  1. Hi all,

Just curious as to any reports about the FADs close to sydney harbour this past week? Anybody had any good sessions or heard of any reports re FADs or long or similar? Was going to go take a look tomorrow at some of the close by offshore spots..

  2. Sweet, thanks mate. Yep, catching a salmon trolling off the joey was the fish that got me hard into fishing 10 years ago.

Didn't measure anything, but they were good size, some maybe over 80 and nothing would've been shy of 65

  3. Hey guys,

Had a great little sess monday on the run out off a rock platform far north northern beaches. Nothing too flash as eating goes (or so they say), but the Salmon were on for hours, and really nice size too. Had so much fun getting hit after hit, with heaps of double hook-ups with nobody else around :)

Absolutely perfect day and a great spot with a challenging little reef to work the fish around and then get up onto the platform with pretty light gear.

I was using bonito strips for bait, however my question is, with the season/salmon around at the moment, has anyone had much luck catching them on their own flesh? I kept one for bait, salted it, and was keen to have another crack. I know salmon is meant to be good for big fish, but has anyone had much luck catching more salmon with it? ...I've never really tried too hard to catch species on their own bait.. but I'm thinking it probably shouldn't make much of a difference.. Can anyone tell me otherwise?

    Cheers guys, happy fishing

  4. Thanks snapper! Yeh, that's how I normally do it but not even that was working! Floated the surface unweighted and tried a little deeper.. the only thing interested were the %^#&*@*(@ birds! Pays to be persistent I think we just ran out of time. Always good to be on the water though

  5. Hi all,

Haven't posted for a long time.. took a run to the broken bay FAD this morning at first light.. plenty of fish out there but none interested! 21deg and a nice current today.. managed… nothing! Unfortunately the southerly was up at sunrise.. One other boat turned up and they had no luck either. Tried pillies, squid and trolled a few different things. weird. Where's the temp change start atm?

Not too smooth out there so we didn't hang around for long.. maybe the bite came on later this morning. Would have had a jig or tried some lives, but the gf was getting crook. Caught two stripe tuna on the way back and a nice kingy inside. Very slow day overall.

Hope everyone has some more luck,

    Nic

  6. I got a new shimano symetre 3000 from the states for about $125 delivered, so if your parents are going there you may be able to get it even cheaper. IMO great value for money reels, I have the old and new and they both do a good job.

I double that! Symetre's are awesome for the $. Even at a good online store here you'll get one for only a smidge above your budget

  7. lol i was kinda freaking out the other day when i seen so many small boats around the 3k mark off shore my boat handled it fine out there thus why i wanna try out the FAD near botany :) i wouldnt mind trying my luck on some Mahi Mahi

She'll be sweet buddy. I think some ppl get abit weird with thinking you need huge heavy boats to go anywhere. As long as you pick your days and know the weather and do it smartly your 5.35 will be fine. I've got the same boat with a 75 honda. The only prob with that set-up is it's a little underpowered coming back against a swell but it handles well maybe just get the weight up front. Unless there's a storm offshore, water conditions tend to get better as you move outside. happy fad'ing

  8. Slinky!!! You legend! Thanks mate I really appreciate the effort you went to, seriosuly thanks!

I'll check it out tomorrow night just wanted to get an idea of what I was looking for before I tore her down, havn't fiddled alot with overheads. I didn't have the time the other day but a mate assured me it was actually the other side I should've been looking at - this approach didn't help haha.

I feel like I should buy you some beers or something!

    Thanks again. Framedtrash too.

  9. Hi guys,

the other day the clicker on my charter special 2000 started playing up. it more or less dissappears so I can't hear the drag running. It's making no noise at all when the drag runs or I pull line out, and occasionally starts to sound after after a few winds with the clicker on when I'm pulling a bait in. I took it apart v. v. briefly and the mechanism that makes the click seemed fine.

Has anyone had this happen or have any ideas? Sure it's an easy fix (I hope!)

It's a well maintained reel, hasn't been used alot.

Any help would be much appreciated.

  10. Andrew, Fished out of Broken Bay last Sunday, water was 22.6 degress around the 50-70 FA line any shallower or deeper it dropped to around 21.3. Marked plenty of bait but fishing was slow. I worked the traps up off terrigal and saw a few 2-3kg dollies lurking around but by the time I was there they weren't to interested in eating (2pm). By the looks of the sea surface charts water is coming in and down the coast at a good rate, I'd be going for sure.

    Good luck

    Andyh

Like viking said though there's some seriously good looking water atm too.. not too wide either. Let us know how it goes buddy and good luck. Def worth a shot just be early

  11. Good stuff.

Its funny how the best fishing is often when the conditions are crap.

Just wondering what depth you were fishing your livies on the drift?

Do you have them near the bottom or up mid water?

    cheers

Mainly mid-water mate. But we sounded the fish so It didn't make alot of difference.. but in saying that, def not the bottom

  12. Hey guys,

Planned to get onto some reds at longy early yesterday with a mate. Put in at sandy at 5am, got plenty of little yakkas at west head and started heading round the joey. Wind was blowing strong strong.. still.. bureau buggered this one up! (It was howling all night but all reports until midnight were pointing to calm waters, 5 knots se). Slowly headed round towards newport reef - there was no way we were getting to longy, wind and wind swell was shite! and there was a front approaching! wtf. Anyway, we sounded fish up and decided to drift sth from the southern side of the reef. After the 1st drift the wind was seriously howling! But we got SMASHED by kingies, losing two big boys and boating a legal. Threw him back and did it again. Got a sp and braid stuck around the prop about 20mts from the reef with a heavy stherly blowing us straight onto it. Quick freak out! managing to avoid jumping in, cut it off and got wide.. just!

We did about a half dozen drifts using live yakkas and flicking sp's. Every yakka (about a dozen) was smashed within about an hour with half of them being belted on the way down!! The kingies were on! We got plenty of followers on the sp's by schooling kings and managed some good fish on all sorts of sp's. No snapper unfortuently, but my mate got the biggest bonnie we've ever seen right at the boat on a sp. It coulda been a regular stripey! Will try post some pics later as I don't have the camera.

All in all we got over a dozen fish losing some big boys! So, there's some def big fellas out there if you can find them. Threw them all back to fight another day - I rarely keep anything. Best session i've had for a while!

  13. Hi,

Was wondering if anyones used or owns the starlo stix duo jig stick and could make comment??

Thinking of grabbing one for christmas.

I was going to use it around broken bay mainly for kings.

Also, has anyone used a daiwa opus bull for jigging?? Should go alright??

    Happy fishing

  14. The following table attempts to summarize the barometric pressure, and observations on fish activity and fishing techniques.

    Pressure Trend

    Typical Weather

    Fish Behaviour

    Suggested Fishing Tactics

    High

    Clear skies

Fish seek cover, look for logs, weeds in shallows. If water too warm, will stop biting.

Fish structure close to surface, with shallow crankbaits, poppers, etc..

    Rising

    Clearing or improving

Fish start to move out of deeper water. After a day or so, go to normal feeding.

Fish with brighter lures and near cover, moving from deeper water to shallower water.

    Normal and stable

    Fair

    Normal activity.

Experiment with your favorite baits and lures.

    Falling

    Degrading

    Most active feeding.

Range of different methods. Surface and shallow running lures may work well.

    Slightly lower

    Usually cloudy

Fish seek deeper water, with water temp maybe also slowing them down. May need to settle before feeding again.

Use deep running lures at a moderate speed.

    Low

    Rainy and stormy

Fish move to deeper structures, may not feed.

Fish deep structures, vary your methods.

Of course, the longer a period of high feeding activity, the more likely the fish are to stop feeding. And the longer the period of inactivity, the more likely the fish are to start feeding.

Draw your own conclusions on the effect of a changing barometric pressure on fishing activity. Whether pressure changes by themselves cause feeding changes may be in question, but the patterns seem to be there irregardless.

the table didn't copy but you can get the ghist of what he was saying. Works for me.

    Cheers for the table buddy.

Can anyone direct me to a good webpage they use for pressure readings and changes??

  15. More then likey the case..

It happened to my little yammy last week !

Just do what you said just pull out the hose in the motor and blow air out of it it should do the trick :)

Even easier - The smallest part in the line is usually at the outlet where the water jets out.. Crap gets stuck here. Poke it with a rivet or a nail.. something fine that fits. I've done this plenty of times on yam and honda 4s always works.

  16. yeah was great fun

this was yesturday and yeh was closer to the headland

below is a snapshot of some of the footage of my first jigged kingie caught on my new setup

using shimano saragosa 18000 and shimano jigwrex s605 rod great setup these little kings are no match at all for it but i rather fish big incase the big ones jump on

mate is also hooked onto a nice little king on my spinfisher combo using a white shimano lucanus jig

im going to setup my camera better so tomorrow ill try get some more footage

all fish are around the 60cm mark

    46687735.jpg

Great stuff mate. If you don't mind me asking do you mean closer to barrenjoey headland? How much water were you jigging in? Actually never jigged before but your post just got me keen to buy a few

  17. If you end up giving sp's a go, definitely put a stinger hook on the end as they always smash the tail end.

I swear evertime I troll a gold 'bomber' a tailor smashes it!

Like everyone said they take pretty much anything and everything... But my gold bombers is an absolute tailor whore!! (I think it's a bomber-a). This one lure has been in circulation for ages now they last really well - I actually think it's a little more solid than the x-raps, and a little cheaper.

  18. yeh i would also say it is a while off yet

fads up north have been deployed for a couple of weeks now and are still clean of any groth

we have had bugger all dollies inside the shelf up this way too most are still either just on or out from the shelf but what are being found are all 10kg+ with the best i have heard of going 23.5kg

just be careful if trolling out over the shelf if running light for dollies as there are a number of BIG blues out there too

Yeh that's what I thought. Have heard about the blues too, but was unaware of the big dollies thats great. The last 2 times i've been to browns and around i've come back with nothing so I'm really looking forward to some quick runs to the fads. Cheers fellas happy fishing

  19. Hey all,

Just wondering how long it usually takes for the action to start once they re-deploy the fads?

Mate of mine went to BB wide and terrigal last w/e at sun up and it was dead. I noticed the wk leading up to that the fisheries website had no mention of either being deployed yet so I'm assuming they'd only been there a matter of days/maybe a week.

Either way, considering waters good, how longs it normally take?

    Regards,

    Nic
