and you're getting them so no problems there. Urchins are the #1 burley and u got that covered too. Maybe the area ur fishing is overfished??

Id ditch the snapper lead and go with a light running sinker - depending on swell. We generally only fish calm flat seas for groper which makes this style of fishing easier - the fish are usually right at ur feet. Again, Id go 24kg tortue...80lb is crazy IMO...still thats just personal preference but i cant see how u can cast 80lb very far if thats what ur trying to do? Another thing, fireline aint the best in the heavier line classes so ill ditch that in favour of tortue.

As for the bait, i thread it through the 2nd leg from the back and push it towards the claws. hook point is supposed to come out through the gut section and be a little exposed (3 ormm or so) and I use a 4/0 big gun rather than a 5/0.

If ur getting the smaller browns then the bigger blue will be there too...if not, keep moving around..if there are any big blues around they will take your bait first...no doubt about that! Look for ledges covered in barnacles, etc that drop straight into deepish looking water....its only a matter of time mate.

    Cheers

    :fishing1:

    thanks Rockhoppin,

although the weather is not perfect this weekend, but me and my mates have decided to give groper fishing another try.

i will take ur advice and hopefully we will get a blue one?! :mad3:

ps. if u r interested, maybe we can go fishing together after my exams, i will supply the red rock crabs and u teach me some serious techniques.. :1prop:

  4. i personally prefer medium sized ones.

some of them grow up to size of my fist but i find them very hard to use. it will be pretty difficult to fit them decently on my hooks.

however, my mate tried once using a huge crab and guess what happened. it got a sudden strong bite and he lost his 3.6m shimano rod and reel. the rod sank down to the bottom of the sea like there is no tomorrow.

yes, they r those red brownish colour suckers running around the rocks near low tide, u can easily capture them if u go at the right time.

    cheers.

  5. mate, i am very interested in groper fishing.

do you have any secrets to share with us?

i have been using 80lb fireline, snapper sinker and mustad 5/0 (double) hooks to target gropers, my main bait is red rock crab, cunjovi and king prawns, sometimes i berley with sea-urchins. however, the gropers I caught were all 5kg under, same goes for my mates.

Other groper fishermen often pull 10 kg+ gropers but we have never had such success. Is there any way to target gropers in bigger size or is this just purely a matter of luck?

when u say we gotta make sure the bait is well presented, can u be more specific? do u run ur hook thru the legs or thru the case? thanks heaps.

  6. ya, its for the bloody migration law essay.

phew...at least its out of our way and now there is no excuses for not going fishing..

mate if u want squid, i will give u squid

as long as u dont mind doing a fair bit of driving.

i know a place in wollongong, it is like the venue for squids and cuttles to host their sexpos aye?!

lifting cuttles weighing up to 7 kgs is like lifting a bag of sunrise medium grain rice with ur fishing rod and it could be fun sometimes.

holla back if u have interest in getting some rice aye?

  7. alright harro evely oneeeeeeeeee

it would seem that quite a few squidding threads have popped up and i have also received a few pms about them, so last night thought stuff the uni assignments due in like 2 days I MUST SQUID... ya thats right due to my lack of mahi mahi success i thought i would give the blood cholestoral level a boost... nothing like one of them heart attack brain hemmorage strokes to get some extensions for uni assignment

anyway, got there at 2am, which is 2 hours before the high tide.... was completely windless which was great because squiddies hate that damn wind messing up their hairstyles.... started by trying my pink super prawn pro zuri (thats a name i made up for my fake yo zuri immitations)... to no avail!!!!!!!!!!!!! angryness........ anyway, i decided to investigate what was going on and watched the way the jig sank and realised it bloody nose dives... i was like whoever made this ate too many prawns but never seen them in the water eh... its not a pro zuri, more like a poo zuri...

anyway, remembered that guru MONDO told me that cheapos tend to do that so its best to cut away some of the weight... tried it, and realised my teeth werent strong enough... i then started feeling a bit dizzy and i realised the weight is lead and i probably should have had it in my mouth for too long trying to bite bits of the weight off.... hmmmm....

anyway, put my trusty green prawn $1 pro zuri on and chucked it out... now, this is my all time favourite (its a 2.5btw) jig and its caught me my biggest squiddo despite being only a $1 and not so

good quality... anywya, chucked it out a few times and nothing i was thinking eh????? bloody impossible i have never left this place without higher cholestoral and tonight will be no exception!!!! after a few more casts i realised something must be wrong, because i know the squid are there.... anyway, so i moved to underneath the big light, next to the no entry sign, and cast out again... just as expected, when reeling back my super green prawno a big brown squiddo came in hot pursuit... i reckon mantle length 20cm it was a fairly good one... anyway, i jigged and jigged and EVERYTIME the little thing would just touch the jig with 1 tentacle and then run away... then i would reel back and cast right in front of it's face and it would follow it into the light again and the same one tentacle touch thing would happen... this went on for about 15 minutes before i decided bloody give up....

so yeah, i reckon some egimax or whatever that squid spray thing is called would have helped... also, the water was a bit murkey yesterday so i reckon some brighter glow or ones that make them rattling sounds would have been goood....

there seems to be quite a divergence of results - some fishos are getting like 36 squid in one night and others have been frustrated the hell out of... i think thats because only some of the squid are coming on the chew atm.... others will be shy and do nothing but frustrate you till your veins pop... the water wasnt particularly warm last night either... so perhaps just a couple of weeks from now they will well and truly be on the chew...

    last but not least

im sorry to all the people i have told to try watsons bay i didnt mean to waste your time!!! i apologise... please feel free to feed me to the squiddies

anyway, assignmenting time now... and to all the other uni students on this website i reckon you have 2 options - 1) study hard for the finals, drink v, and dont sleep 2) RIOT AGAINST EXAMS WITH ME

mate...be4 i fninshed reading the first paragraph i realised it was u danilo....then i checked out who posted this thread, proved me right....haahhaha

ya man, i hv just managed some extension ey?! but unfortunately havent got any chance to get out for some fishing, its been bloody more than 10 days since i last touched my fishing rods...driving me insane.

i personally reckon, the best time to squid is around sunset and sunrise, something like 2am wouldnt give any decent results aye? if 2am is a must then ya glow-in-the-dark squid-jig is essential or if u r using bait put a glow-in-the-dark tube somewhere close to ur bait.

try using whittings. i have managed a few cuttles and squids using that as bait.

    cheers bro.

  8. awsome fish mate, must of went like the clappers. havent seen one like that landed in a while as a bust off is the most common end.

groper fishermen use 80lb+ lines often.

my friends and I are all using 80lb fireline, and we know ppl using 150lb lines too with double hooks to hold the red crabs as bait.

true that if u get snagged, it may be quite a frustrating and tiring experience.

    awesome fish indeed.

we have been targeting gropers for a few months, none of us has caught a blue one yet.

    well done.

  9. hi everyone,

we went down to the Ovens today, went down the track and got to the cliff.. the beatiful fishing spot was right in front of us, water was deep, open sea, flat safe platform. However, we could not gain access. The cliff was about 3 stories high, we did not find anywhere to tie the rope to and we couldnt find a safe path down. Maybe you are right, the locals have been grinding the anchorage point off to stop ppl from fishing there.. argh. :05:

there was another way to get to that gold rock platform, which is to walk from the beach along the rock beds (about 1.5 km walk?) but we gave up on that and just fished somewhere close to the beach. did not get any decent fish today. Saw others pulling huge drummers out but there was no more action after 9am.

    anyways.

just thought this info might help if anyone else interested in giving that spot a try.

    Cheers.

  10. many thanks for the advice, folks.

we are all new to that place, but one of us has been rock fishing for a few years, guess he can guide us to a safe spot. but ya, climbing isnt really my specialty, getting down there could be a problem.

we will see when we get there. if it is too dangerous, guess i should not risk my life somefish...haha

i was told that ppl used to take out marlins land based from that place. we are not exactly aiming for marlins since we dont have heavy duty gear for that, but would love to see it happening, hope there is pro fishos over there on thursday.

    thanks again.

  11. Hi all

Caught up with an old mate today and recounted old yarns

and stories of our rock and beach fishing day's in particular......... Garie

Am interested to know do any of you fish this area.......... of interest the northern

rock ledge of the beach and the one up further that we used to refer to as the .......deck...

it used to fish extremely well for salmon, tailor, bream.kingfish etc

and we also obtained our fair share of good snapper................

back in those days there was no boom gate so we could come and go 24/7

and also stay late at night in summer etc.................

Not with standing the safety aspect for care had to be shown with this area........but it was as good as it got

and was wondering if that is still so....... or as it suffered to the ravages of time.........

    Wondering......Warnie

been there a few times in the last couple of weeks, still plenty of salmons, the left hand side of the rocky platform you can catch decent sized black fish. somehow, I have not seen anyone pulling out bonito or tailor these days, instead, there were groups and groups of ppl catching leather jackets over there on weekends. last time I went, there were at least 10 ppl there fishing for leather jackets and at least 100 leather jackets were caught.

    good luck.

    Vin

  12. Good day, fellow fishradiers.

A few mates of mine are planning a trip to the Ovens on Thursday morning. we have never been to that place before but have heard about how it delivers any time during the year and no one comes back without a bag load of fish, so we guess it is about time to give it a try.

We did some research on the internet about that area and was informed that the place could be quite dangerous, and to get to the gold spot we will have to get down to the bottom of the cliff and a strong rope is of neccessity.

Was wondering any raiders have been to the Ovens and any information about that fishing spot would be appreciated. (we r newbies btw) We would like to know where the path leading to the bottom of the cliff is and where is the best location to park our car. (Street name, suburb name, etc).

Any extra tips on how to produce the best fishing outcome would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance. If our trip turns out successful, I will do my ever first fishing report asap. :1prop:

Thanks again. Take care everyone and keep fishing.
