  1. Our last trip out of Port Stephens was Sunday 9th Jan and we were greeted by a raging current, 27 degree water and no bait

Fished out the front in 32 50, then down to the carpark without turning a reel...

Wondering if anyone has an update re the fishing / current and bait out of Port Stephens at present

Planning on fishing this Sunday, Monday and possibly Tuesday

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

  2. G'day mate, we fished the gibber on Thursday and Friday, released a 40kg black on Thursday and a 20kg black on Friday. Water was green but warm around 23deg. I heard reports of fish just out the from but I think the water might have changed since then

  3. Thanks for the update matyg, think the tuna fishing is on the improve.

I'm only fishing a 14ft tinny this trip so just inshore. Headed out today, pretty quiet with only a few Baracouta

Might give it another run tomorrow afternoon. Weather is awesone so even a slow tripm is still worth the effort

Heard of some squid recently but maybe still a bit too much fresh after the rain

  4. Heading down the coast over the easter break and fishing out of a tinny with no electronics

Wondering if anyone has used one of the GPS apps on an iPhone and how it has worked for them

Also how does the GPS work in areas of limited phone reception?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

  5. HI Mate,

Yeh I fish offshore at night around long reef and fair bit. Very dangerous though if you dont know the terrain and unproductive if you dont have good locations / GPS marks for certain species.

Fishing for Jewfish and Teraglin at night is very productive (in certain areas of the reef) and snapper too, however, early morning or late arvos for me are the best for big snapper.

Teraglin usually don't bite during the day at all, so night fishing for them is often imperitive (however, I have hooked them in the day on the odd occasion).

I you want to night fish, make sure you have fished the area in the day many times before and use your GPS MAPPING SYSTEM to map a safe route (if you have a GPS).

    Most of all, take care.

    Hi Butch

Well done on the trag mate

We catch plenty up off port stephens at the big gibber but have not fished for them off Sydney before

What depth of water are you catching them in and what water temp?

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated

  6. Hi Black Magic

I see you live at Shellharbour

There is a very active game fishing club down there - the Shellharbour Game Fishing Club

I have met a few of the guys and they are a great bunch of blokes

They would certainly point you in the right direction

  7. Thanks for the update Kingie Slayer, here's hoping...

Shame u are selling the boat Sand Groper, I too have been waiting the last couple of years for a tuna season out off Sydney

I fish a 7.2m Broadbill out of Sydney, and apart from some gemfish and blue eye have had limited success off Sydney

Fish a lot in a 6.5m Broadbill "Out Wide" which a mate and I own up at Port Stephens

Heaps of Marlin in the summer and no shortage of good Snapper and Kings in the winter, but not the best spot for tuna

Might catch up with you at Bermi this year Kingie Slayer
