  1. Got to Thames Street Wharf at low tide around 6am this morning. My plan was to come away with a couple of fantail leatherjackets for a feed (and to get my own back after stealing all my bait while targeting other fish).

Used a long shank hook with a small piece of peeled prawn on a lightly weighted line and stuck it over the side and let it sink. Immediate hookup! One bream (undersize), then a tailor (undersize), then a whiting (undersize), then another bream (undersize)..... OK so the fish are firing but give me a decent one already! It was beginning to feel like I'd stumbled onto a Japanese Bonsai fishery....

Anyway the fish go off the bite for a while so I have a flick of the S.Ps for nothing, but by this time high tide was only an hour or two away.

    Then....

I decided to cast out a line with a pilchard tail on it , and I went back to trying for leatherjackets with prawn and longshank hook. Zzzzztttt!!! Something of decent size had taken the prawn, the rod U-bends, I adjust the drag and slowly manage to surface a beautiful 32cm bream! Before it goes in the bucket I hear a zzzzzzztttttt from the other line..... turns out to be a nice 55cm flathead. In the bucket it goes :)

    Score for the day:

    Bream 3 (2 undersize)

    Flathead 1

    Tailor 2 (undersize)

    Whiting 1 (undersize)

    Leatherjacket 2 (undersize)

A lot of undersize fish there, but my P.B. in terms of quantity caught in a single session.

Sorry, no photos - memory card is full and can't find the USB cable anywhere......

well done james a good catch any pb is a good one its a good idea to keep in mind when the fish come on the bite in your spot x as to how many hours before and after the tide and you'll have many more pb's

  2. Well headed wide today, not long out of Botany and the water was a beautiful blue but only around 18c. Wind a light ene, swell about 1mtre. Went to the first fad and had to laugh saw a couple of lures hanging of it. Absolutely NO action bird wise so decided to head ne. Saw two albies and some mutton birds doing laps so decided to investigate, Water went funny as some surface action was boiling raised something but only briefly, tried to find the bait ball but it went off. Looked down Sth to see an awesome front forming so we decided to run in quick, took some great photos of it moving up. Thats it nice day on the water!

    where's the pics

  3. we fished 5 nautical mile east of Browns in 21.5 degree water. No current and cubed with striped tuna and used striped tuna cubes as bait.. we caught a couple of fish that were better than the 12 kilo tiddlers of late.

Not a big day, but I do feel that if we had stayed later the fish would have come on.......maybe

Great bunch of blokes that appreciated the day.

Going by all the radio reports I think we were pretty lucky

Last week we raised two marlin together, hooked one and lost it after 20 minutes That would have been our second... bugger.. ..lures for stripes it's what you have to expect I reckon.

  4. Hi Raiders, Hope you can help me.

Looking for a good charter that can show us how to catch King fish and perhaps Snapper and also keep a few for dinner (celebrations).

price range $100~$150 per person would be good.

a boat that can accomodate 6~8 people? Maybe 10 even.

    cheers,

    Kez

hey kez if i were you i'd spend a little more than that if you spend $100 - $150 dollars what you are going to find is a charter that has over ten people and will only take you out and just drift around and basicly not target a specific fish all you catch is what you drift pass ross and glenn hunter from game fishing charters run two very good charters and are very experienced at targeting tuna snapper and kings and take a maximum of six alot more comfotable you'll find their number through this site or at their website game fishing charters.com

  5. hi fellow raiders i am just interested to hear whats ur most memorable catch to date, i will start this forum off and would say that i would consider catching a 229kg blue marlin in fiji, whilst on my honeymoon, was my highlight . cheers fellow raiders and tight lines............

catching three dolphin fish over 20kgs in one session in samoa and then the next day caught a 82 kg marlin was the best two day fishing i ever had going back for a three day live on and hopefully i can better that

    cheers warren

  6. I was just out walking my dog and he ended up two suburbs away so I'd guess that seabreeze was fairly accurate this time.

seebreeze is very accurate if you can hide out of the way the wind and swell is coming from than go but if your out in the open its not worth the risk

  7. THE GOSN GENERATION

The Gosn family have been great friends and business acquaintances for many years Matty Gosn worked on my boat Broadbill for a season when he was 15 years of age. That season we tagged a couple of hundred small and very active blacks and Matt never missed a beat on the trace. We shared many happy and humorous memories together in that ’92 season at Pt Stephens.

They are a famous fishing family Father Paul in his 35 Bertram Janel fished for the Botany Bay club for many years and most competitively I might add.

They are three generation fisherman and they are very good.

Nathan Gosn I rate as one of the best shark fisherman I can remember and there has been a few over fourty years. His consistency in catches has been amazing over along period of tournaments and time.

Brother Matt is not far behind if not as good. The lads have always targeted the mud wallopers and hold many records between them. These days they run the most successful Sylvania marina. The largest Bertram dealer in the country.

Well! It seems as though there may be another champ in the family and that is Nathan’s’ son Anthony

I can remember a younger Anthony on hands and knees catching specimens of tiny fish around the pontoon s at the marina or throwing soft plastics for hours.

Well the lad has excelled when fishing yesterday with Dad and Uncle Mat.

Check out six kilos of snapper caught on a soft plastic off Botany Bay by Anthony

    Well done Anthony

Other photos Uncle Matt and his sharks, check out the size of the boat..I'm frightened and worried about nightmares to night

  12. Unfortunately, Raider Peter Koch passed away yesterday after a fight with cancer.

Peter was a top bloke and loved his fishing. He also loved being a Raider.

If you have read any of my fishing reports, you will see that I was lucky enough to go out fishing with Peter many times and he was always cheerful even when suffering the ill effects of treatment. He never complained despite obviously not feeling the best. Peter's good mate "Pick-A-Box" Syd was one of those great friends of Peter and always went out of his way to take him out fishing whenever he could. Syd also did a lot to help Peter and his family over the last six months.

Peter Koch will be missed by many.

  13. FISHING ON BROADBILL WITH ET AND TETSUYA

Had a great day today fishing with ET and famous Japanese chef Tetsuya.

His restaurant in Sydney is very popular and recognised world wide as one of the best.

I have fished with Tetsuya a few times before and he has caught some pretty nice yellowfin to 50 kg with us. I have also fished with ET several times with Troy Casser Daley and a recent segment at Pt Stephens when we caught a paraplegic guy in a wheel chair his first marlin. That was a great personal thrill for us all that day We ended up with three marlin overall and a great segment was run on ET’s Escape program last year.

Today, the plan was to go tuna fishing but with 16 degree water it was agreed that kingfish would be a safer bet. We wanted a good quality sashimi fish and kings are in that catorgary. We have been very successful on the kings for the past fortnight and although smallish would get the yarn done.. So off to the peak we ventured in the 20 knot Sou Wester.

At first the kings were tough and had not schooled, however we persevered and caught several unders and then a few keepers.( the average fish at the moment is 4 to 5 kg, they are small, but they will also find their way to Tetsuya’s restaurant where he will prepare them on camera as sashimi for the show. It was hard to stay over the fish in the wind but by lunch time had caught enough on film to try something else.

We had caught a nice pinkie and a few jackets as a bit of variety. So we then head to the ever reliable flathead grounds and finished off the yarn with a reasonable catch of blue spot flathead.

Weather is major factor when it comes to a successful day and the early winds did make it tougher on the kingfish, but we ended up, with a little tenacity having a great day.

I find it hard to believe that ET has been a legendary footballer all his life, but barely has a scar on his face You gotta admit girls He’s a bit of a hunk!

Both ET and Tetsuya are beaut blokes to fish with and I will look forward to the segment on Escape in summer sometime.

ross thats mad about time someone with knowledge showed him how to fish i'm sick of watching him fish for barra i'll be watching for that episode

    cheers warren

  14. Jeez,

mate that's a bit harsh, just cause you buy a ticket doesn't mean you are buying your way into a great day on any species, every time. I remember your day and I also remember trying to talk you guys out of going tuna fishing but tuna it was against my advice.. I guess that's why they call it fishing and not catching...sometimes it is better to take advise as we see it rather than taking the risk on pie in the sky.

Spend a few more dollars and it will happen on our boats I can assure you of that.

ross mate i have the up most respect for glenn and yourself and all your hardwork you blokes put in to every trip and i do understand you can catch plenty one day and nothing the next i was just having a dig at ya i have never been on a fishing charter where someone has put in as much effort to try to get us on the money then you blokes my last time out glen defied all odds and stayed untill the sun went down and we travelled back in darkness and i will be back time and time again cause i have never learn't more from anyone else than you blokes looking forward to our next time out again

    cheers warren

  15. SNAPPER AND KINGS

Billfisher and Broadbill fished down south for snapper over the past few trips and at the Peak for kings

The southern grounds worked well for small reds up to a couple of kilos ( my favourites and the best table size) These days I personally enjoy immensely.Motors turned off, a little music on the stereo as the boats sits beautifully on anchor. Add to this formula some great snapper action fishing sp’s and floaters and you would not be dead for quids.

I headed to the Peak on Sunday and bagged out on kingfish in big numbers, but only kept a few as they are all “unders” .

We released 50 kings. Best techniques was the use whole pilchards or jigging. ( the bait technique out fished the jigs) We had many double hook ups on the pillies. It’s a shame they are all rats but alas one can only catch what’s there and by and large the customers love this active action.

We then hit the flathead grounds on the way home and caught 30 fish to 65 centimetres They were a mix or marbled and blue spots. By and large both boats had successful days without being spectacular

Plenty of bent rods and that’s smiles on dials and happy campers………….I guess.

  16. Hey guys,

Well after not fishing for a very long time me and a couple of mates decided to hit the harbour today as all the wives were at a kitchen tea...

We met up at Tunks ramp at 10.00am with the plan to catch some squid and then see if any kings were around.

Squid was not too hard and we had 9 within 45 minutes so we then decided to head to some of the Middle harbour wrecks...

Got to the first 2 locations and nothin was showing on the sounder but the Sailors bay wreck was showing heaps of life.

We threw down some squid and within seconds it was taken bu a 70cm king, then another and another.

We finished all our squid within 5 minutes and could still see heaps of kings on the sounder so decided to try 80 to 120 gram jigs and the kings went crazy for them..

We boated another 10 or so in 20 minutes and then they went jig shy.....

The biggest king went over 80cm but as normal they were winter kings in cold water so there did not fight to summer standards.....

All in all a good day though and it was good to be on the water again.

  17. What is the best way to start targetting Snapper out of Sydney Harbour? I need info on mainly what is good snapper habitat and there general movements.

For example- what is gravel patch and what does it look like on a sounder?

    - do you get snapper on top of hard reef or just the rubbish fish?

    - is drifting the way to go to find fish and new spots of your own or is anchoring and berleying

the only way to get quality fish

    - what depths are considered shallow, average and deep?

    - if you catch a few in close and the bite shuts down as the sun gets higher how deep do you fish

    - snapper seasons, is spring the best, do they go deeper in summer etc

Hope someone can point us in the right direction or you can tell me to pull my head in and work it out for myself :1prop: Cheers in advance Dave

hi dave the best way to catch snapper is to anchor and berley and floating your baits into the trail if the currents allow drifting can be productive as well up to about 60 meters gravel bottom or the edges of the reefs is where you'll find them but do yourself a favor and book a snapper session with ross or glen hunter and and mate you wont regret it they know all the ins and outs about catching good snapper because doing it is one thing experiencing is another

  18. Went out last night with BrettP to join other Raiders at the Hairtail Social and we believe we've uncovered one of the great scams of our time. After 4 previous trips between us without seeing a Hairtail, after last night we are now absolutely convinced that

Hairtail don't exist and are in fact a myth perpetuated by commercial interests!

Certain facts have come to light that suggest 'Hairtail' are a myth created by a consortium of industries selling wire, chemically sharpened gang hooks, polar fleece clothing and red glow sticks! This deception has been running since the early 1950's and as well as the support of the above industries, must be supported at the highest government levels in order to manage the popular media.

When quizzed late yesterday evening on board the Fishraider houseboat, Swordfisherman related tales of past years when the Hairtail were 'on'. Remarkably, this occurrence has only ever happened to 'someone else' and always in 'past years'. BrettP and I have strong suspicions that Stewy is part of the Government agency controlling and disseminating Hairtail misinformation. Then again, it could have been the rum that had affected Stewy's recollections.

WARNING: Alcohol makes you more susceptible to the hypnotic suggestion leading to chasing Hairtail. Clearly, the other inhabitants of the Raider houseboat were at great risk too!

Of course, you will all say that you've seen the photos of Hairtail. One word people... PHOTOSHOP!

Anyone claiming to have caught one of these mythical fish should be viewed with suspicion. Ask who they work for or whether they hold shares in glow stick manufacturing companies.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED... The truth is out there!

i belived for 3years that i caught one even ticked it off my 10 things to do before i die list only to watch dave xxxxhhhgggs jewfish dvd to find out it was a bloody pike eel :mad3:

  19. Hi Guys,

I have been doing rock fishing for long time and after watching endless fishing DVDs I managed to buy a small 4.1m fibre glass centre console boat. I know there are many many aspects to learn in boat fishing but first thing I need to figure out is how do I get to the the fishing grounds. I live at Homebush and I like to fish mainly in Pitt water and Sydney harbour, I am not sure where is best place to launch the boat to conserve the fuel for boat or is it more practical to launch from closest ramp and use water way to travel???. In terms of time and fuel efficiency I am not sure which is better, I though I will get some answers from veterans which will save lot of my money and time. So help me out guys, throw me any comments that's coming from your experience.

    Many Thanks

    Richard

    :1fishing1:

for sydney harbour/ middle harbour and manly there's roseville, rosebay, and tunks park at cameray all are good ramps for pitt water there's a good ramp just past mona vale or there's one just off the F3 at brooklyn to fish the hawksbury as for road or sea if you have a 2 stroke road is better or if you have a 4 stroke doesn't really matter hope this can break in the new boat with some nice fish

    cheers warren

  20. Hello there fishraider :biggrin2:

I have recently found out about LBG fishing and I’m very interested in giving it a go.

So would there be anyone that can give me a bit of knowledge about this exciting method of fishing.

What I would like to know is firstly what equipment do I need for LBG? I have a 12-20kg, 2.1 meters 1 piece rod at home with a spinning 7000 Odyssey reel (50 pound braided line). I’m guessing I need to change the line to prevent it from getting cut off in the rocks.

What hooks and sinkers etc do I need?

For bait I have been told that live bait is the best to use, what other bait is suitable?

I have also been told that fishing in the Tubes JB is an awesome place for LBG, but yesterday I got told by someone else that the tubes have been closed for a year now due to people littering. If the tubes are closed for LBG, what other locations do you guys recommend?

Thank you in advanced for all your answers and hopefully when I give it a go I get luckier then my attempts in beach fishing and Hawkesbury river fishing.

From an enthusiastic learning fisherman :1fishing1:

to the left of blue fish point is a good spot in the warmer months there's a nice ledge even with cover just be careful in a north/north easta i fish just off the point for kings and i see rock fisho's casting sp's just past the wash into a bread burley and catch and some good kings you have to climb down the cliffs the ropes are set into the rocks i see them take a quick photo and throw them back or fillet the kings straight away and pack them into their backpacks and climb back up the rocks

    hope this helps warren

  21. G'day Fellow Raiders,

Got a question that I am hoping someone may be able to help me with...

I have spent many fishing sessions on the beach and rocks, and normally can rely on catching a couple of shovel noses each session.

Here the question lies, I was at my local yesterday talking about fishing with 'rex hunt' - thought he knew more!

And he reckons that shovel nose sharks are great eating, he said that they are just like a big flattie...

Was wondering what everyone else thought... If they are good how do you clean and cook??

Thrown back many feeds for nothing else by the sound of it...

    Cheers

    Ben

hi ben stewy is right but if you want to clean the skin off without wasting any meat you clean them the same way as a pig get a sharp knife put it in boiling water for a minute then scrape it off as if your scaling it if the water is to hot you'll take off some fleash as well and make a mess of it and if to cold the skin won't remove at all but at the right temp comes off pretty easy

    cheers warren
