  1. hey guys,

i'm looking for a jewie set up.

Mainly for estuary fishing and i need to know some good rods, reels, braid and rigs etc.

Is the Abu Soron STX any good??

Any help would be very appreciated.

Dont know much about Abu, but the new D series Shimano Baitrunners are awesome  I have an 8000 size model and cant fault it.. I think a much better reel than the B series, the 12kg drag is just one of many new features..For $250 you would have yourself a reel well capable of handling any jewie ;)

  2. Probably more fluke than anything with the gar.. I'd chosen the spot in search of flathead. Somewhere with patches of weed and plenty of sand, maybe with a gutter to hold some deeper water. If they're about you'll probably see the flashes of silver, cast by sight and you've got a good chance of hooking up. Having said that their are probably better ways to catch more gar if you only intend to bait them, using floats etc, but I just like the feeling of fooling them into eating a lure. They don't go particularly hard, but they apparently taste pretty good if you can get enough of them.

Stippy, I myself have had success with Gars on plastics, although I did modify them somewhat lol.. I berlied a heap of sea gars up with bread down at Jervis bay, and noticed they were attacking my 3 inch power minnow. So I snipped the tail off and threaded it on one of those little green blackfish hooks, pinched small bit of split shot about 200mm up the leader, hey presto ;) landed a dozen big ones and lost plenty more.. They couldnt get enough eh.. whether that was a fluke im not sure, havent been in that situation since ;)..

  3. Hey Raiders

Was just wondering whether any of you new of any good rod builders around Sydney?

Ive had a Sage, 4 piece, 6 wt fly rod ready to build for a few years now, and thought i better get off my a*& and get it built..

I have the blanks, snake guides, struble reel seat, butt and cork grip.. Just need a good builder to finish it off :)

Thought this would be a good place to ask around, any info would be much appreciated, cheers

  4. Nice going on the Salmon.. what lure did the damage??

    JG

salted pillies on a running rig done the damage bro...

Congratulations on the Catch. Good to see the schools are starting to arrive.

In terms of eating though, I disagree. There are definantly ways that you can make the "edible", however compared to most other table fish, Australian salmon are near the bottom of the list.

Indeed they are near the bottom of the list, but it takes alot to deter me from enjoying fresh seafood, regardless of the species;)..Growing up in NZ may have something to do with it, we eat some pretty strange seafood over there ,,, lol

  5. Decided to have a flick down Maroubra beach last night, hopefully for a Salmon or two.. With a 2-3 foot swell, slight oof shore breeze and a 6.21pm high tide, the chances looked good. Found a gutter out in front of the surf club, sure enough right at the top of the tide, bagged three good fish around 65 cm. Kept two for the smoker and let the other one go, all in all a good quick session. These fish are so underated eh, when bled and cleaned straight away, salted and smoked they are primo :)

  6. Hey guys n girls..

I Just received a newsletter from BoatBits, a website I subscribed to.. Anyway I thought it would be a good idea spread the word to whoever i can, this place being a good start..

Im not one for politics, but when my passion is threatened by stupid decisions made by these one eyed idiots, the least i can do is stick up for my rights.. The worst thing is, I cant even vote here as I am still a New Zealand citizen,, very frustrating..

The following is copied and pasted from the newsletter I received, please take the time to read it and share your views,, thanks

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION

    PRESS RELEASE

    PROPOSED MARINE PARK CLOSURES

    Monday 8th August

Businesses Australia wide need to be aware of what is happening to our coastline with regard

to marine park closures. If you are unaware, as are many other people, of the processes

that HAVE ALREADY been put into place by the Labor government in a deal struck with

the Greens Party, then you need to read this press release as it will hopefully inform you of

the urgency of the situation. Please look at the following map

http://www.fishingterritory.com/pictures/Marine-Park-Closures-Map.pdf and you will see that closures

suggested cover excessively large parts of the Australian coastline. If these marine park closures

come into affect, businesses and families not only stand to lose a substantial portion of our

fishing and recreational coastlines, but also the revenue that these areas generate.

The Labor government have sprung these closures on us just prior to the election, giving

businesses very little time to gain a full understanding of the far reaching ramifications

that this proposal will have on industry across Australia.

Don’t assume that it is just the fishing and boating industry! If you have a careful look at

the map you will notice that many of these proposed areas can easily be linked to already

established national parks, something that will surely happen if Labor returns to power. We

will then lose the beaches and surrounding waterways as well. The effect will then be even

    more far reaching.

We understand that marine parks are a necessity. If we intend to protect our Australian

coastlines and provide for our future generations, we need to establish sustainable policies

using scientific evidence gained by appropriate environmental studies and consultation

involving the correct people, NOT by randomly drawing lines out into the ocean with a

complete disregard for the businesses and people that it will affect.

In Mackay on Tuesday (July 27) Opposition Leader Tony Abbott announced the Coalition’s

policy. He announced there would be an immediate halt to Labor’s marine park roll-out so

that processes could be restructured to ensure a better say for all anglers and recreational

enthusiasts in park design and management.

He also announced that the Coalition’s Fisheries Minister would be a full partner in the

process with the Minister for Environment, and all decisions would have to be jointly agreed.

The full Coalition policy is available at www.liberal.org.au.

This issue should not be a political debate but unfortunately this has been used as a platform for

Labor to secure votes to remain in power. We don’t have a lot of time left before the upcoming

Election Day so the time to act is now.

Please forward this information to as many people as possible to ensure they are aware

of the proposed changes and can make an informed choice on 21 August 2010.

  7. lol, reminds me of my mate who was fishing for puka in NZ, thinking he had one on, only to find a shimano tekota on a backbone rod with a puka still attached to the end. Washed it down, opened up the reel to find it still in mint condition... :)

  8. hey Reyzor,

I have often found the fishing in the lower harbour this time of year to be hard, Fish are a nomadic species eh, just because they are not there one month, it dosent mean they wont be there the next...But if theres baitfish close by, the bigger fish shouldnt be too far away :)

Being at the right place at the right time will always produce results when fishing, land based or by boat..

  9. hey breambucket..

If your gonna be spinning for trout, it would pay to have a few Rapala CD3 & 5's and F3 & 5's in ranbow and brown trout patterns.. They're expensive but trust me theyre worth there weight in gold..

Ive used them the last few trips back home in a few nth island rivers, and they go off.

I grew up using older type spinners, favs being.. size 3 green, red and blue veltics, black N gold and black 7g tobys, dandys and zeds, and size 2 & 3 Mepps black fury's for brownies..

They were good, but they just dont compare to the hard bodies you can get these days. Soft plastics would be worth a try as well, although finding a river with relatively little current this time of year would be pretty hard, may work well in deeper, slower pools, or even lakes..

You will also have to fork out a fair bit of cash for a trout liscence, and check the regulations of your fishing region, many rivers will be closed this time of year due to spawning but there should be a few places worth checkin out..

As for snapper fishing off canterbury this time of year, id say your chances would be pretty slim bro.. water will be far too cold, maybe try for some blue Moki.. :)
