  1. So me and mate wet a couple of lines for a few hours. Not much happening in the afternoon, couple of small tailor and snapper to keep us entertained. When a fellow raider rocked up and offered a live yellowtail I couldn't resist (couple of big kings in the area) It was getting dark and cold and we'd had enough for the day but when I try and bring the line in it doesn't budge an inch........ I'm obviously snagged............. aren't I? when the so called snag gives me a couple of big tugs I realise this could be an interesting end to the session. After about 5 mins of a careful fight on my light tackle we see this long slimey fella getting closer. I could think of a few species I would've preffered but hey I'll take that to see the session out. He went just under a metre.

Nipped out for a couple of hours this morning, didn't have any bait so grabbed whatever I could find in the fridge and I was off. This beauty actually pulled my rod in!! luckily I was quick enough to grab it before he took off. He went 30cm and took............ wait for it................. chilli salami.

  2.

Great flatty for your first one mate...

As for the squid, you can get them almost anywhere you can find kelp...

Best times are dawn and dusk but you can get them pretty much anywhere at anytime...

Try and concentrate your efforts a couple of hours either side of high tide if possible as this seems to be the most productive time...

There are some great threads on the forums about squidding so do a search and you'll come up with a heap of good info...

    Good luck!

    Cheers

    Tony

  4. A good first flatty, well done mate!Grab yourself a couple of small but good quality reels for your outfits

they dont have to cost you too much, you will enjoy catching fish alot more & most importantly they wont let you down when a serious fish comes along.

    cheers

    steve

sound advice Steve.... I'll put them on me Christmas list.

  5. What can I tell ya? less than a week after my story of frustration over at Rushcutters I've gone and landed me first Flathead :yahoo:

The mrs and I rocked up at about 5pm Saturday just for a couple of hours. We had a rod each to keep us entertained with the small stuff and we chucked out another 2 rods with bigger baits for anything juicy that might be swimming past. We were bringing in plenty of small snapper and Bream and I thought I would check the baits on the other rods.... As I slowly lifted the first rod to check the Bait (whole cooked/peeled prawn) BANG :1yikes: FISH ON..... and it is considerably bigger than the small Snapper that we've been messing about with.... could it be?.... it is..... FLATHEAD ON! (This might seem a little over the top but I have put in a lot of time and effort recently for poor results and the prospect of catching an average flatty was terribly exciting)

Half way in and the cheapo reel starts playing up :ranting2: after a short fight with fish...... and tackle.... he's in.... you beauty.. seconds after touching dry land the line snaps..close one!!

Took some cracking photo's and sent him back to put on some weight. In all the excitement I didn't measure him, I know it isn't a monster like some of the fish I've seen on here but I was overjoyed none the less.

  6. YUMMMMMY!!!!!!!!!!

    cheers!..stevo!..

I'm almost ashamed to say that he went back.. I am a catch and release fisherman. I love fish but the Mrs would be most unimpressed if I harmed one :wife: can't even live bait

    All good fun tho :1fishing1:

  7. Id get off the jetty and move all the way to the point, ive fished there using hand lines and caught good bream of an evening and trev's and lizards....prawns peeled and left to dry worked best for me.

    Hope this helps you out.

Nice one, thanks, I'll move up a bit and let you know how it goes.

  8. G'day fisho's,

So I've put a lot of time and effort over at rushcutters, normally off the small public jetty, for pretty poor results

I have heard good things about it and it looks like a great place to cast a couple of lines but it has been very unproductive.

I've tried most baits and all different lures at different times of the day. I'm after a bit of advice, has anyone had results there?, what are the best methods? do I move on?
