  1. G'day Hawkesbury Buoy,

I'm not sure what the long rod would be used for here... maybe it's an Ayu rod ??(Ayu are a tiny fish that the Japanese go nuts for, and fish for using a very particular technique involving live bait and very long rods).

If the reel is anything to go by, the rod is likely to be top quality. I wish someone would give me a Stella... top of the line Shimano gear and worth a packet.

    Cheers, Slinky

Thanks for the reply Slinky yeah wish the reel was a 6-8000 model :( rod has got me stuffed as the tip is so thin about the size of a needle, was wondering about using it in oyster leases and just drop the bait between the racks and just lift them out or maybe for fly fishing can just drop the fly on a fish without a cast or splash got me thinking now. You dont know what the floats or sinkers are ???

Also for the rod says expert in saltwater original design Full carbon rod with security holograms over it

so i recon be worth a quid

    cheers

  2. Was given a lot of fishing gear and a few large telescopic fishing rod 5.3 mtrs in length

made by gamakatsu?? or special most in japanese looked in google only can find

japanese spinning rod anyone know what it can be used for here or used them befor???

Picture of rod is similar off internet seat is off my rod

Also some type of floats that are weighted never seen before

  3. Hi Hawksbury Bouy,

My 2 cents worth is as follows, If you want a good small reel then look on xxxx for some second hand or cheap (but good) new reels (like stradic etc). My small reels are all excelent quality but have been purchased 2nd hand or chealpy on xxxx (Or Raider swap and sell now it is back up and running, Yay)

Rods however are a diffent prospect and should be matched to your style of fishing and as such tha price will vary.

I think all too often people ignore the most important part, which is the connection between the fish and the rod and reel. The line. I think I would rather have a cheap reel and rod and expensive line than expensive rod and reel and cheap line.

Anyway as everyone suggest it is a personal choice and as such if it feels like you are paying too much then you probably are....

    Cheers Sunnyboy1

    Hey sunnyboy1

No i dont need to get a good reel as mentioned i have a stella reel, : :yahoo: just trying to justify

if i should keep it or not as i have two other good reels Daiwa Freams, Biomaster 4000

and no decent rods except for my old trust ugly beach rod

  4. I know this topic has been talked about a few times

Interested in the Raiders knowledge in fishing with such gear

I can justify top price gear $2000 plus for the big fish tuna ,Kingies etc

Now what about the bread and butter fishing that most people do and enjoy

Can you still justify spending $1000 on a reel

Yes you get precision cut gears and more bearing are great and yes i have a Shimano Stella 2000 given to me by my uncle and agree they are better quality and feel nice but your unlikely to catch any more fish because of them, They may even last 10 years but its highly unlikely any one will still be using them in 10 years most people update there gear pretty regularly, I have had top notch diawa bait caster thats about 10years old and it feels very ordinary when compared to a cheap $100 reel these days. I find it hard to justify to myself at least, spending $600 to $1000 dollars on a reel that in the end wont really be out preformed by a $200 to $300 reel.

Rods i know nothing about only the action, fast or slow taper able to lift and wind without breaking it

and good guides, again does all this come into say bream fishing

These are questions a novice rod builder would look for and not just for looks

Is sensitivity the key factor? feeling for bites

What kind of blank do you look for?

    Why?

    Long or short?

    Do guides make a difference?

Is titanium any better than ceramic or stainless or plastic in guides?

    Does bindings make a difference

    Does a blank's taper make a difference?

Does a blanks spline mean anything to you?

How can you tell if a rod has power in it?

    Carbon fibre or fibreglass

So if you had to buy one or the other what would it be

    Rod or reel?

Many thanks looking forward to any comments

    john

  5. G'day all,

We've got a Lowrance HDS-5 unit fitted on our new boat, and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with the navionics "Platinum" series of maps for the Australian east coast?

Is it worth upgrading from the standard "gold" maps pack to these more expensive "platinum" range?

Any thoughts or input? I think the platinum maps run at a bit over the $650 mark, and I'm wondering if they are worthwhile?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi matey do you have a card already?? if so are you buying a code to unlock the maps

for the East coast or just going to purchase a full card with all maps unlocked?

Maybe able to help if you want to unlock a certain area on C-map type cards

  6. Sure you weren't getting "snipped" by leather jackets? They are a bloody pest and if it was happening a lot more than likely it was them as opposed to the bottom. Usually you know when you get the bottom... i.e. it pulls back!

Yeah i thought of that and mates also commented so could well be, their were three lines in the water and all were as they were snipped above the leader all at once no tug of being snagged at all just a nick and nothing just couldn't justify three lines being eatin by leatherjackets within seconds and re rigged four times

so they got 12 8oz of lead from us

  7. Hi guys,

I have a 6m Quinnie spirit and I was wondering if any of you could shed some light on a few decent fishing spots in the Sydney harbour area for this time of year. I dont want to go all the way out to the FAD but if anybody knows anywhere that's producing inside the harbour or just offshore towards long reef or down bondi way I'd love you to help me out. Im taking a friend out next week and neither of us have any idea where to go. Not sure what we'll target cos i dont know whats on at the moment somebody help me out pleassee ..

    thanks guys,

Nice spot strait out from the heads aprox 3 kls out in the 50-60 mtr range the other week in a 2 mtr swell but managed to catch 1 snapper aprox 1kg, nice sweetlip 2kg, flathead 2kg and a hell of a toad fish, first time out their bottom must be rocky as most of our gear got snipped on the rocks all at once many times so will lose a lot of gear but will get a feed
  8. Hi Raiders,

I'm heading to Elizabeth beach for the Queens birthday long weekend to do a bit of fishing and just plain relax.

I've never been there before so if anyone could let me know what sort of fish I can target there and where to target fish that would be great.

I know that there is whiting off the beach but will they be around early June?

There is a lake there also. Is this any good for fishing near elizabeth beach and Booti Booti.

Are there many crabs in the lake, I may just take a few traps, if they are allowed there. (not sure)

I have access to a little runabout boat for the lake, but it is only small so probbably won't be taking it into the ocean.

Maybe just do a little beach/rock fishing.

Any help or advice would be great.

Also taking my wife and baby son. Are there any interesting sights we should see whilst in the area.

Thanks in advance. Raiders helping raiders etc...

    Cheers

    Peter

  9. I haven't put my boat in at this ramp for many years. It used to have an old wharf and with a rocky shore either side of the ramp which was pretty crap at low tide and was really a 2 man operation putting the boat in and taking it out. I know quite a lot of work has been done so is it an easier ramp to use solo or will I have to find a helping hand, especially with a little wind to blow the boat around?

I am planing on fishing the road bridge early tomorrow morning and will be solo so say Hi if you see a 5m Quintrex cuddy cab.

Yeah is a good ramp now bit crowded on a good day

  10. Many thanks, very useful webpg and very enlightening. That also means a number of model not commonly seen are actually from Japan ONLY. So if we happened to go Japan...we will WoW on whats this and whats that then we buy and buy to boost their economic...hehehe...

  14. What a flathead mate . Vass (Bigfoot) was only saying tonight when we down at Maroubra that the big flathead on the Hawkesbury must be way up river. So it looks like way up river for the missing school jew maybe?

Hawkesbury Buoy that sure was a memorable catch mate and you can never rule out Bobbin Head when baitfish are abundant, that's for sure.

    Cheers

    jewgaffer :1fishing1:

Thanks for that jewgaffer and everyone else for the replys

Have seen them at foster near the lakes pool years ago gliding around the pylons and they were big

have caught blackfish and have seen flathead come up to the surface and bite them in half

Also i think the record for biggest flathead standing years ago was in the Foster pub 21 lbs

Also i still think my mates flatty was a lot heavier scale was a bit dodgy i think but happy in deed

    at that weight

All that and no more boat :( now have to be a desperate landbased again :wife:
