  1. My brother has just moved into a tidal waterfront, sand flats at low tide, a bit over a metre at high tide.

Just wondering if you berley regularly at around the same tide everyday, if fish will start hanging around? permanently?

Does anyone with waterfronts do this to attract fish for fishing purposes?

  2. emetic, because of the smaller lures used I prefer spin gear. Depending on the size of river your fisihng a 1-3kg, 6-7ft spin stick with a 2000 size reel loaded with 4-6lb braid and 6-8lb fluro leader is all you need.

Good luck in Canada, would love to see some photos if you catch a few.

cheers dwag, will go on a hunt for a spin stick then!

will take some snaps when hopefully i get into a few, I'm moving to pemberton (near whistler) next week, the river fishing in the mountains up there is meant to be A grade.

  3. nice catch.

i am currently in BC, canada and am planning on spinning some rivers and streams over summer. What is your setup? not really sure what weight line etc I should be fishing for river trout as i haven't really done it before.

Do you think a light baitcaster setup would be an advantage compared to a spin setup for this style of fishing?

  4. Hi all,

Am currently living in British Columbia, Canada and am planning some freshwater fishing once the snow melts off a little.

Just wondering how the success rates of spin fishing and fly fishing compare around these parts?

I have never fly fished before, but am considering getting some lessons, otherwise I might just pick up a baitcaster combo and through some lures around. Being a newbie to fly fishing, would I be more successful sticking to spinning? or is the learning curve not too severe for me to be catching fish in a reasonable time frame?

  5. well dont fellas, awesome day.

Im just wondering, are stripies any good to eat at all? If you were to bleed and ice them down etc.

I reckon they are great on the tooth.

cut into thick slabs / fillets roll in cajun spice on all sides of slab, sear edges of slab so that just the edge is cooked and the inside is raw. Then slice into thin sashimi style slices.

  6. Hi Folks,

headed out to Botany on the 11/01/09 at about 6pm motored across to Silver beach at about 6:45pm and parked approx 50meters out from the swim net in shallow water and unfortunately the algie stuff was still around which I'm sure cut our catch in half. armed with only chicken breast we managed to catch 2 Trevally one was about 50cm very nice fight on light gear and the other was around the 35cm mark suprisingly caught in the shallows however I did burly hard with chicken pellets and tuna oil. Other then those 2 we did manage 9 legal bream with one going 40cm. I cant wait until that algie stuff disappears. I also find Silver beach to produce very well at dusk into night have had absolutely no luck there during the middle of the day have never tried early morning, Is early morning any good there for bream?

    Cheers,

    BSJ

hi i have snorkelled there a few times in the last couple of weeks. once in the morning (around 8am), once in the early afternoon and once for a couple of hours on dusk.

from what i saw there appeared to be alot more fish (especially flatties) on the time i went just before dusk. spotted around 8 good size flatties i one section between 2 rock walls in a half hour period.

in the morning there were a few bream around when i first got in around 8am however they soon dissapeared, and only saw 1 flatty in 2 hours of swimming around.

during the middle of the day was the least busy as far as fish life went.

Both days were similar tide (high and dropping) so that could not be the variable. My thoughts were that the fish feel safer coming into the shallows in the dark, ie dawn and dusk and retreat to deeper waters during the day time. the other variable was that the dusk session was overcast and in a southerly, so the water was calm, and the other sessions were sunny with NE winds.

    any thoughts?

  7. a mate offered to take me out in his boat to target some sharks.

I always like to try and get a feed when i go fishing, although it doesn't happen as much as i would like :05:

does anyone have any info on what shark species go alright on the table if caught and what ones i should release to fight again.

    cheers

  8. After watching a few of the old Berkley DVD's I decided to get more interested in using soft plastics. The boys on the Berkley DVD's make it look sooooo easy :mad3:

I have always carried sp's with me, had a few flicks and nothing so usually go back to using my tried and trusted hard body jackall chubby's.

Went a purchased a new light flick rod (shimano t-curve) to match up with my twinpower 1000.

Got some new plastics and jig heads. Tried trolling with them and then casting, nothing. Kept on getting a HEAP of wind knots in my useless nitlon pe braid. That crap is coming off!

Decided to head home (5.30pm) and wife was trolling her pumpkinseed minnow and she calls I am on. A few minutes later a nice 45cm flatty is in the boat!

Troll a little bit further and she hooks up on a BIG bream! Got it all the way to the side of the boat and it comes off  (I had left the net at home.............)

Her line also knotted up very badly, so she decided to drive whilst I cast/troll. NOTHING, ZILCH, NADDA.

I have NEVER had any success with soft plastics, except catching weed :1badmood:

The minnamurra river looked very promising though, except you have to watch out for all the people swimming!

    Rob

keep trying, the more you cast, the more you will catch .... i reckon i average about 1 fish for every 200 casts so far

  9. must be a few big ones around up on the mid north coast...

was snorkelling along a weedy drop off in nambucca yesterday and saw 2 huge crocs resting within about 20 metres of each other. One dead set scared me it was so big. I would say at least 1.2m with about a 30cm span across it's head! the other would have been about 90-100cm and had a about a 30-40cm buddy hanging round it. also saw a fair few others hiding on the edge of the drop off around 40-50cm.

this was at the inlet behind the "v-wall" where lots of kids and families swim in the river.

I didn't have time to get the rod out and have a flick, but i had a handline handy, the plan was to snorkel out and dangle a SP in front of them to see if they'd take it, then swim in to shore (only 10m away) and wind it in. But i got tangled and scared them off splashing around so no success! haha. I was more interested in actually seeing how they swallow the lure than anything anyway. oh well.

  10. Nice bow gang, was it a pink tassie that did the trick??

    Well done.

    Cheers

    Roffo

PS, Many snakes about ?? A mate of mine was there 2 weeks ago and he saw 4 in 2 days..

nah it was a yellow "little devil" 7gram.

didn;t see any snakes, but there is always heaps around down there this time of year!

  11. i have a 50 litre "aussie ice box" brand esky and the ice lasts in there for about 3-4 days with the plug in and closer to a week with the plug out, thats just with regular cubes.

using salt water to make your ice blocks would help if you have an average esky.

  12. Went out in the afternoon after a large storm had passed through the area.

put the boat in at the snowline boat ramp and started trolling 2 lines - one flat line and one on the downrigger, both with tassie devils. trolled past lion island and the first couple of bays without any strikes so decided to hit the other end of the lake.

once we arrived up at the other end we threw the same setup out and began trolling again. went about 200m before the flat line hooked up a 44cm rainbow trout pretty much straight in front of the ranger's hut. Seeing as the missus' rod was the one that got smashed she got to wind it in! i was surprised how hard the rainbow smashed the lure and leapt out of the water, but then it didn't put up too much of a fight thought untill it saw the boat.

once it was landed and happy snaps taken we went back to trolling, however the wind came up strong again so we decided to head back and get some ingredients to cook the trout before the shops closed.

wrapped it in foil with garlic, butter, dill and pepper and threw it on the coals in the wood fired pizza oven and it tasted absolutely fantastic.

  13. Hi,

I want to pick up a set of spare bearings for my trailer. It is a brooker trailer that carries a 4.5m brooker open boat. Does anyone know whether they would use ford or holden bearings.

The axle is approx 50mm round.

    cheers.

  14. Hi,

Was out on the hacking on sunday arvo with no luck at all. There was a lot of boat traffic due to the carols on the water being on at the same time.

Just wondering in everyones opinion if high boat traffic scares the fish off the bite? If it is the case, would i be right to say that the going could be pretty slow in well known spots over the next couple of weeks?

    Cheers

  15. Would these areas be likely places/structure to target bream and flatties on SPs/HBs? I've caught bream, flatties and whiting here on bait but no luck with SPs, the substrate is mainly sand and more towards the mangroves mud. The water around this location is under 1 metre

    post-6576-1229658932_thumb.jpg

    Under this mangrove is sand

    post-6576-1229659030_thumb.jpg

This mangrove is in mud and with a fair bit of rocks around with oysters growing on them.

    post-6576-1229659069_thumb.jpg

This is towards the right/further out of the picture above, likewise, mud.

    post-6576-1229659137_thumb.jpg

A concrete jetty, both sides sand, this is where iget most of my whiting, up close and out further, the jetty is visible in the first photo.

So, are these areas likely places to target bream/flatties on SPs/HBs, around the jetty always holds small prawns and also small fish. To the left of the jetty always holds mullets jumping around

    Thanks, Ray.

i would say they look perfect for flatties, but I am pretty new to this

  16. would like to try something new and troll up some tailor on the port hacking on the weekend as i've heard it can be pretty productive! I have never done this before and have a few q's.

    1) What kinds of lures should i try? I have heard they'll eat anything, but what's best?

    2) What speed should i be trolling at?

    3) what line strength/ tackle setups work?

    4) How far out the back of the boat should i have the lures?

    5) any good spots around porth hacking/bate bay?

    Cheers!
