  1. Hello all,

took a run out to the Cape Banks area this morning on the hunt for some kings

sniffing around the hordes of salmon in the bay. I've gotta say there is action

everywhere for the sportfisherman with a bit of patience for the schools to rise.

Failed miserably on the yakkas at some likely spots but managed a coupla squid

out on the sea side of Bare Island. All the while the schools of salmon would

periodically erupt and the boats would come a runnin'.

Decided to concentrate on the Cape as the tide had turned and maybe the kings

would be around some of the great structure out there.

Only had two squid and the first barely got down on the rigger before getting smashed.

After a good fight on my TN12 with 20lb a just shy of 70cm model was in the box

and the second went out. Another just under followed not long after and the baits were over.

Was slowly heading in to try for some more baits but with the umpteenth salmon blow up dead ahead....

First cast with a 10 gram raider and all the tactics came out of the bag over the next

twenty minutes as 4lb braid with an 8lb leader can only do so much on these engorged salmon.

As simple as this may sound, and as often as you have heard it -

SMALL LURES to match what they are feeding on are the go.

Throughout the morning there must have been a dozen boats flying up to the schools

and never once looking like hooking up with some of the lumps of things I saw flying out.

Seriously on more than one occasion the action would engulf boats all around and

the guys were hung out to dry.

If you wanna a go at some good fun sportfishing on the weekend, its on.

  2. Am shocked and saddened to hear of Neils' passing and

respectfully offer my condolences to his family and friends.

To his Adventure Bound mates - we all have respect for your

combined efforts along with Neil and would support any

decision you come to regarding the show.

  3. Thanks Jim and Mike,

this season has been notable for undersize kings and

a change for the better was welcome. This outing has

really put the wind up me as the rats bring about some

complacency when it comes to rigging.

You never know when a decent fish will come along,

so its a heads up for me.

  4. Thank you all for the encouraging remarks.

Yes CFD the Trinidad is on a PE2 to 4 Daiwa Monster Mesh

and it is a good combo. Feels about right for downrigging and

trolling and as a bonus - casts very well with upwards

    of an ounce.

As productive as the Bay has been of late Josh, I couldn't bear

to line up with the numerous others for a shot at all the likely

spots - this fish came from a little further north outside.

Framed - as far as table fare goes it seems the mid sized models

are favoured but metre plus versions taste pretty good too.

  5. Hello all,

haven't posted for a while due mostly to the limited fishing of late

and of course the hordes of sub-legal kings. Well it looked as though

today would be another fruitless outing right up to the last bait.

With four fresh squid and eight or so live yakkas from Molineux I headed

for Horners' Corner up around Malabar to see if the legal size drought

    could be broken.

After one pass and a hookup on squid for a 62cm model I figured the

summer '08-'09 script would be followed again. After mixing up rigs and

baits for a bunch more, it surely seemed like the ice slurry in my box

would be poured out clean once again.

Amongst all this it was great to see a couple of rock fisho's had ventured to

the ledge and were hooking up on lures and having a ball. I often wonder

why land based guys don't give this ledge a go more often. Good on you

guys if you are fishraiders. Thanks for the encouraging hoots on hookups.

Well you all know the feeling and as my last livie went below on the Trini 12

lighter outfit, it was now or never. I had saved the best looking yakka

for last and it wasn't long before he got hit. Finally a good take with some

solid runs and the need to manouver the boat to help land him.

Into the net and a healthy 78cm fish giving me a smile on the mug for the

    bumpy trip home.

It's about time, but thats fishing eh.

  6. Outside certainly was the way to go Thursday.

Yakkas were thick as thieves on the inshore reefs and

set as livies on the downrigger gave excellent results

south of the Hacking on the kings.

Mostly around the 60 to 70cm size which was interesting

as the smaller kings usually like the squid heads also

on offer but were smashing the smaller yakkas one after

    the other in preference.

Just as Byron mentioned - a good day to chase the

pelagics outside as the Hacking was still a bit dirty

    and slow for bait collection.

  7. netic,

thanks mate for the info on the drag. Sounds like twenty pound would

be a good compromise for castability and power.

I too wish this post was listed earlier, your reel would have been a

timely purchase for what I have in mind.

Could I trouble you to ask a few more questions via a PM if possible?

    Thanks for your reply.

  8. Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone out there may know of the differences

apart from line capacity with these two reels. (TN12 to TN14)

As with most specifications I would imagine the 14 to have a wider

spool hence the larger capacity and slightly heavier weight - is that

    the case?

Also what would the real world drag pressure be for these models?

I am looking to spool with 20lb braid and am wondering if ten pound

    of drag is a reality.

I know these models are no longer imported into Australia by

Shimano, but I am keen to hunt one or the other out. I would prefer

the TN12 as I suspect the spool to be narrower and lighter - thus

better cast capabilities for lighter lures.

If anyone knows of either the TN12 or 14 for sale (used) or in

stock at their local I would appreciate a heads up.

Thanks for any info anyone may be able to provide or some

well informed pros / cons would also be appreciated.

  9. franga,

nothin much to say about all that..... you filthy finks. good onya mate.

how good is catching anything on a home made let alone that beast.

good lookin boat, is it one of those legendmarine dory's with a console?

    well done mate.

  10. Chef,

great effort mate. We've had a couple mess up the deck over 30lb while jigging

and the hit and fight is unbelievable eh. Make sure you put that up for the lure

fishing records - it will be great to see the ante upped to something that special.

    Well done, barker.

  11. Well done Banana,

great report, great fish and again I wonder why we sponsor those $10 plus glossy

magazines when a normal bloke like all of us on fishraider posts a report like this.

That takes the cake for sport fishing, boat handling and some good management.

    Good onya mate.

  12. Good onya Byron, thanks for the kind words although the kings are not rocket science

compared to the jew. Hope you are doing well and getting amongst it yourself.

The Northern Finks - thought to be extinct but found to have just returned to a more

familiar climate. Good to talk to you Finks - the Sharks have done it again. Next year.

  13. Olitay,

thanks mate - on the day we pretty much just put down anything we had to see how they went.

Honestly I believe a length of shiny galvanised reo-rod with a hook would have done just as well.

With the frenzied school and four bait like jigs wizzing around their heads there were no stand

out colours, sizes or types. Every jig worked, even four different types on a couple of

    four way hookups.

    All up we dropped -

Williamson Benthos and Abyss in pink and blues of varying 200 to 300 gram weights.

Surecatch Sonics in pink colour at 200 grams.

The original River2Sea knifes in redhead/yellow colour in 200 and 250 grams.

Zest models in the long slender type in black backed silver and green at 200 and 300 gram,

and one of those River2Sea plastic squids with the double ended assist hooks.

As the current and wind/drift were both pretty lean the lighter weights were no problem

even in the 130 metre depth.

Retrieve styles varied and both flat out speed and jigging at the right depth worked well.

Hope that helps and I wish you all the best tomorrow, regards - Barker.

  14. Frank,

no worries mate, glad to hear you had a good day. You could see what I mean by the floats

being a helping hand I am sure.

For me this is what this site is all about, to pass on some current information so as

to help others get some fun out of what is going on out there.

    Regards, Barker.

  15. Erroll - cheers mate, shift work is unreal for midweek action. Still at the will of the weather but

I am in no way complaining.

Peter - thanks mate and here is some more pictures of the business.

    1. our real target, the bycatch was annoying.

    2. don't know if you can see the school down deep on the sounder?

    3. a few pointers....

    4. i'll keep an eye on the rods - bludger.

  16. Drummo,

thanks mate - the Jackets are not bad at all compared to some of the recent reports I have read.

With four blokes jigging for over an hour in only two locations and losing just three jigs and minimal

    line they were behaving themselves.

I reckon the 'couta may have been the culprits at the Peak.

If you can, get out the Twelve Mile tomorrow and sound out the schools hanging in middle water.

The trap floats are great indicators for drift and general positioning - use 'em to make it easy.

Hope you can get amongst it, Barker.

  17. Hello All,

we had a fun day with an early start out of Botany and the idea of a jig and troll out wide.

The water around the Peak was dirty and about seventeen degrees so it shouldn't have been

a suprise to jig up a bunch of Barracouta and a lone Kingy whilst losing a coupla jigs.

The decision was made to head to the Twelve Mile and gradually the water came clean and

hit eighteen degrees so things were looking up. To make matters easy the pro's had their

traps on the structures holding some good schools and the floats were like FADS.

The next hour or so saw thirteen kings between 67 and 80cm jigged up on various colours

and sizes with another jig and some line lost to the odd Jacket.

With a feed for our four families on board and the action coming to an end it was time to

drag a few lures to the shelf to see if the head of the warmer water had made its way down.

As we crossed the two hundred metre mark and around Browns a few Stripeys jumped on,

but no Yellowfin showed to lures or during a brief cube.

All up a good day with plenty of stupidity among a few mates to remind us that catching fish

really is a bonus to getting out there and having fun.

    Regards, Barker.
