  1. Thanks for the reply Huey.Would the Humminbird 596c be of similar price, the 640x640 pixels looks a lot better resolution, but different dual beam cone angles.Any advantage with 60/120 cone angles.

    Regards Evopete.

  2. Hi everyone, has anybody used the new Garmin 550c fishfinder as I am looking to upgrade. How does the dual beam 60/120 degree transducer compare with current Garmin 50/200hz transducer at 500watt output. Appreciate any replies,

    Regards Evopete.

  3. Hi Big Dog, the Hump seems to have a few different areas of reef and gravel, the first mark is about 40 fathoms and the second is about 30 fathoms. Its best to use a sounder to look for likely areas and bottom structure if new to the area.If you can identify gravel patches in about 28 fathoms you should'nt miss out.

Hope the seas are kind and you find some good spots that are productive.

    Regards evopete. :1fishing1:

  4. Hi Evopete...sounds like a great trip...my guess is you didnt get any fishing done??..anyway i was wondering if you could tell me if the place is child friendly??...my anniversary is coming up and thought norfolk might be a good idea....

    cheers

Hi thomo, sadly no fishing but had a great week on the Island. The Island is suited to all groups, family's and elderly alike.Emily Bay is a calm and safe swimming spot and has good reefs to snorkle and explore. There are plenty of tours to suit everybody, and interesting places to visit.Plenty to do.I would highly recommend Norfolk for your anniversary.

    Regards Evopete.

  5. post-5588-1242123632_thumb.jpg Hi fellow Raiders, thought i better report on our Easter trip to Norfolk Island. We had a great week of tours, sightseeing and relaxation.Unfortunatly the wind and swell were up all week so could not venture out on a planned charter.I've added a photo of one of the boat launching piers which shows the conditions.

A great bunch of locals which made our stay enjoyable.Highly recommended.

    Regards Evopete.

  6. You will absoulutely love Norfolk Island. I was married on the island a few years ago. I have been numerous times as it is my favourite place. At one stage, I almost moved to the island as I love it so much.It is such a different way of life. The wildlife like cows have right of way. If you hit one, it was a $200 fine from the police. You will see them roam all over the place. Everyone leave their cars and homes unlocked as it is virtually crime free. I would suggest if you haven't already organised, hire a car as their is no public transport. Car hire is almost included in most accomodation, but if you have to organise your own, it is around $25-30 per day.

In regards to fishing charters, I have sent you a PM with some info. With landbase, you are limited as the island is surrounded by high cliffs. You can fish off the beaches or the piers at Cascae or Kingston. When I was their last, you could buy a fishing guide for around $5 from the tourist information centre on the island in Burnt Pine, the main shopping area.

Enjoy your stay on the island. I am really jealous. Must be almost time for us to go back.

Now I am really excited about our trip. Thanks for the info and will report when we return.

  7. has anyone got a garmin 400c or a 300 sounder?

I have had my Garmin 400C now for over twelve months and found it a great tool to use.Easy to work through the screens, ample power output with dual frequency, easy viewing screen in sunlight with a small screen ,Good interpretation of bottom density and fish readings. I have used it to 50 M depths without any hassles. Recommended at the right price, Iwas lucky to pick mine up from US when the dollar was good.

    Regards Pete.

  8. Evopete,

The bar at sussex is notorious as previously mentioned.

I have spent a fair bit of time down there and have crossed the bar numerous times. However I havent been down there for 3 odd months now my parents went down over christmas and took my boat.

My father reported that the bar was ner impassable at mid water levels.

Over the years the entrance has been geting shollower and shallower as well as narrower.

It is a ever changing sand spit aswell as for years I always did a dog leg run out to the North. However last time down it had pretty much changed to a near straight run out.

Swell and sea wise you are fairly safe with the bar as it is verywell protected and I have never turned around due to swell on the crossing itself. OInly reason for not going through is because of water depth.

Last time I went down their I was comming back in late one afternoon and after following the breakers in I powered over the top of the (small) whitewater I was following to find onle 4inches of water beneth me!!

Came to a grinding halt but luckily after a couple of white wate came through it spun the boat around and I inched back out to sea to re align myself and come back. Own fault though as I knew it was bottom of tide and I had very bad sun glare.

Trick is to watch the coastal patrol guys go though or follw another boat out. And try no to come of the plane to much while going out.

I hope you are not to attached to the paint on your skeg! LOL

Anyway its a great part of the world and good luck

    Ben

Thanks for your input Ben,I shall keep a close watch on conditions before venturing out, Pete.

  9. The bar there has claimed several lives over the years. There is a sign post at the bar highlighting this fact.

I crossed it several times when last there some years ago without much problem. One crossing on return into the river system was a bit hairy and got the adrenalin going. So much so I forgot to drop my speed to the required limit and was pulled up by the coastguard some 50 metres inside. All was okay though as I had the required safety gear on board.

A couple of points to mention: the beach just inside the bar is very inviting and of course we had a swim there and took the opportunity to give the boat a wash in the crystal clear water. Beware, there are shitloads of stingrays laying on the sandy bottom there in very shallow water.

Around 1 Km off shore from the bar we had a ball getting stuck into some stomper lizards, and in the inlet itself the smaller legal size lizards were in abundance but could only be enticed with live poddy mullet. The mullet are easily caught just up from the caravan park. Make sure you take your mullet trap with you. Oh, and the prawns we caught around the front of the van park were delicious also. Don't forget your prawn net and a good strong torch.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

    Mariner

Thanks for the info Mariner.Shall check with locals and Coastguard for conditions.Any calm days will see us exploring outside if possible, cheers Pete.

  10. We will be down there next week as well (where are you staying?) but have only ever fished the basin. I will also be interested in any responses you get.

We are staying in a house on the canals or keys, and have a week to explore the area.Hoping to get a few days fishing the basin and outside if possible. May see you on the water Lasty.

  11. Hi fellow Raiders,my wife & I & some friends are heading to Sussex Inlet next week for holidays for the first time.Just wondering what the bar is like and any possible marks outside close by.We have been on the basin before, and are aiming to do some more exploring also . Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

I took Hueys advise a while ago but went the XD100 in our 90 yamaha 2stroke. about 10 hours on very happy, motor is cleaner running, and the oil trail in the water is nowhere near as obviuos. Still a bit smelly at idle and while backing up but that is always going to be with these motors. We dont use a lot so i decided the few extra dollars for the XD100 was worth it.

Hi 'achjimmy' ,Huey mentioned TCW-3 oil, does XD100 comply as a TCW-3 oil and does it also contain CARB-X additive.I dont do many hours as others and would like to use the best oil for the job. Have not changed over as yet. Regards Peter.

  13. I have a Yamaha 70HP 2ST and was wondering what oil to use, XD100 or XD50.Will I have to clean out the carby's and engine before I change oil.Any advice appreciated. Its oil injected 2004 model.
