garyd
Took my little Stacer sports fisher out with a mate this morning in Brisbane waters to chase some flathead. Been fishing for about an hour with a couple of reasonable fish landed (2 Flathead one 52cms and the other 56cm) when my mates rod buckled over and that wonderful sound of the line peeling off the reel filled the air. After about 10 Mins fighting i was convinced that he had hooked a large ray, so i wasn't in any big hurry to grab the net. When he got it closer to the boat so i could see color i could see what appeared to be a smallish ray in the depths but as it got closer to the surface i realised it was the mother of all flat head. I know this sounds just like all those other fishing stories, but i had to tell it because it was the biggest lizard i have ever laid eyes on. I caught on 87cm last summer and it was dwaffed by this monster. Anyway the story hasn't got such a happy ending, as i put the net in the water the big girl just spat the hook out , hovered on the surface for a second just to taunt us and disappeared into the deep

Well done on the 87cm one, but it sounds like a terrible shame that your mate lost that monster. Brisbane Waters certainly does hold 'em - I often fish up the Coast. Flattieman. Alkor
The great monsters are at times just below your feet. Three or four years ago I took my wife and her friend to Narrabeen Beach by the Pines and lend her one of my rods. Just one of these 6ft beginner combos and baited it with a piece of pilchard. My wife's friend had never done any fishing, so her first cast went straight to the sky and then plunged into the gutter just meters into the surf. I did not pay much attention as I watched my own rod. Some minutes later she had a thight line and called for help. I took over and to my amazement I beached a nice lizard. I have to search my photo library for the proof. I know, I took some shots of that beast. Cheers, Peter
