  1. Same thing happened to me with a Kingfish.  Tried for ages to revive it but no good.  I then threw it away but kept floating around where we were fishing.  This upset the 2 kids I had with me seeing this thing so I pulled it out to throw back when we left.  Sure enough an inspector came along.  I explained what had happened and he was very understanding.  Took my details then a couple of weeks later got a warning for "keep under sized fish".  My friends and family think this is a great joke because I return everything.  Anyway them the rules.

  2. Nats the Jews off Cronulla and the Hacking are very quite at the moment. Now with the NE wind blowing upwelling occurs bringing the dirty looking cold water current into the bay (yes cronulla is a bay). Off the coast the water is clearer but still cold. This is what I think is causing the slow off Cronulla beach at the moment. Now in the river system the water is clear and warm BUT there are so many people using so many motorised boats in the shallow system scares the Jewies off. Last night, full moon, change of tides, squid everywhere but the boats going up and down the river and if they were moored the lights and noise travel was unbelievable. Better off in a system like the georges river were it is a deeper and larger system (not too many skiers under captain cook bridge haha). This is my theory. Hope this helps.

PS the change of tide was about 10.30pm last night. I think you left too early. Just a thought but a nice fresh slab of salmon thrown out may have produced something. Just a thought.

  3. Sunline castaway braid. It is expensive but I was given a spool two years ago and still using it. It is my go to rod when throwing a lot of light hard body lures around. Never had a wind knot.

  4. Mr Jewgaffer,

I thought it was you. The knowledge you imparted on fishing in our little chat made me fully aware I was speaking with someone special. I now wish I had introduced myself properly and shook your hand (on a rethink perhaps not ha ha. An in joke between Byron an me)....Just to wet your lips a young bloke by the name of Simon keeps pulling up in his car, pulling out a large Jew, says gday, cleans it and goes. Last week he brought down a 24 kilo sucker to clean. Claims he gets them out of the Port and he is land based. Some serious stalking may be on the agender. Hope you stay healthy Byron and remember mate you dont feel a thing when the reel begins to sing.

    regards

  5. Hi Fellow Raiders

I have a pull start 40hp Mercury out board about 5 years old. Does any one out there know if you can adapt it to electric start. I also wish to install navigatioal lights and fish finder so if some one can also recommend an installer, hopefully someone from southern syddney it would be appreciated.

  6. Great report Roberta. Thanks for taking the time. The water still dirty????Think i may delay my north coast trip another month or so. Very interested in the set up of the tinny. Am currently bringing mine up to scratch. Have fun at the triathalon, man I do not miss doing those. All that time training when I should have been fishing or surfing ha.

  7. Thanks all for your responses. I recently broke my 7' shimano graphite rod (damn weed) but am now using my boat rod a sliverstar 6' elite spinning rod. I have a shimano slade 1000 on this with sunline super pe braided dyneema line. Metal lure TT switch blade 1/8 or a sqidgey 1.5grm jig head with 4" soft plastic. I do not intend to throw too far but more along the river edge for bream etc. I do notice that the base of the spool is a little more built up than the rest. Will strip it and reattach more tightly. Looking at upgrading once I have an idea of the set up.

  8. Really getting into some land based lure fishing. Started using 6lb braid but keep getting tangles when throwing out. I have reduced the amount of line, tried every fifth throw tightened the line by holding the line on retrieving and heavier lures but still getting tangles. I was thinking that the 1000 egg beater may be too small. Any ideas people.

  9. Over a few beers last night the discussion turned to big flathead. I had recently caught a biggun just over a metre. A few points were discussed. I spoke to a Professor at the fisheries (a real good bloke) today. He informed me that not all flathead that big are female BUT it is a very low percentage that are male and that the big females will reproduce until they die. In fact the older and bigger the more they reproduce. Now I feel bad about eating her.....just kidding.

  10. Hi Raiders

Thinking of doing some night fishing at Cronulla Beach this weekend. I have chased squid up and down the port hacking with little result for the effort. I was wondering does anybody know of a bait shops that supplies fresh squid in southern suburbs.

  11. Spent a few days earlier in the week down past Ulladulla and had a serious thirst for some beach fishing. Got down and conditions looked pretty perfect with high tide in the early morning and evening.

Returned to a beach which has always produced good bags of bream and whiting and there was a pretty killer gutter that must have stretched for just under 100m along the beach. This photo isnt brilliant because its only taken at mid-tide so the gutter isnt quite in full swing but you can get the gist of it:

    post-8798-1232768432_thumb.jpg

Anyway, probably around four or five 3-4 hour sessions along this gutter using pippis, beach worms and lures only got me about 4 barely legal whiting, a few flatties and a few small salmon. I did get busted off by what I think was probably a monster bream but nothing to show for that...

Still cant work out why such a good looking spot fished so poorly, but I'll be back for further investigation next week I reckon..!

Been surfing up and down the coast lately. The water has become very cold with the strong n/e winds pushing the warm water off the surface and the cold water rising to the top(forgot what this is called). I reckon this turns the fish off the bite. The southerly winds have returnted and will bring back the warmer water and hopefully also the fish.

  12. Fished Cronulla beach last night. Me and about 20 other fisho's. Right tide but very little water movement. Fresh squid and pillies was bait but only ended up catchinging a couple of chopper tailor, 4 shovel nose sharks and a small crab. Was hoping for maybe a small jew but just ended up wasting good squid. Any of those other 20 fisho's catch anything????

  13. Fantastic...As a fellow fisho on a similar quest, congrats. You have done good. Rejoice now in the fact that you now belong to that rare breed, jewwie hunter. Now anytime conversation turns to fishing you can retell the tale of your catch whilst others will listen with envy.

    WELL DONE

  14. would like to try something new and troll up some tailor on the port hacking on the weekend as i've heard it can be pretty productive! I have never done this before and have a few q's.

    1) What kinds of lures should i try? I have heard they'll eat anything, but what's best?

    2) What speed should i be trolling at?

    3) what line strength/ tackle setups work?

    4) How far out the back of the boat should i have the lures?

    5) any good spots around porth hacking/bate bay?

    Cheers!

    1. wonder wobbler (or similiar)

    2. Slow, about the speed of rowing

    3. does not really matter

    4. 10 meters or a little more

    5. South West arm, yowie bay

Have fun. i like to use a light line and flicky rod for fun but if trying for keepers a hand line so i can feel the lure for speed and weed

  15. Hi fellow Raiders

Went out trying to get squid on Tuesday night (not one). Whilst casting a couple of kayakers paddled past and one fell out. Asked if he needed a hand as the others had stopped some distance away. He told me he was right and after he got back on thanked me anyway then told me he was a little worried beccause he had seen a couple of bug bull sharks up south west arm on the weekend. Now I do not know if it was the same shark he seen twice or what but just though I would mention it here

To tell the truth the guy said he say 9 sharks in the arm of Port Hacking but I thought that was a bit of a stretch. Reading the info maybe he was right as the conditions there were ideal.
