Sydney Harbour Tues 28/3

Hi all. First time on the blocks so to speak. Went out yesterday but couldn't get out past the heads- dead set there was almost surf coming thru - swell about 3 -4 mtrs. Bugger that I says to myself , manly bay it is for the drift. Lots of u/size snapper - no flatties and a couple of Ray Sharks, little puppies they are. getting bored motored over to Dobroyd for a drift past the cardinals - 3 rods set of varying sizes and rigs. Just in the throws of rebaiting the small rod and off goes the graphite!! Bloody thing peeled off about 150 mtrs of braid before I got it out of the rod holder - went like an F111 on afterburner!! Definately not a noah, more likely a cranky hoodlum. Managed to turn him about 5 or 6 times before he really got the sh**s and busted my leader. Whatever it was it was very fast. Have never encountered that sort of speed before and I have caught quite a few kingies mostly rats and the very odd bandit. Any thoughts on whatever else it could be?

Are there still Sambos or Amberjacks in the harbour?? Ended the day with bugger all but there was the excitement of that hook up. Makes the outing worthwhile.

Swell coming back in toward Balmoral in the arvo was dead set scary and running in at about 20 knots - I was planing just to stay on the back of the swell. That's it for now. Any ideas on what I might have hooked would be welcome.

Sounds like it could have been one of the big cobia that have moved into the area mate. It would have an amazing experience just hooking one. At least you caught some fish and got out onto the water and thats what its all about. Oh and :1welcomeani: to the site I look forward to reading your reports.

Tuffy you maniac - who tries to go out to sea when there's an 8 metre swell running!!?!! :1yikes:

You're a legend for even considering it.

Certainly sounds like you hooked into a big pelagic and not a shark, and I agree with Sharky that it was prob a Kingy or Cobia. The Samsons and Amberjacks don't seem to be that big from the reports I'm reading.

Anyhow welcome to the site and keep up the good work.

i would put my money on some sort of tuna or mackeral, i have caught mack tuna around little manly before and the bigger ones go like a machine zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz etc etc... and it may have just been a weak knot, kinked leader or the fish may have just got lucky and ran into something.

Good point, Chris. I didn't think of that. With the great speed that tuna/mackeral can produce, that's definitely a feasible option.

Flattieman.

yeah well, the real truth is that I resigned my job last week and start the new one next Monday, so I thought maybe a sickie was in order. Everybody I spoke to agreed - you know, the wife, the mates etc !!
