mrmoshe
Lucky escape By MARK NOLAN March 27, 2006 A MAN'S first rock-fishing trip almost turned to tragedy yesterday when he was washed off the rocks at a notorious spot. Lvbomin Skorio, 56, of Chain Valley Bay, was trying fishing from the ocean rocks for the first time at Snapper Point within Munmorah State Conservation Area on the Central Coast. Mr Skorio was washed from the sloping rock platform about 9.30am. The swell had increased overnight, bringing waves of around 2m. A nearby fisherman was able to throw him a flotation ring which kept him afloat until help arrived. Attempts by bystanders to help him were thwarted because he did not speak English. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter winched him to a nearby carpark where ambulance crews were waiting. Lake Munmorah resident John Gunther, who photographed the dramatic rescue, said Mr Skorio was lucky to escape injury. "There seemed to be no injuries to him at all other than he was shaken up," Mr Gunther told The Daily Telegraph. "He seemed to be quite impressed because it was his first helicopter ride." A Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesman said he was very, very lucky not to have been killed. "We are usually pulling out a body when we are called down there," he said. The area is notorious for rock-fishing deaths and several life-saving rings have been put in place.

mrmoshe
one lucky bugger Isn't it great that those life rings installed recently are proving to be worth their weight in gold. Let's hope the vandals don't nick 'em to the detriment of someone's life. Pete. Edited March 27, 2006 by MallacootaPete

sparrow
I HAPPENED TO BE THERE ON SUNDAY WHEN THIS GUY WENT IN AND THE SEA WOULD HAVE BEEN PUSHING 3 METRES AT LEAST ON SOME OF THE BIGGER ONES THAT CAME THROUGH. THERE IS NO WAY THIS GUY SHOULD HAVE BEEN WHERE HE WAS. HE WAS TOLD A FEW TIMES NOT TO GO DOWN TO THE LOWER LEDGES BUT AS HE DID NOT UNDERSTAND ENGLISH WELL YOU SEE THE END RESULT. I SPOKE TO THE RANGERS ABOUT THE ANGEL RINGS AND IT TURNS OUT THIS GUY WAS VERY LUCKY AS THEY ONLY REPLACED THE RING ON SATURDAY AFTER SOMEONE HAD STOLEN THE OTHER ONE. ( THESE PEOPLE WHO STEAL OR DAMAGE THESE THINGS NEED TO BE STOPPED)
