  1. haha on a squid jig as well?

thanks for the replies, think i'll get a seabass rod instead! or maybe a custom, has anyone had a custom rod done up before and how much am i looking at as a minimum?

    Cheers,

    Will

  2. Has anyone had any experience with the japanese Egi rods? They're designed for squid but i was thinking of getting one for use on kings. The only thing I'm not sure about is it's power.

    Cheers,

    Will

  3. for a graphite rod off the rocks there aren't a huge number of options available under $100 (assuming you want to split your $200 evenly). Maybe have a look at the starlo stix shorespin? it's around that price and is graphite and fibreglass composite. I think it's also only 9ft as well.

The cheapest full graphite rod I can think of at 12ft is the Daiwa Heartland at $180. From there you have the Nitro Sniper 10' at $330, Daiwa Emblem Pro at $270+ depending on length.

As for the reel have a look at the Sienna/Sedona/Sahara. High ratio which is good for spinning and within your price range.

  4. Saw tiny baitfish jumping around near Juno point yesterday. First cast with a blade was onto one as soon as it hit the water. And I mean first cast with a blade ever. We didn't bother chasing them around - but the tailor are there.

blades are an expensive way to catch tailor, just use a metal slice!

  5. great pics ray, i'm just a bit confused as to exactly where the gutter is in the second photo, is it the big gap? where would you cast when you locate the gutter? straight into the middle or around the edges? if its not too much trouble can someone circle the areas in the second photo where you would cast?

    Cheers,

    Will

  6. Hi all,

I'm heading up there in a months time and I was hoping to get an idea of some good places to fish and bait to use? I'll be landbased and am interested in somewhere safe to cast a line for bream, flathead, whiting etc. I wouldn't mind fishing off the beach or off the rocks (if there's a safe place to do so). So if anyone has some pointers, please let me know!

    Cheers,

    Will

  7. thanks for the advice guys! i've thought about stinger hooks, looks like trebles are the way to go? i went out and bought some poppers so looking forward to giving them a go!

as for my sp technique; i don't know about that hahaha might not get any bites at all if i switch to a true plastic!

  8. Hi raiders,

I've been searching for a new rod. I'm looking to spend up to $300, but before buying it I'd like to learn more about the mechanics. If anyone can shed some light on the below I'd be very grateful!

    1. Rod taper: how does this affect the way I need to fish? what difference does it make if I get a slow taper vs a fast taper?

    2. Technique specific actions: are there major differences between rods that are technique specific and a general purpose graphite rod? eg. The Daiwa Cielo is specifically made for dropshotting, if I use it for normal bait and lure fishing, is it less effective and why? Generally I use a sinker straight through to the hook for bait and use light darter style jig heads for sp fishing.

    3. Line rating: getting a 2-4kg rod or a 3-6kg rod, is there a difference in casting distance if I choose one over the other assuming I use 6lb/8lb braid?

    4. Guides: everyone knows that Fuji SiC's, Gold cermets and recoil guides are the best, but from a usage perspective, will it matter if I have Alconites? I heard that Alconites can take more punishment than the top of the line guides(aside from REC's)

    5. Reel seat: rod advertisers always claim they have this fuji reel seat or that fuji reel seat, what difference is there from a usage point of view, doesn't it just hold the reel in place? Obviously some are more comfortable than others, but are there any other differences?

    6. Rod tip: i've used some rods with very soft tips and it seems that I miss a lot of strikes, but I've also read that stiff tips aren't that great for lure fishing. Whenever I feel a bite, I lift my rod gently but this doesn't seem to work with the soft rods that I have, should I just stick to stiffer rods or should I change my habits to get more out of my gear?

Sorry about the length of the post, I look forward to the replies!

    Cheers,

    Will

  9. i've been hearing a lot of good things about these reels from everyone on the site, just wondering how much one of these would set me back? and also, i plan to use it for soft plastic fishing, so can anyone tell me how much it weighs in the 2000 size? thanks!

  10. Thats correct about fireline, i don't go past 10lb with it.

Tufline is ok but it frays a lot, Suffix is very good, i find it better the heavier you go, fins is also good but does need a little bit or wearing in as said. A brand i found in north queensland i think it might of been called amnesia, i've got some in 20lb and its fantastic, never caused me any grief.

What are you mainly using it for?

    Cheers

    Josh

thanks for the replies guys, just so my question isn't that general, i'm using this line on a spinning reel, and i'm hoping to use it for:

    1. Off the rocks; spinning metals, bait fishing for drummer etc

    2. Off the beach; soft plastics, metals and bait fishing

    thanks for all your help!

  11. Hi raiders,

I've heard that fireline is only really effective in the lower weight ranges and that it gets too stiff once you move past a certain rating. I'm looking at buying 14lb and 20lb braid, what brands do you all suggest? I'm not looking to spend too much either, but i'm open to suggestions!

    cheers,

    Will

  12. thanks for the comprehensive reply slinky!

i'm looking at getting 1 of the following reels:

    Daiwa Exceler Plus 3000; 4.7:1

    Shimano Stradic FI 4000: 5.8:1

    Shimano Sahara FB 4000: 6.2:1

all of these reels have the same body size so the spool diameter would be the same i believe?

I'm mostly concerned with getting the right tool for the job, the reel will be used off the rocks and for some of my heavier soft plastic work. How much more suitable will the stradic be for this type of fishing? will the retrieve ratio on the Exceler be too slow to entice a strike? Is the Sahara's retrieve ratio too fast?

    thanks for your help raiders!

  13. Hi all,

i'm looking at getting a new reel which I will be using for spinning metals, how important is it to have a high retrieve ratio and will it make a difference in the number of fish i catch?

I've heard that a you should rip a lure back as fast as possible, but does it really make that much of a difference?

    cheers,

    Will
