  1. Took the boat out on Sunday and went to one of my haunts about 20 minutes from home on the Camden Haven River

Managed a couple flatties and a horse bream 43.5cm...smashing my old PB

I had a camera phone with me and managed to get a couple pics out of it after deleting everything I could to at least get the measurements to show it as I left my camera at home [B)]and didn't want to kill the fish.I kept in the live well for a little while and a kayak fisherman came around the corner. I asked if he had a camera and wouldn't mind taking a couple photos as I had left mine at home. Andre obliged and took a few and was able to contact me on private message on one of the kayak fishing sites and now I have photos to show me with it at least.

Awesone catch for the area and one that will take a long time for me to beat.

    Couple photos..

  2. Mullet would have been what the jew were eating when the mullet were running.

When they finish fresh whole tailor & blackfish come into there own.

When it warms up it's time for some squid. Beachworms work well on the beach side of the wall.

If you can find some stinky pike they will outfish all of the above except when the mullet are running & the jew are switched on to them only.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Grant.

    Thanks for the tips.

  3. Heyas,

I have a mate that has come up trumps on 2 out of 3 occasions nailing 40lb Jewies, he has been using live mullet, I can't seem to get hold of the live mullet all that easily and legally on the night.

Do you think live beach worms would work just as well from a break wall?

    Thanks

  4. Walked down to the beach to give my new spinning outfit a go, managed a few legal size Tailor, 9 in all. Currently being salted and then smoked tomorrow.

Also mixed in with 1 nice solid Sambo.

Not a bad feed for about an hours fishing.

  5. Not sure how mechanical minded you are but there are plenty of motor parts diagrams on the net.

Dumb question but you are giving the rope a sharp quick start to the pull as that is what locks up the pull start mechanism so you can turn over the motor. A slow pull will not lock it up. Once locked up you can then pull it firmly and turn the motorover. Some motors ned a constant pull as they use centrifugal force to lock up.

Look for your model and have a look at the pull start mechanism.

Generally is a pully with the rope wound around it and a central mechanism that has pawls on it that extend and lock when you pull the cord sharply. There isn't many parts involved but be warned if you consider pulling it apart you will have a tensioned 10 foot long spring to contend with. Can cut hands and fly out and get your eye. Be caefull. Many pull starts are modular so you can pull them off he top of the motor and see the pawls and see if they are sticking so you can just free them up or see if there is a parts ovioulssly showing wear and you dont have to pull it apart any further. Just be carefull as some just fall apart once removed from the motor.

If you pull it down any further make sure you release the spring tension slowly and count the number of turns required to retension it correctly.

If you tell us what brand size , year and model number the motor is someone may have solved the same issue before or know where the diagram on the net is

Ok, it could be that I am not pulling it fast enough, it is happening when I pull it to test if it is locked in, sounds like I just need to pull it fast straight off the bat.

Will keep an eye on it.

    Thanks Dan

  6. I have been given a Berkley Saltwater drop shot ford for chrissy which is 10'6 long which is suited to a line class of 4-7kg 10-40gm. I want to use it for spinning off the beach for tailor so will probably load it up with 14lb line.

Any recommended reel for use on this rod. Have tried to find a piccy on the net.

I have a Shimano Ultegra 2500 which doesn't get much use anymore, do you think If i spooled this up with some heavier braid it would be sufficient?

  7. Not sure if the subject really makes to much sense but will try to explain.

I have a Pull start motor and sometimes when pulling the starting rope the rope just slides in and out not catching to start the engine. Eventually after a few pulls it will latch on and I am able to start.

Is this normal with pull starts? as previously I had a key start motor.

  8. Went for a late fish today in the Hastings River. Before launcing I dropped into BCF and got myself a Mud Crab trap to see how I went.

Set a trap and went and fish for a few hours, on the way back checked the trap and it had a nice mud crab in it, my first.

He was dinner tonight cooked up in blackbean/garlic sauce and rice.

  9. How many Mud Crab traps are you allowed to have out at any one time, just 1?.

I had only one with me today because I think it is only 1 in NSW, but others on the water seemed to have like 5 muddie traps out.

  10. Ahhh,

Its nice to be able to drive only a short distance from home and get into some good fishing.

I am still waiting to miss Sydney since the move here early in the year, somehow I don't think its gonna happen. :1prop:

Was a slow start with nothing wanting the poppers, although the sun was already up high and it wasn't even 7 o'clock!.

Switched over to a betts spin and finally got into nice little bass of 34cm.

Continued along the river bank and got smashed, gave a good fight on the 8lb line, finally netted the beast which came in at 447mm a new PB for me!.

Continued along again got a couple small bass, and then again into a good tussle, landing another nice bass of 423mm, I couldn't believe my luck.

Managed one more after that a 380mm, then the wind came up and my day had already been made, so headed back to the ramp.

Was a top day smashing my previous PB!

  11. Hi,

Looks like my battery in the boat is now dead, it had a truck battery in it when I bought it, when looking in the cells there is white floating bits which appear to have broken off from somewhere.

I am thinking I should get a marine battery as a replacement, would one of these be enough to start a 30hp Mariner Pull Start and run live well pumps in short bursts and run the nav lights when required?

Not looking at deep cycle, too expensive for the moment and want to get back on the water.

    Thanks

    Dan

  12. What a good weekend and ADO, managed to get out fishing all 3 days.

First day was on the Camden Haven tried a new spot and berleyed up for a while using no frills oats, this is my standard burley mix with a touch of oil for scent and they sink well.

Sat there for a little while and the burley kicked in, started hooking into a few small bream and the got a nice flatty as well as a couple bream.

Next day hit the Camden haven again but this time went up one of the creeks off queens lake and managed a nice 35cm Bream and a 50cm Flatty, released the bream as he didn't look very healthy at all, very skinny and sluggish.

Today was on the Hastings river, started out a bewdiful morning, travelled up the Maria river attempted to drift fish for a little while for a small flounder which was released.

Little bit more drifting and hooked up on a nice pan size flathead, in the well he went.

Anchored up as the wind was howling an blowing me along to quickly, stayed for a little while and managed a nice 35cm Bream, then the wind got to much and decided to seek shelter.

The travel back wasn't very nice 1/2 meter chop in some parts making for a wet ride home.

Good weekends fishing and able to check out a few new spots as well, in the end managed 5 Bream and 4 flathead from memory, I could be missing some!

Not Sure what sort of fish this is?

  13. Where would I find the thermostat?.

I think it may have one as the water cooling does not seem to come out until after a few seconds, I think it the thermostat that holds the cooling back until hot enough?

Found these inside the motor, any ideas what they are?

I am not that mechanical, only learnt what to do with spark plugs and a little bit more from my Grandfather when we fished together he was always doing things with the plugs to get them going, as well as spraying flammable stuff like wd40 inside the carby, not sure what that does though but it seemed to work for him:)

  14. Hi Dan, that is an older engine than the one I was talking about. Your engine is US made detuned 40HP and is a great little engine and is a MUCH better engine than the 30HP Merc/Mariner of the last few years. Ignore the thing about the ignition system, your engine runs a CDM system which has not given us any real trouble at all.

The plugs are the right ones, but the gap is too big. Put two new plugs ones in, make sure the sprak is capable of jumoing 1/2 an inch, make sure the thermostat is there and working right, run XD-100 oil and you will be fine.

    Cheers,

    Huey.

    Well,

I put 2 plugs in this afternoon although the boat started fine even with the old ones today, but it did sound a little better with the new ones in, but could be my imagination I guess.

Will have to see how it goes on the water this weekend.

Once again thanks for your advice all.

    Dan
