I watched a mate jig a 107cm king outta the banks over the weekend while i was pulling just legals... gave a good account for itself. So the fish are there at the moment. Take care with any stationary lines thou.. we lost a few jigs to jackets when people got lazy arms.
Hey guys planning a bit of a trip in 3 weeks when HSC finishes...... always wanted to fish for big jervis bay kings like Neil did in Adventure Bound. We havent locked in the trip yet so i was wondering if now is a good time to chase the hudlums down there, any infomation on the marine parks or anything which you recon we should know, probably be fishing out of my 5.6m caribbean and just downrigging around those big headlands like neil was doing.
any info would be awesome.

Trolled them up by sight on where the bust ups came up using a 6" hard body. Can't remember brand but was using a metallic blue one. It was interesting on gutting the one I kept, its stomach was completely empty. So hopefully if the bait sticks around they will stay around the hacking to fill up

Got out Sat for only a short while. Straight up a nice bust up thou a little sporadic off Jibbon beach. Spent some time there and pulled 3 nice salmon. Wanted to poke my nose outside so left em' but what a mistake that was ey.. Washing machine out there a bit down the coast. Haven't been out much lately so couldn't say how inside is going.

As A.dawg said bream on plastics landabsed in the Hacking aint easy. I have only caught a decent number and size using bait and burley from my boat. There are a few spots inlcuding up past swallow rock and also south west arm where i have had success although these are a little harder to access than the wharves (such as wally's or lilli pilli baths, etc).
I think if you are limited to fishing off the wharves or even to mainbar/bundeena then maybe change your tactics to going for some squid or whiting, jackets or even flathead. At the common wharves and at bundeena these are more prevalent and easier to catch than the bream. maybe try bait fishing rather than plastics. nippers always do the trick in the hacking. an old favourite of mine when i was land-restricted was to pump nippers at mainbar then fish off the end of the flats into the deeper main channel. this usually produced gud results with whiting and flathead. similarly, squid can 'always' (unlucky if you dont at least catch one) from budeena wharf or wallies at night on jigs. just make sure you use quality to increase you chances.
6lb fire and 8 lb leader should be working ok as this is a relativley light set up. if you still dont ahve much luck try 4lb line and 4lb flouro leader. sizing down has always increased my big hits but also increased number of bust offs too depedning on territory. i have found that the hacking fish are very sensitive to weight of tackle.

i say slimies being alot around lately and decent size ones too.
was at cronulla today for a surf and just about to go in
when about 200metres from shore seen some splashes.
then stopped and watched and it happened a few times
so waited 15mins b4 i went in was a bit parranoid then.
i dont think it was dolphins as it was only 1 splash at a time and as far as i know and have
seen dolphins are in groups.
makes you wonder
On the dolphin note.. was out Sunday morning down Marley and Wattamolla and everywhere in between and there were plenty of dolphins about heading up the cliffs. Great fun watchin them jump alongside and not to far from the boat when we were underway. Considering how many i saw (at least 30 over an hour or two) it is very possible there were dolphins off cronulla.

Hey mate I too am an engineer and like others have had a downturn in the level of business. Luckily I'm just having a few 3 day weekends (meaning i can fish Mondays instead of on the busy weekend!!!) to cater for it and am able to keep my job.
Keep your head up, things will change. The most annoying thing for me is that the decrease in income through the lost days ends up being felt harder because I'm keen to get out and fish (i.e. spend money) on those days lol..

Hey mate nice catch there. Im finding that the flatties are biting consistently off cronulla (or moreso the national park) at the moment. How deep were you fishing and were you a bit south?
I went out on Sunday but had to turn back in after only about half an hour at most. I have never seen somebody throw up so much from a messy swell as much as my old man did haha. Unfortunate as the fish were biting well.

I've read that the red rock cod and other rock cod are poisonous but i've been handling them with my bare hands. Is that something I shouldnt do? I havent been able to get a definitive answer yet.
Keep on doing it and when one of those buggers spikes you you will never handle them with just your hands again. Poor mans lobster wont make you sick from a spike but they bloody hurt..

I have only ever caught two flatties off the sand near the boat ramp at wonny using plastics (probably fished it ten times). However if you head up past the estate towards the needles on a high tide then you should have more success on the sand flats up there. Some nice fish to be had and its great casting against the bank and seeing fish take the lures in the shallows.

Thanks for the explanation as I had also been wondering about this.
IMO it would still be worthwhile without a prize. Its great to see some of the fish people pull up and for me even without a prize I would definitely enter if I caught a decent fish.

I will be heading out for a night jew sess in the boat soon since i have noticed a fair bit of bait activity inside the Hacking of late as I go out. I sure hope I can post a similar report

Only saw one charter and that was when he was heading back up from further south. We trolled the cliff line all the way back from when we finished drifting at marley both minnow and skirt. Not a touch. I think it was just too windy and choppy for any surface action and even if there was any about you wouldn't have seen it.

We all have the fishless sessions but when they start a biting then u will know that it is all worth the wait.
Keep at it, since it sounds like u are trying the methods we all know produce when they are on the bite.
I'm sure as with others; it took me a long time to start to find productive grounds and even then they still have thier off days. Not soon enough if you keep it up it will come.
Maybe look to another raider for a trip out and a few pointers.
Otherwise, since ur located 41000 ft obove the earth maybe drop down to 500ft and then try find ur reef from there.. at least that will provide relief in the meantime.

Hey all,
Went out today in the windy conditions for a bottom bash down the cliffs between bundeena and marley. Fished mostly in about 30m of water using pillies and some slimy fillets.
Picked up 6 flathead to 45cm all nice n fat. Would have dropped about that many more of same weight with a few poor hook ups unfortunately..
Sorry no photos as i have already filleted them adn they are waiting to be cooked. All in all not a bad day out considering the wind and chop and happy to get a decent feed.

Motoring around the Whitsundays with a fishing rod which I couldn't use sounds like a recipe for disaster and lovers tiffs haha. I can already see the arguments.. If you find a compromise on that kind of trip i reckon the rest of your marriage will be easy

For some reason I had not thought of a pre-work fish. I will have to give that a go alhtough i fear I will never get to work lol..
But for me, Port Hacking too. So close to home and yet challenging to find the good fish. Cant get over the clarity and cleanliness of the water once past lilli pilli on a good day either.
Port Hacking River between 5am and 7am on a weekday summer morning.
I would love to fish Papua New Guinea.

Hey all,
Another day out in the Port Hacking with a nice mixed bag for dinner. Some fun fishing was had. There wasn't a high number of fish caught although those that were caught were of good quality.
Used both nippers and trolled a few lures inside for the following results. Just tryin to prove to myself that quality fish can still be caught in bad conditions. Better than sittin inside anyway. Rained on an off early and the wind would surely have being pushing through with 35kt gusts
a few smaller versions of those taken home. the take home was
39cm PB whiting
happy bout that one.57cm flathead nice and fat and obviously hungry since i trolled it up an a 6" minnow haha
41cm tailor. nice size for the pan
and a 50cm ray
so all in all. nice result for the day

Looks to be the same hammerhead i saw lurkin off the back of shark island two fridays ago. either that or it has a twin of what appears to be indentical size.. nice cathc.
