If the bungs aren't in and you can get on the plane a lot of the water will come out (haven't done this myself though - but have heard this from a couple of people).

thanks for that guys I will have a look around

Hello all,
I am looking to buy a set of waders. I fish in Sydney, all year round, including winter (usually from my tinnie). I have found my myself doing a lot of land-based fishing lately and would like a set of waders to wade into weed beds etc at places like Narrabeen lake. I don't know anything about them other than what I have read on the net and I thought some other fishraiders honest advice would be better, thanks rod

Love using "cobwebs" - makes every fish a good fight.....

Hi blue bottle,
out of interest, where do you fish at Lanecove, I drive thru lanecove a bit and always look at the water and see small swirls, and I've always wondered what it holds and whether you can fish in there, I've never seen anyone fishing it?, thanks Rod

Just done my wheel bearings and the old dust covers have had it. The old ones were siliconed onto the wheel hub. I bought a set of bearing protectors with grease nipple. The diameter is way smaller than the old dust covers which I had siliconed to the hub. It appears as though you knock these protectors straight over the bearings. Is this right? It would mean there is an opening between the outside of the hub and the protectors

Unfornately I find this happens all the time.......... I sometimes used to float my nets with clear bottles but worried about someone running over them and getting the rope around the prop. I like to stay nearby now, can't tell you how many times lost nets and crabs

Does anyone know if there are any crabbing restrictions in middle harbour

The plan was to fish the evening high tide until the sun went down for flatties, kings, tailor, salmon, jews etc using fresh squid and livies.
First job was bait collecting so was out just after dawn to spit bridge for squid. Tide was pushing through too hard to get a squid jig down so gave up and sped over to balmoral. Arrived to find the place heaving but found a corner to flick from and managed a single arrow squid that i dropped just as I swung it in By this time the sun had got up so gave up on squid and had some breakfast LOL
Back to bait collecting I zoomed up to narrabeen lagoon to get some poddy's with my newly purchased bait trap (telescopic plastic one). Worked a treat but could only catch the tiny ones about 2" long. After an hour of emptying hundreds of them back into the drink I gave up with the trap and switched to a rod with a single #12 and bits of bread. Half an hour later and I'm back in the car with a bucket full of nice size poddy's.
Drove home and put the bucket in the kitchen with an aerator, fresh batteries, and instructions to the (very puzzled) to look after my new fish and went xmas shopping.
5pm and we head over to clontarf, find a nice spot among the kids and boats and out go two poddy's. Then nothing. Then more nothing. Then one of the rods starts flapping and gets my attention - im thinking that's a panicked poddy! Then it stops and there's weight on the line. The missus pulls in a big fat blue swimmer which falls off before I can get to it
Then a whole lot more nothing until the sun sets. I finally crack and put out another rod with some pillie cubes just so we can catch something and have half an hour of catching tiny pinkies until it gets too dark.
Did manage to run into a fellow raider - toikle (Nick) - who I think managed a few small whiting and pinkies on prawn and nothing on the live poddy's he had out. Lots of other people fishing there too and I think the only thing that wa caught was one small lizard.
So in conclusion, lots of effort for a big fat zero!
Mate the middle harbour has plenty of poddies, no need to go to narrabeen from there....shallow bays and boat ramps (hard on busy days) - got heaps of perfect poddies on saturday from a small bay - no flatties but got some squid.

Ah I saw you on the lake on the weekend. It looks even better on the water than it does in the photos. I was the silly woman on the green kayak trying to get some exercise. That's a whole story in itself but I wont hijack your post. And I almost paddled over to compliment you on your set up not realising I had already seen it on this very post.
Brilliant looking boat.
Thanks for that, yeah it is a big improvement, very easy to fish out of....come over and say hello next time

no worries, thanks for that

I need to replace my leaf springs before they break in half from corrosion. It is a small trailer for 3 - 4 metre tinnie, I haven't done it before, but had a look and it doesn't look that hard. Has anyone got any suggestions re where to get replacement springs from and whether it is straight forward. thanks spence
-
Can any body tell me where to get some new springs for my trailer in the Sydney (western suburbs or northern beaches area preferrably) area. It is for a 385 quintrex. I'll probably fit them myself - thanks rod

Very nice looking work. Well done.
Going back to your first post in this thread, do you mind telling me why you changed from a steering wheel to tiller steer? I am curious because I am looking to buy a bigger boat (current boat is a 10ft punt) and was leaning to a side/centre console or forward steer set-up rather than tiller but am finding it hard to find something suitable in my limited budget. Maybe a tiller steer set-up may be more affordable. What do think are the pros and cons of tiller steer?
Thanks,
Baz
Baz, the steering wheel and throttle took up too much room on a small tinnie. 3 cables running front to back as well and it was after market, which didn't help - Forever mucking around with it. The tiller is heaps better. rod

I like your live bait tank.
Do you just pump water into the tank and then let it flow over the side through the overflow pipe?
Do you still need aeration?
Cheers
Yes on both questions. There is a small battery operated aerator that goes all the time and depends on what bait I have as to how long bait pump runs

Massive improvement and sweet looking. Great stuff Spence.
Hey i like that particular carpet..any chance i can get the make, price per m and where i can get it ?
Boomer I've sent you a personal message

great job mate.....i basically did the same thing last season on mine and i love it. the underfloor storage is awesome seeing as storage in a tinny is non existent.
any chance of a photo of how u mounted the elec motor to the front grab rail? i plan on something similar in the following weeks.
Here's photo's of elec motor
front
rear
Hi Spence,
Boat looks fantastic.
I can see that you have written a few words about how the bait tank is attached to the boat - but Im a little hazy as to exactly how it attaches to the boat. I can see that there is a bracket that somehow attaches to the bait tank. How does this work? For the life of me I work out whats stopping it from falling over .
Would you mind taking a piccie or to of the actual bait tank install ? I need to do something similar but cant work out how it works.
Cheers

Long thread
countersunk to fit over first nut
then wingnuts for easy removal to empty and clean.
I have used this set up since last post and it works fine

It feels good to make a nice float yourself or just buy them if you have a spare $1.50.

ditto..I like the the look of mounting an electric motor directly off the bow rail, rather having to shorten the rail to make room for it....any more details regarding an adaptor, a bracket or a clamp? and how does it perform and what length shaft do you have?
Nice workmanship on the new fit out Spence69.... That type of bass bream boat hull is very sort after these days and your attention to detail has already added big dollars to the value of your boat as well.....
Cheers
jewgaffer
Jewgaffer; the electric motor is a cheap one $200. It is a stern mount, but I have turned the handle around. I will take a picture and put it on, but am going away tomorrow morning for 4 days. Basically fitted a piece of plastic to the bow and bolted the electric straight on. It doesn't move or anything because the clamps are wedged under the rail. You will see what I mean when I put pictures on. I have had it for a few seasons without a hitch. It is only 32lb or something like that and medium shaft. The tinnie is only a punt and the motor still gets in the water...just.

Evets, this was easy. The hatch is bolted to the aluminium angle. The lbt is screwed to a separate piece. The separate piece is bolted to the hatch - here I have used wingnuts for easy release. (It sits flat because I have countersunk underneath )

Looks like a really tidy job. Will no doubt make your fishing that much more pleasurable.
Well done.
One Question,,, is that just a small bilge pumping fresh water into the livie tank? and if so, what size ? I've been thinking of getting a decent one on my boat
Cheers, Dave.
Dave it is just a cheap water pump purchased locally - $50. Because it has such a short distance to pump it does it very easily, it comes out just like a hose and makes a good splash, circulating the water enough to keep poddies, yellow tail and squid alive

After recently having remote steering replaced with a tiller I started to remove the steering wheel and cables....just kept going and stripped boat clean. It was past time for a new fit out;
Wiring stripped out and new terminals/plugs for nav lights. Wiring for nav lights, sounder and electric motor run through conduit;
Cut some aluminium box tube and angle and had box tube welded in on ribs and I pop riveted angle over them. Angle welded at the stern and more pop riveted to back of rear seat;
flooring from 15mmm ply which was coated with waterproofing and carpeted;
Then I cut front casting platforms- they are split in two and I had to move the sounder up under bow with switch for nav lights; - the flappy carpet on seat has now been glued down now cabin light wired up so now looks better than photo
Then rear hatches cut and fitted (they house bucket, esky, battery and petrol tank);
It came up well and looks like this;
Then I re-fitted the old livie tank which works really well, but this time it is set well back in the boat. It doesn't hold too much water to affect boat. A switch is fitted (can't be seen in photo's) behind the tank. The hatch it sits on is bolted on and the livie tank is bolted to that hatch with wingnuts. It can easily be removed to empty/or clean; The band on the livie tank is just a headlite which I use as a stern light.
The boat is an older 385 quintrex with 30hp honda. The aluminium is light. The ply replaced some older ply that was just screwed straight to ribs so no more than 20 - 30kg added. The under floor storage will house a hose/attachments and ropes etc. The costs were $200 for the welding, $60 for metal, $80 for the ply and $150 for carpet and $50 for glue. Waterproofing membrane I got for free. Other bits and pieces meant total cost of $600.

I have a 10lb bomb and want to rig it up on my tinnie. I wouldn't use it often as I mainly fish for estaury fish but i do on occasion fish the harbour buoys and markers with livies. I was going to buy an Alvey reel but am wondering if it would be strong enough, I think it would have to be a large snapper Alvey which are expensive. AN alvey would be easy to attach to a rail on my boat. But I am now thinking of simply tying it off with some rope that I would mark every 5 metres. (I usually take a fishing partner in the harbour wo there a spare hands to pull it up). Any thoughts or anyone else who has done something like this would be helpful thanks rod.

Hi all
My family are looking at a caravan at Smiths Lake; it is at the eastern/northern side. I looked on sattelite view and the lake appears to be cut off from the sea. Is there any fishing (or crabbing) in that area? beach or lake? (we have a tinnie) I have fished and crabbed Wallis lake and it is one of my favorite spots but haven't heard of anyone fishing Smiths Lake.
any info heaps appreciated -

Don't think of squid as just bait either...keep some (green eyed squid) for the pan.....better than fish
