  1. At last count i had 5 split canes 2 graphite and lost count of the glass rods all of varying action my go to rod is a MkIV Avon from scottie rods its a split cane but has loads of power and leaves my graphite rods for dead as for actions its user dependent i prefer soft full action rods like the sportex 663 an dmore recently the kilwell 1365 i find graphite too stiff and theres no feel i like a bit weight to to the rod and again its what you are brought up on!

Royce is it you lost count of the glass rods or you cant count that high :1prop:

sure as hell no i cant and it would take a day to do so.

  2. Im heading to fiji next month and was hoping to flick a few lures around when i get a chance (landbased). I have a 5000 size reel with 20lb braid i will take 30-50lb fluro and a 7 foot ugly stick tiger rated up to 50lb.

It is not very reefy where i will be staying, was wondering what lures anyone can reccomend and colours i was going to take some spanyid raider and snipers for long casting but any other ideas would be much appreciated.

p.s Im not sure if this should be in takle or here so sorry if i was wrong

  3. oh yes the caravan park pelicans i had one take my luderick about 20 metres away from me after it scooped it up from the shallows i was letting it take the line thinking it would realise and drop it. it sat down and started to try and swallow it, i didnt know what to do so i struck. the fish came out and i ended up getting it in but they hung around the whole session. I dont fish there as much now cause its happend to me a few times now. I know what you mean pete. They look good but i dont like em anymore :1badmood:

Oh and there is nothing more anoying than releasing a fish to try and be nice and not to be greedy and then a f*?&n pelican comes on over and takes your groggy fish. but they do look nice.

  4. just got back from a short session at the spit heaps of people so i ventured round for about an hour :1badmood: not exactly what i had in mind. found a nice weedy outcrop threw out the float added burley and couldnt even role a smoke (probably not a bad thing) got half a dozen biggest 39cm which isnt bad smallest 29cm rest mid 30s wind picked up i was still getting heaps of downs but the belly in my line was outrageous so i packed it in after losing 2 fish from bad hook up due to wind.

  5. Hi Mark, Planer boards are commonly used in the States for trolling a number of lures at shallow to intermediate depths so that one rod has a chance of getting multi hook ups once a school of fish has been located.. I wouldnt think they would work well when using live baits other than slow trolling same just below the surface and that's the point when downriggers come into their own using a single bait.... You have to increase speed to get diving lures working at the depths they are designed for when using planer boards, which can be ran off one rod in each corner of the stern...... However trolling very slowly, letting line out and hitting reverse to pause an array of live baits could work well when slow trolling live baits on Planer boards......Once you drop a planer board into the water you can motor along slowly and let the Planer board out as far behind the boat as you like..... Planer boards act as an extension of the stern of a boat with a number of lures coming off a board which has a single connection for the line going back to your rod.... When you hook up on the troll or while drifting, the fish is/are also fighting the planer board....

Planer boards would be handy to have when you're drift fishing multi baits across shallows or trolling lures into intermediate depths in deeper water where it wouldnt be impossible to get tripple hook ups on kingfish and the kinfish would have a lot of fun trying to fight a planer board.

It would be worth watching a couple of kingfish trying to drag a heavy duty planer board that keeps bobbing back up all over the place down into structure :D

    Cheers

    jewgaffer :1fishing1:

haha yea maybe it would help my cause of not getting bricked 2 in 3 times.

thanks for the info jewgaffer i dont think the one i ordere is very heavy duty but il have to wait and see.

I didnt even think of using more than one leader coming off it that could be interesting especially if you had two rods with two leaders you could have a double double hook up...

  6. Hi Mark I have a contact in the States who uses a U.S. made planer board with long leaders on them and trolls a couple of medium diving lures and deep divers for some of the fish he fishes for over there... Is that what you are wanting to achieve ?

    Cheers

    jewgaffer :1fishing1:

jewgaffer to be honest i originally just got it out of curiosity but i was thinking of using it with small live yakas. but i also would like to give it a go with lures it would get the rapala cd lures down an extra metre or two which could be handy.

does your mate in the states rate them?

  7. ive used a fish seeker in the past but never had much luck

never seemed to work corretly using baits as it kept flipping the seeker over so it would surface with the bait

they work well trolling lures they seeem to keep them at depth

but i never had much luck but i really never gave them a good go

this is the one ive used $13 from whitwoths

I was actually thinking that when reading about it on the net it sounds like they are more suited to lures or small strip baits the one i have ordered is similar but isnt designed to turn and surface.

    post-5144-1239527594_thumb.jpg

I am also concerned about the maximum line rating used for them they reccomend something like 10lb-15lb i was thinking 50.

the swivel and clip look like they are reasonable though.

and if a decent fish gets on i dont wana fight the diver aswell.

  8. I was wondering if anyone has tried or heard about fish seekers or any other divers used instead of a downrigger.

I have a couple of things coming from the states and i got one its a luhr jensen jet diver.

there are others with release clips was wondering how to go about using them and if they work.

if they do work it is obviousley a great way to troll livies without a downrigger

  9. You haven't said what you mainline is - presumably it's less than 20 lb and that would be the main reason you are losing fish. I would try 30lb main line and 50 lb trace.

I am using 30lb braid and 20lb braid all of the fish i have lost have broken the trace and not near the knots.

I was just thinking if the action of the lure isnt dampened much by the heavier trace i would be better off using it but if im only going to get 50% of what i am hooking now i would rather lose a few lures as im not catching many anyway unfortunately.

just when i cant get enough livies. I will upgrade the trace next time i go out thanks for the advice

  10. I have been doing a bit of trolling around middle harbour for kings and have caught a couple but lost a fair few i have been using 20lb fluro trace i only use the cd 9s and lures of similar size. If i was to use 50lb trace does it effect the lures motion much as i am losing a lot of $$$ worth of lures.

  11. Hi MARK, sounds like you lost your self a decent fish there.

Mate im no expert when it comes to fishing as you can see by my reports.

With the mac, I would fillet it and salt the fillets whole in a snap lock freezer bag, try to get a big enough vaccumn bag so you dont have to fold the fillet.

Place one fillet per bag seal up and lay them flat in your freezer.

I would also keep the fish frame and guts and use this as burley on your next trip.

The head can also be spilt down the middle giving two pieces ( an eye on each), this can also be used a good size bait.

    Good luck mate,

were you fishing off a boat and what day and time did you get smoked.

    Twin 1. :1yikes:

middle of the day and i was in my tinny cheers

  12. went to the spit and around seaforth bluff caught 1 just legal king got absolutely smoked by another using 30lb fireline 50lb fluro trace just about spooled till i used my hand to palm it like an alvey i reckon it was a biig king also caught a frigate mack was wondering if anyone can tell me the best way to prep for bait i was gonna salt it any suggestions. All were caught trolling

  13. hi mark

next time your in a tackle shop grab 2 smiths jigs one white and one pink in the small size run them out 10 to 30mts each side of boat around 4 to 8 knots

    peter :1fishing1:

    gday pete

as you can tell i am new to this in fact ihave no idea but i thought it is time to target something other than blackfish (not that im getting bored with them) iwill let you know how I go with them.

  14. I was just wondering if anyone wanted to share some methods they may use when trolling diving lures such as rapala cd and xraps i was thinking of trying for a few kings i was told that you shouldnt have the lure more than 20 meters behind the boat and is fluro the best trace? I have tried a couple of times around middle harbour for zilch any help would be muchly appreciated.

    cheers
