  1. Hi all,

I've had the use of a mates boat since christmas and finally on friday got our first Marlin,

(black i think although picture looks more like a stripe)about 80kgs.

This was the third strike we have had from a marlin, first was a few weeks ago busted off after about 20 seconds on 15kg, second didn't hook up a few weeks later. And have since learnt about speeding up to help set the hook so this time i gunned it and we were on.

Was out fishing with a young fella who i only met that morning and we had a BALL!!!!

Took us a bit over 2 hours to finally hold on to it and get the hooks out (yes hooks as it already had one in it).

We had a few troubles tracing it in as we have never done it before and it took about 5 attempts. each time the fish got spooked and took off so we had to drop it.

Was the best day fishing of my life!!!

Only things bad were i forgot a glove tried to grab it and it ripped my had up a bit so had to use a jumper. Then when we were about to let him go we both got a blue bottle all over our hands!!!!!! OUCH

Still a GREAT Day. We had another hit also but didn't hook up. just did one jump and that was it.

Great catch and improvisation with the jumper. What lure did the damage, was it shot gun, short corner, long coner, etc.

  2. Thanks for that, i will make sure i do cheers, hopefully il have a report to post on monday.

Today was a great day fishing boated 10 stripeys and 1 salmon dropped at least 8 from spitting the hook and trying to lift them over the side of the boat.

I did try to log in with the coast guard but they never responded to me and also quite a few other guys were trying to log in and no one was returning there calls. Is this usual occourance as its the first time we have fished out wide and had to register our plan for the day.

  3. Quick report, better than last attempt two weeks ago

Hit the bay around 6 am caught enough yakkas in about 20 min, started using one of those yabsaki jigs, i was getting three hook ups every drop. Great tackle!

Downrigged molinex point, drums and around the oil wharf, plenty on sounder but no takers. Decided to anchor up near rhe drums and have a go at a few tailor busting up the surface> Got a few on light ger which was fun. Put out the only squid we had that i had caught earlier in the week and in abouy 3 min zzzzzzzzzzzz :yahoo: finally i thought broke the drought. So excited didnt even bother winding in my soft plastic just put it in the rod holder and grabbed the rod going off. My mate comes over to the side of the boat to net the KINGIE!!!!! and then the rod in the holder buckles over so he grabs that and we are on to a double hook up. That leaves me to struggle wit the net and the rod and net his kingie for him so he can return the favour. Boated both kingies and high fives all around. One measured 52cm and the other 61cm both back in the drink and smiles all around while we are baiting up the yakkas and getting them over the edge to get smashed but nothing. Wish i had more squid this week every day im going for squid then back to the bay on the weekend. Out of the water at 11am and conditions were great the whole morning.

  4. If you don't mind me asking guys, where are you guys catching the live yakkas from in the bay ?

I didnt know where to get them from but today i saw some boats next to molineux point in a little all cove area against the break wall. There are two tug boats anchored up about 50 m away. I went there and started throwing chook pellets in the water and in 5 min they were there. But it was hard to get small ones most were large and putting up a good fight o handlines :biggrin2: .

Hope this helps and gets you that king.

  5. Went out this morning wit three other mates in search for some surface activity early and anchoring up for some kingies later in the day. This seemed a sure bet from all the posts over the last week about the red hot activity in the bay!

On the water at 6 looking everywhere for birds and anything on the sounder, this lasted till about 9am and with no one wetting a line yet. It is getting a little frustrating. so we decide to anchor up at mollinex point with a few other boats and try our luck with the kings. For bait we had frozen gars, live yakkas, soft plastics and some chrome lures. The rest of the day looked promising with an early hook up on bonito :1fishing1: . How we were wrong :ranting2:

The next 2 hours was spent flicking plastics, un weighted and weighted yakkas and gars and the occasional spinning. Still zip, then a good run to what we thought was a kingy but at the surface we sen it was a salmon going 68cm. This got the mood on the boat again and everyone was keen to get a line in. The next two hours we had another two hook ups but both dropped at the boat one kingy and one salmon. That was enough for me and we alled in quits at about 130pm.

Im no expert in the bay more of a harbour fisherman, did anyone have luck out there today i saw a yellow twin hull boat clean up on kingys but couldnt see the bait they were using. I think im going to stick to the harbour just for now :biggrin2:

  6. Pretty quiet at the moment. Sand flats are holding flatties and they seem to like pillies and nippers. Bream are a little quiet and timid and are hanging around structure. Some school jew around and have come on at low tide change and disappeared quick. Only a small window. Some Yakkas are coming back in so I am sure they will follow. I would probably fish the spit bridge, Grotto point or shark Island (east side) with fillets of yakkas or butterflied yakkas for the jew with your drag loose and the rod in the holder for the jew and wait for one to pick it up and run and tighten the drag and strike.

Burleying the bottom with a bomb while anchored helps also as it will attract bream etc for you to catch while you wait for the jew (or not!) to turn up. This I find creates attention, brings in baitfish and the rest speaks for itself. Catch the yakkas before sunset and it will give you the best chance with fresh gun bait as they have been liking them over the dead squid but not the live and the yakkas are easier to catch. Also if you catch a small tailor get ready as they always seem to be caught just before I catch a jew. Caught a few now but not any of real substantial size but the few I have caught have all been in the same circumstances and around 65 to 70cm. Might get a few Port Jacksons as well for fun.

    Good luck Andrew.

Andrew cheers for the advice, ill be sure to let you know how it goes. I will try for squid and yakkas got a spot that is usually promising and have never fished the spit, ill give it a go. Im usually at sow pigs, north head, shark island.

    cheers

  11. hey mate i went to phuket last year and picked a charter that went trolling all day the brochure had a picture of a sailfish on it, i thought sweet im going to catch a sail fish. i was wrong. spent the whole day trolling only to catch small shit tuna, and the charter boat operators dont speak any english so u cant tell them to do something else, if i had my chance again i would've picked reef fishing instead

the picture gets us every time, :1prop:

thats the kinda stuff ive been hearing , thanks for confirming for me.

    was it expensive?

  12. hi fellow raiders,

heading to thailand, koh samoui in april of next year. i want to get on a charter but have heard mixed reports on the net. some say live baiting is the only way but then they got on boats and skipper has promised live bait and tanks are empty, others say only trolling lure is gonna bring up something. its hard to get any valuable info on the net so was hoping someone has been and could recomend me the boat

 am i wasteing my time looking for decent fish over there

    any help is appreciated :1welcomeani:

  13. hi raiders,

thought i might pop the cherry and put up my first post.

went out the saturday before chasing kings in the harbour, day started perfect with 3 squid caught early in morning and 5 yakkas. so we were off to our usuall. tryed for an hour no hits :mad3: we had noticed that there were hardly any boats around so we decided to go see were everyone was. went in direction of north head and there they all were, along with the birds :1welcomeani:

quickly motored out there while the boys were biting off setups and tying up the 30gm. we got there they started casting and i had to watch nervously as i was trying ti tie my 10g on.

finnally i was ready and first cast was onto a heaalthy salmon. this thing had some character egos and was jumping out of the water all over the place trying to shake the lure after about 10 min got it close to the boat, it hard one more jump in it which caused the lure to come flying out and with the tension it landed on the other side of the boat. this had to have hapopened at least 5 time then the salmon were gone :mad3:

    31/10

this time made sure that we werent going to lose theese salmon went and brought a handfull of lures and opted for the single hook rather then the trebble. hit the water and straight to the heads for salmon. got there and nothing  waited and waited driving outside to manly and back, no activity.

    so hung around north head,

took a different approach and tryed one from my collection of soft plastics which till now have brought me no success. so once again ii had brought a new type like i do every couple of weeks and tryed to get the better of this soft plastic fishing and today i was in luck. :1prop: it worked i hooked into some good trevally about 40 cm mark and finally i had overcome my nemisis now i can finally put to use the 15 different packts of gulp i have been collecting.

sorry no photos as i wasted memory on filming about 20 dolphins that were swimming past us. not a bad day after all.

sorry for the long report i just had so much to get out. next time short sweet and photos.

    great site

    cheers
