Another Knot to try if you can look it up is the Commercial Knot. Basically its 4 loops over the thumb and back through the loops. The Commercial guys use it for their hooks on the long lines. Its quick, simple and strong

It all depends how much you wanna spend. I use a Ian Miller Tournament Stoker with the Bent butt and its awesome. Whatever you decide i'd recommend the Aftco removalable butt. General manufactured rods have a tendency to have the seat go once they get very wet etc.

Most custom built rods will do the job. If you can get the big seat rollers as well thats a bonus!!!
